It depends:

if you're going to overclock to the max, get the best memory you can afford; that would be Corsair but it's not cheap. TwinMOS is getting known for being good overclocking RAM at a reasonable price but is hard to find. Otherwise you prolly won't go wrong by going with Crucial or Samsung PC2100 for stock operation. However, PC2700 is prolly a few dollars more and it will allow you to moderately overclock.

For now you can get by with the stock Intel cooler but if you bought a tray or OEM CPU, the best out there right now is an Alpha or Swiftech unit and again they cost $$$. I have the Vantec Aerocooler which does a great job considering I got it for $25. Its not as good as the Alpha but its performance is close to it.

For you peeps that can't run at 8x AGP stably with a 9700pro. I found this on the ng. Dunno if it really works but it's worth a shot.

I just talke to Giga-Byte Tech support. He told me to make the adjustments
on the BIOS and I've been running stable on 8X all day!!! Unbelievable.

Steps:
- Go into Bios.
- hit CTRL-F1
- Select Advanced Chipset Features
- Switch DRAM Timing Configure to Manual
- Switch DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay to 2
- Switch DRAM RAS# Percentage to 2
- Hit F10 to Save
- Reboot and run at AGP 8X

Thanks huthut,

I had ago with those settings and it does seem far more stable. My games seem to run ok without crashing to the desktop. I ran 3DMark2003, and hit 4810 with fastwrites enabled.

I then changed the BIOS to top performance, but alas she became unstable again. But its working on AGP 8X ok on normal settings. Got the opportunity to RMA my 9700 Pro for a newer revision, but unsure if its worth doing.

Anyways, thanks for the tip....

Can this board do 200Mhz or greater fsb? In the Anand's review, he says that the extra power supply thing doesn't help in overclocking.

I've tested 4 multiple VID CPUs in this board and they all get to 175MHz at default voltage. Pushing the voltage does nothing. I know these chips can go farther because I experience system reboots which to me are indicative of PSU issues and I'm running an Antec TP 550W. I'm getting in an Enermax 651 so we'll soon see if its a PSU issue. The board may also very well be limited by the BIOS and I'm betting that a new BIOS will be issued when the new 800 MHZ FSB P4s are released.

175 FSB is about all you can expect from the 8INXP. It is probably just an inherent limitation in the board itself.

You can try a different power supply, it is unlikely you will do better.

huh, no more problems with this mobo so nobody wants to comment on anything.... I love it though!!!. I am going to get rid of this CPU HSF though, it sucks. I want to get my load temps below 48, any suggestions? I am also thinking about adding a dual fan setup for my video card to help get temps down. Any recomendations?

I currently use a Vantec Aerocooler for one of my overclocked P4s. At load, I get temps of 43C. Good price for near the performance of a Swifty or an Alpha.

Cool, I'll check that one out too, thanks.

I put SLK900 W/ 92MM fan on it & my temps round 40 idle & 48 load.
Can anybody recommend some good RAM for this board? If $$ is no object!!
Once in a while I get no reboot after clicking restart in WinXP w/F4 bios??
@ the moment, have 3X256 Samsung & 1X256 Spectek running in dual channel
The highest I can get is 140 @ 2-6-2-2 with no porblems, relaxing timing wont help stability.
CPU 1.8 @ 2.5 you think I should go for the C1 2.4???

This mobo is not capable of high FSB operation.

You would be better off with a 2.53, 2.66, or 2.8 and just settle for running in the 150-160 range.

Trust me I have tried to get this board to run stable at more than 160 FSB. It just flat out won't.

And this is with a 2.4b pretested.

Sadly, my best stable FSB is 174MHz....and not 1 MHZ more. Yet that same CPU is stable at 180MHz on my older P4PE board.

I've got on the Granite Bay band wagon and I have a lot of problems with my 9500pro locking up. It was a clean install of windows, and I have even tried my old geforce2 and it works fine. Most of the time the 9500pro works fine but when I do any thing that has 3-D graphics it locks up tighter than a, well you get the picture. I have never put the 9500 pro on the board with out a clean install of windows so that isn't the problem. Does any one have any suggestions or is my card a lemon. I'm running the Giga Byte board, 2.66, 1 GIG giel Ram, 2 WD special HDD (Raid 0), windows xp, and directx 9. Thanks Kevin

Wow, just put the 8inxp on and love it.

Only problem is my PCI cards
I put my SB Audigy in PCI slot 2 ,and Adaptec SCSI card in pci slot 3.
It doesnt like that combo, and I don't think it likes it due to the SCSI card.

Has anyone successfully run both these cards on this board? If so, what slots are you using? Those are the only two pci cards I'm using, because I ditched my NIC card for the onboard lan =)

You need to make sure write combining is toggled off (in display properties, go "advanced", then "troubleshhoot" tab) and that fast writes is off in the SMARTGART section.

try putting your SCSI card out in slot 4 or 5 or at least keep a slot between cards. I believe that IRQ sharing is taking place that neither card likes. consecutive PCI slots tend to share IRQs. Hope that helps.

Ok. I got USB 2.0 card in the pci 5 slot, so I'll try the scsi card in PCI 4, leave pci 1 open so my radeon can breath, and put my SB Audigy in PCI 2.
I'll let you know

Tried that and same thing. Is any one else having problems with a 9500 pro in there board? It locks up when I play Raven Shield, but I loaded Ghost Recon on it tonight and it played. Is it something with the game, card, mobo, or cobo of all three. I do know that the game "supports" the 9500 pro, but I can't understand why it always locks up on me when I try to load it, but the Nvidia doesn't. I would hate to have to buy a leafblower FX. My case already has 7 fans, I think that's enough.

Another question. Is anyone having issues with the reboot with this motherboard? I notice sometimes when I reset it, it will hang up and not come back on. I didn't notice it doning it before I put the RAID together. Just wondering.

Yes it can (without taking the batteries off)!!

You can find a CMOS_Clear in front of the board (beside the IDE1 and IDE2 connector, close to the system fan header). It doesn't have any header but you can clearly see its silk screen. Shorting the first and last pins will clear your Cmos and put it at default settings (FSB =100Mhz).

heres a good tute ( CLICK ) on how to uninstall and reinstall, CORRECTLY, your ati drivers ( 6th post down the page - How to Update your ATI Drivers )

... it helped my probs with my 9700 pro, might help with your 9500... also, i didnt install smartgart this time ( thinking this would be one way to disable fastwrites... ) and have had no probs... even with it OCed a little to 364/337...
