If that 5-day forecasted path holds true, we'll get a lot of rain up here as we'll be on the NE side. We need rain pretty bad up here.

I don't think tornados aren't as trackable as hurricanes are.

AFAIK, they seem to appear and disappear without much warning.

Riiiight.... You're being sarcastic, right?

Although a direct hit is rare, just getting the brunt of the bands sucks enough for a lot of us.

From last year; I had no power for two separate weeks (Charley and Frances) and my '82 Rabbit was RUINED from flooding (from Frances.)

I need to find the video I made last year of me walking through the yard up to the flooded car. You couldn't even see the grass. All you could see is tree limbs, branches, leaves.

I don't want to put up with that again this year. On that same note, I'd hate to say, "I hope it hits the panhandle" or "I hope it hits Texas" or whatever because wishing that kind of potential devestation on someone else is just plain evil. Bad karma. The next one WILL hit you if you talk like that.

What really burns me is how fuct I got and some assclowns down in Miami got new TV's and furniture from FEMA and the hurricane didn't even hit Dade or Broward last year. Where was FEMA when I needed food, water, ice and financial assistance? NOWHERE TO BE FOUND! Assholes. They just need to fix that program or shut it down.

Yep, I'm in the New Orleans area. I've been surfing for hotel rooms most of the morning. The closest I could find vacancy was in Beaumont. It wouldn't be that bad except for having to take my two cats with me.

Dennis is still increasing in strength-the 2 PM EDT advisory now states winds of 110 mph. It will likely weaken slightly as it passes over Cuba, then regain strength in the gulf of Mexico.

Just what the Florida pan handle needs, another direct hit. My wife goes to Destin for work and says the area is still not put back together from the last couple of hurricanes.

Yeah, it's getting ridiculous with mother nature's constant battering of the Gulf Coast.

Seems like Dennis was a recently used hurricane name, no?

Dennis was last used in 1999.
Names get recycled every 6 years, and then retired if the storm was extremely significant(e.g. Andrew, Charley) and a new name is put in the pool. This latest Dennis will probably be retired, at this rate.:Q

2004 - Charley
2004 - Frances
2004 - Ivan
2004 - Jeanne
In a 3 way tie for the most names retired in a single year with '55 and '95 also having 4 retirements

The new names are:

Colin
Fiona
Igor
Julia

Wow, I didn't realize it was considered that bad. I guess it did a lot of damage, I just didn't think about it on the same scale as an Andrew.

Keep in mind there's no official cutoff for when a name should be retired, it's a group decision based on when the World Meteorological Organization thinks that reusing the name would no longer be appropriate.

The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity. If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the WMO committee (called primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it.

ARE YOU NUTS?!?!!

Tell that to the people in Charlotte County. Tell that to the guy who drove off of the washed out section of Lake Wale's Route 60 right before my eyes.. Oh wait.. you can't, he's dead. Did you happen to SEE all of the all of the destruction that thing left behind going all of the way from Port Charlotte to Daytona Beach? Did you just move to Florida this year or did you just stay in Ybor City having a hurricane party?

You can't measure the scale of a storm based on how it compares to Andrew, because Andrew was horrific. It slammed head on into a highly populated area with a lot of trailers, etc. LEVELED it. Also, Andrew came at a time after we hadn't had a major hurricane in a long time. Hurricanes were something that his the Carolinas.

Can you imagine what it would be like if Charley had stayed on course and slammed into Pinellas County? Same hurricane, different path. BIG difference. Sure, it wasn't as strong as Andrew. Charley was a cat 4 and Andrew was a cat 5. But I think 35 deaths is more than enough to justify retiring a name.

The forecast Path and forecasted landfall point almost looks identical as Ivan, which Brought The Pittsburgh area Sh!tloads of rains last September, i ready for winter already.

I don't think it will be exactly like Ivan; this is a curving storm(i.e. hit the US then curve out towards sea, sort of how a compass moves), so predictions tend to overestimate movement to the left and underestimate movement to the right. I would expect this one to hit the rightmost predicted paths and hit closer to the main body of Floria than the panhandle. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if it ended up scraping the west coast of Florida pretty badly.
