I already have 2 iPods so I'd gladly take a 4 gig iPhone for a reduced price since I won't be storing much music on it.

A quick check at Newegg shows 32GB SSDs going for a $200 premium over 16GB, so if Apple were to do a 32gb iPod touch now we'd be looking at $599 minimum. It'll be at least a year before we see a 32gb iTouch.

C'mon Taiwan, ramp up production on those SSDs and drive those prices down baby!

I think that getting the Touch to 32GB might take a while... Considering the fact that Dell has teh 32GB SSD drive priced at $500+ as an upgrade and that is a 2.5" drive... in order for Apple to maintain pricing, they would essentially be giving the rest of the player away for free if they priced it at even $599

I will wait to see what people do when it comes to hacking the Touch, it could become a pretty sick little PDA.

The apple touch looks HOT...and the classic is a great rendition on an already great model. I think I might have to pick up a touch once they come in larger sizes. 16 gigs wont do it for me just yet.

Dude, the question on my mind right now is whether current iPhone hacks will work on iPod touch with little/no modification! All of the browser-based apps should work, and if you can "jailbreak" the touch then I imagine the IM clients will work too.

I'm debating between a 160GB Classic and a 16GB Touch right now. While I dig the Touch form factor and wifi, 10x the storage + $50 in the bank is hard to pass up.

To be fair, they're still slightly higher than they were a week ago, but it looks like Wall Street was expecting more?

Totally informal, but by comparing the timestamps from the Gizmodo blog link:
-the stock drops almost $4 right after the new shuffle/Nano are announced
-rebounds when the iPod Touch is announced
-declines while they discuss Starbucks
-tanks again when the $200 price cut on the iPhone is announced

maybe wall street is assuming a cannibalization of iphone sales (and thus profits)? Alienation of loyal customer base?

Or maybe they were expecting an enterprise offering...

I think Wall Street was hoping for a firm announcement of a 3G iPhone for Europe. I think the price cut should've been expected--no way Apple can sell an iPhone with EDGE for $599 when you've got iPod touch in stores. I am a bit surprised at iPod touch pricing though--they could've priced it at $399/$499 and consumers would still snatch them up in droves. I guess Apple's cost per unit might be lower than initially reported though. Must be using lead paint from China!

im exactly with you. while i have over 80GB of music, including my 5 friends total libraries and my parents music, i only listen to around 10GB, so the 16GB is a perfect size for me. im actually coming down from a 5G 30GB ipod, and its always half full with music and the rest are misc files for transferring and such.

i think the touch is a better option, considering its brand new and it has wi-fi, which is a nice deal imo. the ipod classic is pretty much THE hd based player of them all right now, and yes, they are thin (both 80GB and 160GB), but those dont offer much except obvious storage increases. the new ui just looks like a refresh and not a total overhaul like the touch (although even that is stolen/taken from the iphone, but it is totally new).

no way im getting the new nano, because i just got one last week and gave it to my gf. i personally love the old look better.

so bottom line for me is to get the 16GB touch. hopefully they will have quite a few to sell at the apple store on the 28th...cause i want to get one before i go down to my friends college (uofi).

Damn I'm kind of disappointed with the news.

If it was a 80/160 GB iPod Touch I'd be all over it. But now... I don't know. I have around 50 GB of music and want something bigger.

I was hoping for a bigger screen/hard drive for video, but that's not an option for me on the tiny iPod classic screen.

You gotta hand it to Apple... They did the WiFi integration correctly! If you're going to add wireless, let people use it for something useful like surfing the web or downloading music! The only missing feature is sharing your music collection wirelessly over iTunes WiFi with other iPods, but I'm sure that someone will have a hack for that in a few weeks

The ringtone system sucks, though. I've already paid for the music once, and shouldn't have to pay for it again just to make a ringtone. That will probably get cracked as well.
