tsnjamesduthie: Suspension debate aside, size of fines has to change in CBA. If you go $ per mins played, Shea Weber makes $2500 in about one shift.
I agree that $2500 is such a paltry amount of money, even to a player making min. salary ($500,000).

That guy is an idiot. He just compared a flying elbow --> face to what Weber did. You realize the glass has give right? And that when someone is getting checked face first into the glass it would be with more force than what Weber applied right?

I know it looked amazingly fantastic. Wow he just rammed that guy's head into a brick wall!!! No, not really.

20,000 for swearing

2,500 for slamming a guys head into the glass.

Weber should have probably got a game IMO.

Unfortunately the CBA doesn't allow them to fine him any more. I hope they fix that in the next CBA. Max fine should be based on salary.

What a maroon. No way Weber could have ever hoped to do as much damage as Keith did with his hit. I don't think people realize how much impact speed has on the severity of a hit. Rick DiPietro is the only person capable of getting a concussion from what Weber did there.

The NHL has not lost any credibility. People will continue to bitch about this for a day or two, then they'll go back to bitching about how much attention Crosby gets or some crap like that.

I just watched the video again. When watching in real time the hit Weber took actually sounded/seemed worse than what happened after. Hell it looks like he barely hit the guy into the glass to be honest. Gotta watch it in full speed from that corner angle to understand, it's at around the :30 mark. But let's freak out about it because it looks vicious in slow mo.

Weber's act was every bit as bad as Keith's. There was one and only one intent from Weber. To hurt Zetterberg. The fact that he missed on his initial punch/push and did it a second time shows that it wasn't accidental nor was it a reactive action. It was premeditated.
Weber is a goon. Shannahan is a puss for not issuing a suspension. Weber should have been suspended a minimum of 3 games for that circus act. Pure bush league.
Let the headhunting begin because no one can get suspended now.

it was still an intentional hit on the head, and 2500 is only enough to say "look, see this? i dont really give a shit what happened, and i just wanted that to be loud and clear"

it was a shitty move. if youre going to do next to nothing, just do nothing, and if youre going to fine someone, fine them something worth a damn.

Not even close. Zetterberg walked away from the hit and there was no real danger of him getting hurt because of the nature of the mechanics of the incident.

Daniel Sedin on the other hand is still not playing, and even though it is the playoffs, he isn't even skating with the team.

For suspensions, I'd favour a look at a "max of n games or however long the other guy is out" type rule.

2-1 Pheonix after 2.

A wild, entertaining game but I have to say (even though it breaks my heart):

The core of the Hawks is soft; there's no denying it. They want to play olympic hockey while the other team takes run after run at them. I don't know how far that's going to take them.

I've thought that too, but some guys like DiPietro and Havlat could end careers with their lack of conditioning.

Bump into Martin Havlat, 2:00 for interference but a 90 game suspension because he broke his femur and collarbone on the play.

Took them to the cup a couple of years ago. Since Q took over, they never really were a physically dominating team. I can't remember the last time the hawks outhit a team in the regular season, let alone the playoffs. The hits don't effect them as much as it might others. Seems like the yotes are going out of their way to make a hit and the hawks now are making plays off of drawing them out of position.

Now if sharp would get his head out of his ass and stop turning the puck over, this game could be over with a hawks win by now.

They're missing the non-core gritty guys, like Ben Eager, Troy brouwer, Kris versteeg, Andrew ladd, Adam Burish etc

Those guys did what needed to be done.

Oh well. Pheonix isn't that impressive, and some of those chances will start going in during this series.

After reading all 24 pages of the comments to the Shea Weber fine on TSN HERE they're pretty much in agreement with what was said here in that the fine was too light. But, from reading the comments from Preds fans or should I say anti-Wings fans it is pretty apparent Zetterberg ran Weber into the boards, elbowed him in the head, elbowed him in the back, foot stomped Weber, butt ended Weber, and slashed his knees.

My only explanation is that Z is a ninja.

Wow. A Chicago sports writer sticking up for the Red Wings. Never thought I'd see the day.

I guess they realize that Nashville is on the rise and Detroit is on the decline so their rivalry with Nash will be more heated over the next several years.

And I agree, Fingolfin269 - that was a stupid comparison just because one of his beloved Hawks got suspended for doing something much more stupid.

I've said it before but I'll say it again any way. Things that happen during play are much more severe than after a play, and in this case not just the play but the entire game. Everyone has seen all out brawls go down after a game in the playoffs. The only surprise playing out here, is that a Wing didn't step up in Zetter's defense. Kronwall should of Kronwalled Weber's ass. Franzen should have mule kicked him. Someone should have come over and set the tone for game 2. Instead, Nashville has all the momentum

Ya I got the same impression. I was thinking "Am I just being a Detroit homer?" then I read a lot of the national boards and was like lolnope.

Nashville was just pissed they were getting schooled in 5 on 5. Rinne basically had an amazing (and lucky) game. I don't think they can hang on for game two.

Tim Thomas notched his sixth career playoff shutout and the Bs are 15 wins away from a Stanley Cup repeat.

Holtby was pretty good for Washington during regulation but he badly misplayed the GWG by Chris Kelly.

GO BRUINS!

I hope Detroit comes out reckless tonight and we make them pay. Its going to be a great game and series marred by Webers temporary Hulk Smash.

Come on Philly steal another from the Pens tonight.

Hell yes, go Philly.

RE: the hit on Zetterberg, if it wasn't hard enough to break his nose then it really wasn't that hard. Yeah Weber shouldn't have done it but emotions run high and Weber loves to intimidate, that's his game as a defenseman. The $2500 fine is a joke but that's the best they can do w/out suspending him (and completely crippling) the Preds.
