according to my friend, who heard my voice through google talk, the clearity was close to, if not better than the phone conversation.

Just "x" it out and it will go there. You can only close the program if you right click it and select exit.

isn't this just another IM service...you can hear people talk over MSN, Yahoo, and AIM already so what makes this any different?

Yes, it's just another IM. The point for the hype is that it's from Google. This could be cool (eventually) or it could be flop. It's the same reason Gmail got so much hype. People wanted to see what Google could do with webmail. Some liked it better, some didn't.

skype too.. which worked the best IMO.. altho, haven't tried the others in a while. not that it matters.. no one i know has a mic that would bother with that anyway

tried it just to see.. .looks nice. not going to use it.. as all my friends use AIM

I don't think you can. Maybe that's why they have a search feature. Anyway, this is only the first release. We will most likely see this feature later along with customizing your text and avatars later.

In the meantime, you could use GAIM and organize in groups there. Then, when Google adds groups, move back.

the good thing about jabber is that groups (and sub-groups) are stored on the server, independent of the client you use. plus, you can assign more than one group to each contact.

I used Exodus and divided my contacts into groups, logged off, then logged in from Gaim, which showed all my groups. this means Google's server allows groups, but the client won't show them (yet). I'm sure the next update will fix that problem. In the meantime, use trillian/gaim/etc to group your contacts.
