I've finally been able to buy an Intel DP965LT
Now I've got some other questions again.
After finally setting up everything, I find that my SATA harddrive has only SATA cable that connects to the motherboard.
Where's the SATA power cable???? Does this board not have a SATA Power Cable? There were 2 sata cables that came with the board but I didn't find any SATA power cable?

Next what's the use of the audio pins?

Hi,

The PSU should have a SATA power cable.

If not you can buy a 4 pin Molex to SATA cable.

these are for a front panel audio controller. It's a 3.5 drivebay gadget that allows u to connect ur audio sources from the front. Intel ships this with its top of the line boards.

Hey all,

This has been a great thread.

My board is running and stable and I am pleased about that, but I am having issues with the sound output. There are scratches and crackly noises coming through the speakers (or headphones), especially when the processor is under some load (ie virus scans, loading programs, etc.) I've reinstalled the most current drivers on the Intel site a number of times, and tried them without the SigmaTel mixer that is installed along with the drivers (doesn't make a difference).

any ideas? similar experiences?

Thanks for the reply pcy, alitayyab
My bro was able to buy Sata Power cable just a while ago.
Now on to installing XP. I have question regarding this.
What flow should I use when installing Windows XP, Intel drivers and SP2
This one
WinXP
Intel drivers
SP2
or this
WinXP
SP2
Intel drivers.
Can you tell me the flow that u did where u encountered less problems?
I encountered a problem when I installed WinXP then Intel drivers it was looking for usbehci.sys but I cannot find it anywhere. And the
drivers I have dl from Intel is located in my thumbdrive. Did u guys also encounter this problem

1. win xp
2. sp2
3. intel drivers

Ahhmmmm. When updating the bios do I have to use the previous release or can I just use the latest one 1176. I'm asking this because when I try updating it to 1176 it fails when flashing the bios.

I tried restoring to default settings in bios but it still fails. Does anyone of you know the solution to this.

it should be possible to upgrade to any version of the bios. If u are failing to flash, maybe u should d/l the bios again and try it out.

also where exactly is the process failing?

look at the sticker that came with the mobo. there's a bios jumper drawn there. switch it to recover.
make a recovery cd (download the recovery bios file from intel's website and burn it to a cd)
put the cd in the drive, reset ur pc. It should flash itself back to life. just to make sure use the 1162 bios recovery.

Will I still be able to recover it coz there's no display on the screen, the fan sorts of powers up and down, same thing happens to the dvd drive.
The recovery cd that u mention, does it only contain the .BIO file for 1162

yes thats the only file it should have.
from intel's own document:
1. copy the recovery bios image (*.bio, *=name of bios) on a blank cd
2. put the cd in the drive
3. remove bios config jumper
4. turn the power on
5. wait 2 - 5 mins
6. computer will shut down or prompt u to do so
7. in case of a bad checksum error press F1->bios->load defaults->save n exit
8. restart

Hello, I'm a new user of this board. Actually this is my first intel based system for a decade.
There are two things I'd like to undertand better, and wondering if someone here could shed some ligth on it

First, I suppose core 2 cpu's support speed step, but my cpu is running at full speed all the time. Does this board support speed step at all? If yes, how can I activate it? I have installed latest chipset drivers.

Some user earlier on this thread mentioned strange ammount of memory being shown on windows System Properties panel. I have exactly same issue. My 1gig reads as 0,98GB. Strange... Do you think this is a problem? Bios says 1024 (2x512).

Thanks for your comments

To use speed step you have to have your power scheme set to minimal power management.

Your pci-e video card is using some of your system memory, that is why windows reports less than 1gig. At least that is my guess. My computer also reports 1.98GB instead of 2GB.

even with hyper threading enabled on the non core 2's you lose 2mb of ram. so i would imagine this is the same case as a HT enabled chip tries to act as a dual thread. don't worry about it.

Example:[Ram] Usage: 462/2046MB (22.58%) <~~~~~~` should be 2048 for 2 gigs.

