SR how is battlefield measuring up to mw2 ?
I remember promising never to give them another dime after battlefield 1943 wouldnt connect for me to play.
LOL if it makes you feel better, I made the same promise to myself after 12 months of frustration over Battlefield 2 That's the only game disc I've ever actually followed through on threats to 'snap in half'! I did it to protect myself, though.
Both games have their own unique frustrations, and they do different things very, very well. Where one developer fails, the other succeeds magnificently.
Both games have completely screwed the PC crowd: IW through a lack of effort and DICE through a lack of execution.
My biggest gripe with BC2 is the game's lack of responsiveness. There's a delay behind almost every input. It's not nearly as bad as the demo was, but still... Many games, like MW2 (which is Quake-based) and all Unreal Engine games accept input immediately on the client and let the client/server hash out the details "later". This provides a very fluid experience. DICE games' netcode requires the server to "authenticate" almost every action you take. This actually results in less bandwidth usage per player (less error correction, which is why their games can generally support more players) and a more accurate representation on the client of the server's notion of gamestate, but it's not as fluid for the player.
Netcode differences aside, the gun models are a shame up against MW2 and the game runs at 30FPS (guestimating), whereas MW2 runs at 60FPS. 30FPS + Dice netcode = frustration. Also, hit detection seems WAY off at times. Sometimes it seems perfect, other times it all goes sideways. This happens with MW2 from time to time, but it's more gun-specific (the higher the RPM of the gun, the higher the susceptibility). My biggest gripe with MW2 is bullets that follow me around corners. This just didn't happen to me in COD4 and does not happen to me in BC2.
Save for a few anomalies, BC2's balance is a little better, which is really surprising given the added element of vehicles. The game isn't dominated by a small subset of weapons and tactics like MW2. MW2 is plagued with camping and a lot of weapons that have no useful place in the game.
All in all, when both games are running well (which MW2 does far more often than BC2), BC2 is by far the most fun to play. It offers a teamwork angle that just can't be found in a game like MW2. MW2 looks better (unless you're playing on PC, in which case BC2 is a sight to behold), and generally runs better. BC2's interface is clunky and is actually less responsive than in-game actions. IW has UI's down to a science.
I would love to get IW's programmers behind the gameplay endeavors of DICE.
