ok, so thus far we have two groups of sore losers in this thread.

1) The "blame the refs / conspiracy theory" sore losers (this one has been a classic since the dawn of sports)

and

2) The "our high seeded team should be entitled to a first round victory, and if they lose, its because the low seeded team didn't deserve to be in the playoffs to begin with" sore losers (haven't really heard this one a lot until this year)

Why does everyone always make excuses for why their team lost? Every team gets bad calls. Every team is the beneficiary of bad calls. It all evens out. Detroit lost last night because they gave up 3 shitty goals in the first period.

And LOL @ people trying to point the blame away from their team choking after they lose to a low seed. The sense of entitlement is just great. The caps lost because they were 1/30 on their pp, and sucked on the pk. That's all there is to it.

You forgot: 3) People who complain about 1 and 2.

Nobody made excuses for the Caps, their Defense sucked. You're the only one riding that Waaaaaaahmbulance. Great defense and goalie will always trump a juggernaut offense in the playoffs. This is fact.

Another Fact: Montreal did not deserve to be in the playoffs after finishing second to last in their division, in no other sport* except hockey would this happen. That would be the equivalent of the Cleveland Browns or Baltimore Orioles making the playoffs. But kudos for Montreal actually showing up after their epic fail of a regular season. Hopefully they can perform at the same level against Cindy Crosby.

I don't think you follow hockey, or know anything about the sport past the last 5-10 years. While I don't think the fix is in, I do think the quality of officiating has gone down the toilet. Refs have been anything but consistent within games, let alone from game to game and crew to crew. At this point, it's rare to go 10 minutes without a whistle. There's just no flow anymore. It's also become obvious that the refs are using the jumbotron to provide some instant replay and overturn calls - not exactly by the book.

Beyond that, Colin Campbell has been horrible with discipline. Zero consistency, and he has made it clear that a player's reputation factors in. In other words, it can be personal if he wants it to be.

I'm sorry, but that's not hockey.

I agree with the above.

Whatever lapse led the to three goals cost the red wings the game, and they still almost clawed their way back to victory. I hope this is the Sharks being lazy, but I suspect unfortunately that it could be all Detroit.

The reffing was somewhat questionable I'd say on both sides with more of the questionable calls landing in favor of the sharks. Then again - reffing hasn't been particularly good in any series I've seen.

The wings sucked it up bad to let 3 goals in, I conceed that with no argument. The call they made on Franzen was criminal, it should have been a 5 min major the other way. They made an equally horrible call/non call in game 7 last round, put us down 5 on 3 for what was a questionable race for the puck, we got called because the gimp fell, oh well ... 30 seconds later the ref completely ignored what can only be called assault as our defenceman got punched in the back of the head hard enough to nearly take his helmet off, the ref saw it, that was very clear in the replay, and ignored it and left us down 5 on 3.

Yes, I know what i sound like, but it has gotten so bad I'm not going to hold back anymore. The reffing is horrible, plain and simple, and the fix is in worse than it has been in any other sport.

I haven't ranted against suspensions (and cambell) because I just haven't paid as much attention, I did notice some inconsistency, and that suspensions do get handed out based more from the result than from the intent.

I've said for a long time (not here) that if a $375,000 player takes out a $6M player, with an INTENT to injure him that player should sit the whole time his victim is out, and his team should be paying the injured player's salary, along with a suitably high fine directly to the injuring player.

Accidents happen, but players like Bryan Marchment who at one point had about $30M worth of players sitting with knee injuries need to be removed from the game.

I do think the last thing Bettman wants is a Wings/Pens finals. I don't think any bad penalty calls were because of anything Bettman initiated.
The Wings had a mental breakdown there in the first period and that was the game.
When the Sharks got that delay of game penalty with 10 min. to go the Wings just couldn't turn up the gas and get the job done.
The Wings always look better as a series goes on. They are good learners and they'll be a little more rested come Sunday.

The first part of that overtime was some of the most exciting hockey I've seen in a long time.

I'm sure a flyers fan would disagree.

Savard looked so happy when he scored I love the cam angle that shows the stick flying into the crowd.

meh, I almost made a post pre-empting yours.

As soon as someone mentions the refs, the "sore loser" card comes out. I guess I figured since it's pretty much the same people in here talking about the playoffs year after year, that we'd gotten past that.

Never

Yep, as a Flyers fan I disagree. But awesome comeback to force OT by the boys.

I think it will be pretty nasty, but fun as hell to watch. Wish I could watch the game tonight. Stuck at work.
