guess i'm not playing tonight anyway, 3.5 GB to download...

And tonight @5pm pacific/8pm eastern is when the next maintenance starts...

So far I'd say ele resist materia are useless, or rather, unnecessary. Maybe we'll eventually see primal fights where it's important to mitigate mass elemental damage, kind of like Mother Shahraz?

This kinda bothers me though. They redesigned and streamlined the materia system from 1.0 to 2.0, so why keep elemental resists in if they are practically worthless??? Don't answer that.

If they have any use at all though, my guess is they'll be used to tweak gear for certain hard fights that you'll swap in for protection from 1 boss move. Or maybe they affect some sort of elemental affinity in crafting/gathering.

for the lvl 20 quests when you have to meld a materia onto something.

So, I log on yesterday, and run out to costa del sol, or wherever it was, to farm the fate a few times, and get me some swimming trunks....and thats the first time the game managed to make my pc crawl on the ground and beg for mercy.

I've been sort of halfway expecting it the whole time I've been playing, and been pleasantly surprised this whole time.

But, get 100 people all casting at the same time, in 1 little area, and my rig just cried

On another note, that is quite possibly the easiest in game mmo event I remember taking part of. 3 fates, and you have enough to buy everything you can wear.

So easy I logged on the other 2 characters I don't ever plan to play, and farmed with both of them as well. Heh

So, I finally got around to creating a character last night (around 2AM CST), and it was nice to see servers fairly empty. I think only four were locked down because of too many players, but that might have been because of the time of day.

After playing for a tiny bit, my biggest question? How the heck do you filter all the gold spam!? I'm sitting in Ul'dah, and it's AWFUL. I mean... it's not even worthwhile to attempt to chat in General, because no one will ever see your message. I tried typing something like /ignore [player name], but that just gave me an invalid command error.

As for my character, I'm Darro Domini on Goblin.

what servers is everyone one?

I'm on Goblin at the moment because that's where a friend of mine created his character. He said he has another one from version 1, but I think he couldn't get on the server. So, who knows where I'll end up.

please no.

Having to farm elemental resistance gear (moltencore cough cough) was the dumbest fucking thing. Can you imagine the rage it would contribute to the endgame on top of the already elitist mentality?

Honestly, I think a lot of that depends on how easy (note: I mean simple not quick) the acquisition is. The biggest problem with Vanilla WoW and resists were the complete and utter lack of resist gear at a high level without already doing the raid. I remember farming nature resist gear on my Rogue for AQ40. I had to go through dungeons down to RFC just to get gear with agility and NR on it. That is ridiculous. I also remember doing similar things to get FR gear for Molten Core, and then you end up upgrading it with the crafted gear... that uses mats from Molten Core. Of course, to even get said mats, you need to leave two bosses alive or else the only trash that drops the mats won't respawn.

Since Final Fantasy XIV allows you to level any profession or class that you want, the easiest way might just be to add some sort of elemental resistance gear to those professions. The only negative aspect would be if someone didn't work on their professions, but maybe they could just buy the stuff instead. Who knows; it's just a thought.

Well, as leatherworker there are a handful of ele resist items you can craft. I'm pretty sure theres a set of elemental "boarskin ringbands' or something like that. Also some of the marauder axes blacksmith can make have ele resist on them, like the Thunderstorm or Inferno axes, but yeah seems too few and far between to have any meaning presently.

All in due time I'm guessing.

You can add them to your blacklist, but there's new ones every day. It wasn't bad a few days ago, but literally every day since it's gotten progressively worse. SE has their special task force on it and has already banned over 500 accounts for RMT. These guys did a great job fighting RMT in FFXI, give them a little while and itll be under control. Best thing you can do is just turn off shouts while in town, and yes, Uldah is so much worse than the rest of the zones.

As for the Elemental Resist stuff, even WoW has 99% done away with it since the Molten Core days. There has been the occasional fight where the *tank* has needed resists since then, and in later expansions that was relegated to a trinket or two with crazy amounts of elemental resistance on it instead of a whole armor set. The elemental resist system in FFXIV is more a relic of poor 1.0 design when the elemental attributes were also thought to affect skill damage of those elements. There might end up being some extreme min/max situations where using elemental resist gear is worth something, but I seriously doubt it. Outside of the base stats and materia there is no Ele resist on any gear, and even stacking a whole set of gear with resist materia gives you a negligible amount of damage reduction compared to say, stacking VIT and just soaking the difference.

Don't have a panic attack, the days of running Mauradon for level 40 boots with 2 agi and 5 NR are behind us

Just about the first thing I did when I logged in to ARR open beta was make a custom chat channel with only LS/FC/PMs and some system messages enabled. They do need a quicker way to handle PM spam though, like a simple right click name > block/report.

I'm on marlboro, I think everyone here posting is scattered all over the place btw. I had 2 legacy characters, on one of the legacy servers. Both were only level 20 though, I decided to abaondon them and start fresh.