I'll just update on what's happened to my board.
So the first board I bought had a system blackout after an unsuccessful 1176 BIOS Update. I went to the store where I bought it and had it replace. After they replaced the board I told the tech to run the Express BIOS Utility by Intel so we'll know if the problem was just with the old board.
And guess what it also failed. Now how can I update my BIOS.
Here's the info on the board I have .

Mobo: Intel DP965LTCK
Stock BIOS: MQ96510J.86A.0784.2006.0707.1503

Any help will be appreciated.

Indigo,
Check out section 2.1.1 in the product spec. It explains some of the functions which may be using your "missing" memory.

are you sure you are using the right update for your os? IE: xp pro or xp 64bit. when you express flash it you should get a series of prompts, then you need to back away from the machine "dont touch anything". it should reboot an a screen will pop up stateing each flash process is done. finally it wil come back to the desktop an a window will appear saying flash suscessfull. once i made the mistake of moving my mouse while flashing another board and that alone caused a failure with a black screen.

if all else fails you can call intel support, they will try an charge you, but if you scream an holler enough they tell you that you are entitled to 1 "freecourtsey call" and put you through to a tech. if you do that make sure you keep the support ticket case number because you can resuse that case number later on.

Im using Windows XP Pro. But isn't it stated in intels website that the BIOS update is OS Independent.

When using Xpress Flash, I do get a series of prompts and computer reboots. And I do get to the screen stating each flash process and their result. All processes are successful except for the last one where in it tells that the Utility is starting to Flash the BIOS. It always fails there and displays a technical error number (edited Finally got a good look at it Technical error 0x.... 1278 I think hehe). The computer then reboots again and when I go back to windows and a form pops up indicating that the BIOS Update was unsuccessful.

I also did call Intel (they did'nt mention anything about charging me) and one of their techs called me as we were approaching the parking lot of the store where I bought the MOBO. He was telling me methods on how to do a bios recovery which I already did. The case was closed since I was returning the mobo already. But after seeing the new mobo fail in the update again, I'll be calling Intel again.

There is a method that I'm thinking that might work that is instead of updating directly to 1176 I could try to update gradually 0784 to 0804 then to 0816 then to 1162 and then finally to 1176. (edited: It didn't work )

I'd also like to know if there is somebody here who has experienced this problem. Unsuccessful Bios Update when updating from 0784 to 1176 using INTEL's EXPRESS BIOS Utility

Oh BTW, the tech of the store where I bought the Mobo was telling me not to update the BIOS. What is your comment on this?

Does the CPU affect the bios update 'coz I'm just using an Intel 820 on this board?

i too had to opp for expensive memory also in order for this board to run
at its full speed with stability...

i am using crucial pc-6400 running @800 timings 5-5-5-12 voltage 1.8v
never had no problems as this memory is validated by intel..

anyways, finally download intels utilities...hip hip, however all works fine other than it dosent detect my fan speed.
cpu im using is PD 950 and runs at 35c via zalman 9500 AT...sweet.

I bought this board when the conroes first went on sale. I did not plan to overclock and this board was the right price. I purchased Corsair PC4200 value ram and it runs a full speed and is rock stable.

I recently updated the BIOS and dekstop utilities finally works. Although it appears the temps seem to be reading high. Idle is showing 52C. The fan speed does not crank up and judging by the actual feel of the heatsink, it is no where near 52C. This is the stock fan.

I would definately want to update the bios on the board. The list of fixes is pretty huge. Also older bioses don't allow any hardware monitoring.

The CPU shouldn't matter, but I don't know what to point to as the cause of your problems. I'd try to get the store to update the bios, but not using the same hardware that you've been using.

Here's a pic of what happens in the update
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i41/cptrunks/BiosUpdatePic.jpg

Already called Intel again and for now they can't figure out why it fails on my system.
Hmm... I'm using APC Back-UPS ES 500 you guys think it's contributing to my problem.

BTW, I also get a Yellow Exclamation Mark on Device Manager in System Device for the
Intel(R) Management Engine Interface. Is this normal since my BIOS is not yet updated
