the Pens do have a much more varied offensive attack style... after the Habs beating the Caps though, pardon the cliche but they could be this year's team of destiny in the East :awe:

the two-headed dragon of Crosby and Malkin will be all over the Habs though... this is gonna be EPIC

The way the habs D shutdown ovie and company was good. Plus side for the habs is they got gill, who was on the stanley cup roster for the pens.

You didn't hear about fifty times how many shots were blocked or deflected? They had great team defense against an offensive-minded team. How do you win playoff hockey? Not like how the Caps tried.

Sure they blocked a shit load of shots. but how many made it thru, 40 something tonight and 50 something the other night. You put any goalie with an average preformance in place of halak, and montreal would be having a silent ride back to canada. I just don't see that level of defense holding up.

That was also the NHL's #1 offense, by a lot. Halak and the D in front of him can be a little less amazing and still be ok against the Pens.

Awesome job to the Habs for an outstanding game and shutting down Ovechicken - they did comment that the Caps tend to enter solo-superstar mode on home ice.

The last 5 minutes were freakin terrifying...especially when the Caps scored and the Habs ended up in the penalty box - I thought for sure the game would end up in OT. Good to see them make it to the next round!

Vancouver or Chicago in West
With Vancouver or Chicago taking it in final...

I believe:

Habs officially blocked 41 shots that game and Halak saved another 41, which was close to a 3:1 ratio of blocks:shots of goal. Talk about hunkering down, jesus. Also from ESPN:

<<<• The 16 shots on goal by the Canadiens are the fewest by a winning team in a Game 7 since the Lightning in Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup finals. The Lightning had 15 shots on goal in their 2-1 win over the Flames at home on June 7, 2004.>>>

It was the defensive juggernaut vs offensive juggernaut and defense won. Playoff hockey doesn't get any better than tonight and I hope the Habs give the Pens a taste of this newly discovered defense as well. Washington is way more high powered on O than the Pens with 7 players over 20 goals or more. Malkin and Crosby better be ready b/c they are about to hit the immovable wall that is Montreal.

ALL ABOARD!!!

While I'm excited for this coming series I don't expect a repeat defensive performance. I think you guys are going a little too overboard with this.

They still lost 3 games of 7 in an exhausting series, it would be different if they had won in 4 or 5 strictly on lights out D...instead of this hardening their defensive chances against the Pens, for all we know they just got softened up.

The Penguins also have the superior playoff experience. Just as the many have already said about what has been done in the regular season not really meaning much anymore, what we do know is that the Penguins have been a hot team in the post season the past few years, making it to the championship two years ago and won it all last year.

Even if the Caps won this series (or even rolled in 4 games) I still think the Pens had a good chance of beating them. Now they get home ice against the Canadiens instead...

The same Pens that spent much of the season at the bottom of the PP ranking?

yes. Notice when the Caps varied their play style they were able to crack the Habs defence. Fucking Caps kept trying the same plays so much the blocks are uber accurate.

Pens may not score as much as the Caps in regular season, but hey, they moved on to second round.

The Canucks also had the audacity to retire the number seven. Not Cliff Ronning, which would have been questionable, no, they chose to retire...the fans. You can watch the ceremony in all of it's glory here. Dedicated to the passion of Canucks fans everywhere! I guess when there's nothing to celebrate self-congratulatory slaps on the back are all that's left.

This is a fanbase, that as the picture above shows, rallied to support Todd Bertuzzi. Bertuzzi, one of the worst villains the league has ever known, sucker-punched a player from behind, breaking his neck and ending his career. Canucks fans rallied for that man. It's one thing to tacitly approve of what Bertuzzi did by ignoring the story or the end result, but to rally by his side during his court appearance is beyond the pale.

LETS GO HAWKS!

WTF, the wings play again tonight? Did Phoenix do something to deserve a game 8?

Fuck Gary Bettman and fuck the Eagles and their milquetoast rock. Shouldn't they be dead or in rehab by now?

They played 2 days ago. That's how the playoffs work. Games are scheduled every other day. If they wanted more rest, maybe they should have won their series in less than 7 games. The habs have to play tomorrow after playing yesterday.

Wow, didn't imagine the Bruins in the #6 seed getting home ice during the playoffs. Really amazing that the bottom three teams knocked off the top three teams.