As for the gold span, it's quite bad recently. And, some of them spam so fast it just spins by. And, all the gold sellers use those hard names to type out, or use special characters, and it gets even harder. I have found a way to get them all on my ignore list, but even this way is a pain in the ass.

Basically, you can bold the name by dragging the mouse across it with the left button held, and use control c and control v to copy and paste to your blacklist. Of course, since it's scrolling by so fast, even doing that is like playing some mini game from hell.

I have found though, If I open my blacklist, and use my mouse to drag the chat screen up (in this order), the text will actually stay in place (instead of scrolling to the bottom every time a new shout takes place). Then, you get the name bolded, copy it, and then past it to the black list.

Now, note, the bold will cancel itself out alot doing this. I think it happens when a new shout happens (which means, all the time). So, I usually have my left hand hovering the control c keys, and my right hand never lets go of the left button. As soon as I get the whole name bolded, without letting go of the mouse button, control c it quick. Sometimes it can take a few times to get it right.

Note, if you paste the name in the blacklist, and it doesn't give you a message "do you want to blacklist this character", it means it didn't recognize the name. Most likely cause there was an extra blank space after the name (I do that alot).

See? I told you it was a pain in the ass

But, i do get to sit in the city without all the crap spamming fast, so I find it worth it.

edit - it wouldnt get rid of the gold spammers, but adding them to the blackist would be much easier if the chat stayed in place when you scrolled up it, and then "add to blacklist" appeared to the menu when you clicked the name. I hope, at the very least, they do this.

I'm really, really enjoying this, but I'm pretty bummed because I just don't think I have the capacity to keep with this game like I want to; I have so many single player games to play and my game time is already cut drastically. If anyone's still desperately looking for the game and is interested, let me know.

I disabled the effects on other player's actions. I don't really need to see their flashes. It helps dramatically, and I can run at nearly full speed even with 100 other people punching bombs.

I would farm a bit more to buy some sparklers and whatnot for later. In FF11 our guild stored thousands of thems for celebration events.

/blist add "asdfg asdsads"
/blist add <r> will blacklist the last person that sends you a tell. Both have confirmation windows.

After you blist them, report them using the support window -> report cheating. I send in about 10 a day myself.

I'm sure they're working on a solution right now to "fix" the gilsellers but only massive amounts of players reporting "cheaters" will get them to action. Don't be the guy that blacklists the gilsellers and bitch and moan about square not doing anything!

I think the best way for SE is to adopt the wow approach: level 10 or you can't yell and trade. On top of that, add the "report spam" to right click on name which automatically black lists and reports the player; or even launches the report with all the important information already filled out like world, timestamp, location, user name so all you need to do is hit "send" and be on your way.

how do you reply to someone who sent you a tell?

i learned about the blacklist early...those gold spammers are fucking annoying. it's not just a single line, it's like 50 lines at once.

I started a Thaumaturge (was planning on going black mage). I've never really played a mage character up to a high level in MMOs. I'm usually going after hybrid classes. I like the utility they have but they tend to not be great for groups.

Not sure if I'll stick with the Thaum or not.

I started on Gilgamesh server.

Well, I think the one good thing that I noticed is that it seemed to be the same person that kept spamming the whole time, so it wouldn't be hard to keep track of the name.

Is there a limit on the blacklist?

Ah, I didn't even think of making separate chat windows, and I used to do that when I played WoW. Although, I never made one to filter out gold sellers, I did have one for Party/Raid, Private, Combat Log and Guild -- the latter being in a separate window.

Don't have a panic attack, the days of running Mauradon for level 40 boots with 2 agi and 5 NR are behind us

I kind of miss the miss-match clownsuit though!

I'm rather curious how my PC will perform in packed areas. I have pretty much everything jacked up, and the FPS varies wildly from 120+ to about a 60 minimum.

/blist add "asdfg asdsads"
/blist add <r> will blacklist the last person that sends you a tell. Both have confirmation windows.

Sweet... that's the command that I need!

I think I was surprised to see how bad it was getting since Square was probably already used to them from their FFXI days. I do think that taking WoW's approach to it would work out well since gold seller spam was pretty much non-existent back when I quit. Although, would they want to restrict their paying customers? Blizzard only restricted the temporary accounts or users that purchased a digital copy (until the transaction went through).

200 spots on the blacklist, mine's at 37 and filling up quickly. Square needs action on this by the end of the month, and preferably much sooner like by the end of next week.

Turning off combat/other effects helps dramatically in the fates where there are a lot of people. You won't see the full animation and colors, just the initial flashing and you will hear the sound effect.

either ctlr or alt-r will respond to a tell. I think it's alt-r since ctrl-r was the default in FF11 and I remember that not working.

Gridania and Limsa Lomsa usually have 1 or 2 spamming at any given time.

Ul'da (sp?), I remember having to try and block 6 at one time, as scrolled by at the speed of light. And, when I finally got them all blocked, another started up 2 minutes later. I have no idea why they love that city so much /sigh

Might be a remnant of 1.0 tendencies. Ul'dah was the place where people ended up congregating in 1.0 as a result of low server populations and the fact that certain high level leves in the Thanalan region were the superior method of XPing for a good while.

