The referring in this game is a joke.

Sad to say but the penalty calling in this game is completely one-sided.
Brier gets raped at the end of the play in front of the ref and there is no call. Nope, can't have the home team go down 2 men....

Carolina has two goals on two powerplays that were the result of crap calling.
Buffalo came out playing fast and strong, but the penalty killing is wearing them down.
This game is over. Bring it back to HSBC.

I don't know. It seemed the refs started making "make up" ref calls in the third when Buffalo was down 4-1. On the positive side of things, we scored the last two goals of the game and we're coming home, and have home ice advantage for the rest of the series.

Edit: And it's very possible that both Tim Connolly and Teppo Numminen are back for game 3. I'm not that surprised we gave up 4 goals with only 4 NHL-quality D-men.

Well, unfortunately for you, I believe OLN has the NHL on contract for at least one more season. I think they do a fantastic job though. I'm lucky enough to get OLN in the Bay Area, CA, but I read that there are still a lot of markets that still don't have them. Hopefully, things will pick up before October rolls around.

There was an interesting article about NHL / TV broadcasts / OLN on ESPN. Text
It seems true that most of the LA Area doesn't get OLN as many friends who are hockey fans don't have access to the channel (We all brood in frustration). Calls to Cox Cable have proved fruitless even though i hear i can just buy OLN for a smal lfee, they keep telling me I have to upgrade to a better package. Psh, forget that.

IMO I think they REALLY need to fix Hockey on TV. Fans of it right now can follow, but even then, they need to do a better job me thinks. My roommate was watching a ducks-flames game and he noticed that the presentation (camera work mainly) of the game seemed subpar. Some cool camera angles (over the net, in the net) but the general view kinda sucks.

Watching the NBA playoffs there is no moment where I cannot see where the ball is. Any reply it's clear where the ball is, and I can see it at any moment, even critical ones. But in NHL Coverage, some highlight reals of goals, the puck isn't even in the shot since the camera has not followed it fast enough.

I've only really watched Hockey on TV for a couple of years, but I wonder what they can do to improve it. I know the mouse-tail style yellow trail thing didn't work.. But i'm curious, what do you guys think about TV coverage on NHL - keeping in mind that it's not to improve how YOU watch the game persay, but how to generate new fans, etc.

OLN's camera work is HORRIBLE! That is the first thing I noticed when I started watching early in the season. They tried to get too close, and would constantly have the puck off screen, meaning I can't see the play develop. Also makes me kind of dizzy with THAT much movement of the camera. I ended up spending the loot and getting the hockey package because OLN wasn't cutting it. They would only play games on Mondays and Tuesdays, when Fri/Sat are the biggest game days. OLN banked on the Penguins/Sid being good as there were far too many games of the Pens.

With the hockey package, I was able to watch good games, and have better camera work. I got accustomed to this and when I had to go back to OLN when the game I wanted to watch was actually on OLN the same gripes as before reemerged.

On the positive side, in the playoffs OLN hasn't made me want to shoot myself, as much. Not perfect but an improvement over the regular season.

I think the NHL made a huge mistake going with OLN instead of ESPN. I know I don't think the "big" sports on OLN, I imagine the less popular, more eccentric sports (Rodeo/Cycling/Fishing). When I think ESPN I think of the big 4 of sports. Baseball, Football, Basketball, and Hockey. Not to mention ESPN is lower on the dial so it will have a higher number of "surf throughs." I know that I will skip over channels when I'm surfing if I know that they normally don't play things I'm interested in. Hockey could have picked up many more casual viewers by being on ESPN.

If I'm not mistaken, ESPN is the one who turned down the NHL. Besides, being on their network in past years has done little to improve viewership / bring new fans. It's not the right thing for me to say, but I've just about given up on any ideas to bring new fans. If they can't follow the puck, they get frustrated and don't want to watch. It takes a bit of knowledge of the game to follow the play well - and for that you need to watch more. It's just not easy for newcomers... it's definitely a niche sport and will not likely be near the top sports ever... unless they paint the ice black and make the puck white.

I thought the NHL passed off ESPN for the higher bid of OLN.

I agree though, people don't want to take a little bit of time to learn the game. I know many people who love hockey, but hate watching it on TV, and will be the first person to join me when I have tix to a game.

The "I can't follow the puck" is the biggest complaint I hear, followed by talking about the glowing puck a few years back. I just go along with it, but I never really liked the glowing puck, I can follow it just fine. The glow around it makes it seem arcadey, more like a video game and less like a sport.

I have realized that Hockey is a niche sport. Everyone I talk with at work, maybe a couple have caught a game or two, maybe one actually follows what is happening. This is the playoffs, there isn't much else going on in the realm of hockey, so I would think this would be the best and easiest time to be knowledgeable about the game. I guess not :brokenheart:. When ever I find a hockey fan its an occasion .

Camera's, oh you guys did it now.

[rant]WTF? I don't want no view of that dudes face, no behind the Net view, not fricking corner camera, and the dude operating the God-given center ice camera should have a knuckle crushed everytime he adjusts the zoom! :| During live action only 1 camera is necessary, the Center Ice camera. If you want a camera in every nook and cranny for replays, fine, but quit frickin changing cameras mofos!! :|:|

I'm a saving my pennies and when I have $billions I'm gonna start buying up Sports network and start firing idiots left and right. :| [/]

Holy moly! The Oilers, despite the lead, are hanging on and need to get their asses in gear.

Wow, Oilers didn't deserve that win, but they'll take it!

The Ducks are pretty much finished, but they certainly could drag things out if they continue to play like this and the Oilers do too.

Wow....what an insane 3rd period...

Ducks are done IMO...

Now, assuming the Oilers sweep the Ducks...and the East final goes 6 or 7 games, I wonder if the layoff effect will get to the Oilers...