At least from what I can remember, Ul'dah seems to be the starting city for the most classes, and it's the starting city for Gladiator, which is the default choice. I haven't checked to see if most of the spammers are Gladiators though.

how long is maintenance usually?

and when do you get asked to enter your payment info? at the end of 30 days? most mmos require it up front.

damn, i really don't get the point of the fire and ice umbrals. kind of a pain in the ass.

the maintenances have been big ones focused on server stability, so it's about 8 hours (till 3:00am the next day, or 5:00 CST). Today's is another server stability fix on top of other things, so it's long. Don't expect to play until tomorrow at the earliest.

There were little ones here and there that were like 5-10 minutes ea.

Maintenance has so far been some small 5-10 min ones a few times (and even then people who were already on could continue playing, just no one could log in) or the larger one as we had like a week ago and are having currently which last for around 8 hours.

You can enter your payment info at the mogstation whenever you want. If you don't, your account will just be turned off after your free month.

The Fire/Ice umbrals, I'm guessing you are playing a THM? If so, they have a unique mechanic. For having the astral fire/ice up by casting either fire or ice will increase the damage of fire and its mana usage with each consecutive fire spell cast and with ice you regain more mana the more consecutive ice spells you cast in a row. Once you get the spell (can't remember name it is like level 5) that allows you to turn your astral from ice to fire or vice verse you have pretty much unlimited mana from that point on as long as you rotate properly. Cast fire fire fire till you are out of mana, switch the astral, then cast ice a few times till your mana is full and the astral switch spell is castable again then switch back to fire.

THM is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it and having to not have to worry about mana is very nice. I currently have THM up to 27 and been enjoying it. Had to get it to 26 to get swiftcast since that is a spell I can use on my WHM and having swiftcast raise on people that die in a fight is amazing.

Ok, that makes more sense about Thaum. I'll have to try that.

Something else I am a bit disappointed in is almost every spell has a 2.5s cast time. where are the instants spells? Also seems like there aren't that many spells either, so not much variety.

There are some instant spells, but not many. I can't remember when THM gets their first instant. In game if you click on the actions lists it will show you what level you get a new spell under actions and what level you get a new trait under trait (traits enhance you or your spells). You don't get tons of spells from any one class/job in the game but with cross skills that starts to add up a bit more.

Instead of them giving you tons of spells and you only ever cast a handful of them, they decided to give fewer spells but make almost all of them worth using. On my WHM the only spells I don't use really are Cure 3(never once seriously casted this spell yet) and Medica (Medica 2 outclasses it in all ways but I did use Medica a lot till I got M2). Every other spell I have though I use and use a lot which is around a dozen healing/defensive spells and like half a dozen offensive spells. Add a few more in for cross class (namely Swiftcast and Surecast from THM)

Made the mistake of finally getting on and started a crafting session. I hadn't geared up since phase 3, so I started making all of my gear myself (we're talking for all of the DoH jobs; I didn't even start on my DoW/DoM jobs yet...). Before I knew it, it was 3 hours passed my bed time, lol.

I'm so far behind everyone on this game now. That's ok. I plan on enjoying it - as I usually do - and not burn out in a month.

Gladiator 26
Conjurer 15
Marauder 8
Pugilist 5
Lancer 4

Tanking is quite easy in FFXIV so far unless your 2 DPS'ers are aiming at 2 different targets and then it gets to be a pain. 4 story Dungeons + Ifrit cleared, no deaths, no team deaths, full clears, 100% record.

Marauder 8 is pretty easy to reach and gives Bloodbath (25% of damage dealt converted to health, iirc) which I find reasonably useful for Gladiator. Lancer gives Feint which is a solid attack in itself but adds +Slow, also nice for single target tanking or solo work. Of course, Conjurer with Cure, Raise and Protect all have their uses too. I'm loving the whole crossover skills thing, it feels like the old FFXI system but with more variety and tougher choices to make.

Miner 20
Goldsmith 20
Armourer 23

My name is Neil and I am a crafting addict. I am of the firm belief that FFXIV ARR has the hands down best crafting system I have ever seen in an MMO. The quality of materials you use, the equipment you wear/food you use, the item you're trying to craft and heck, even a certain level of player skill is involved in crafting an item. One massive negative is that it's one absolutely huge time sink to level up. Other than that, I'm loving it.

PS: I dislike MMO maintenance when I'm going to play... and we have another 4 hours of it as now

Is this "retainer" the equivalent of a "bank toon"/mule in other games?

It can be used as a bank, storing items but it is also your way to sell on the AH (Market Board).

Off the bat as I perform my own search for a solution, IS there any way to save local character data (skill slots, equipment lists and loadouts) onto Square Enix's servers and transfer them to another computer?

Or is it like 11 back then in moving manually those files?
