Maybe I need to get a guide or something, but I have no idea how to start alchemy... making potions and everything...

But then again - I haven't had much time to do anything lately... Getting my new house and all I've only been able to play for 30 minutes or so a night...

Right, thanks for that brilliant answer Captain Obvious  But I'm sure that's not what he nor others are looking for. What we're looking for is how do you know what ingredients to combine to make certain things?

If I use the console commands to change races and sign, will it reset my levels or is it safe to do so? I obviously expect my attributes to adjust according but it shouldn't reset them back to stock, right?

I'm gonna go with a Briton/Mage instead of my current Imperial/Antorch. Casting is too much fun!

Many folks have a hard time deciding what class to play.
Whenever I start a new RPG I always go with a fighter. They usually have the best balance throughout the game.
Once I get used to it I pick a mage.

In Morrowind my last character was a high elf with the Apprentice sign. I managed to start off with 200 Magicka, I think.
I also noticed that custom-made spells in both games usually cost more magicka than a spell already in the world.
I ended up making a bunch of spells in a mod, with values I thought were reasonable.
Then I attached them to a spell merchant from another mod.

My character's already made. Now I just want to change it mid game instead of starting over. I guess, I'll try the console tweaks and see how it it reset's everything. If it does reset my stats to level 1, I'll just load up a saved game and just deal with it. If not, I'll switch to a proper mage build with Briton Class and Mage sign.

A fighter is too boring for me. I prefer the micro and thinking involved as a mage.

I think in general you want to combine ingredients that have the same effects.

If you add items to the menu, it will tell you what the potential effects of the potion are.

I'm playing as a thief character and in my regular looting, I've found a lot of recipes just lying around in homes and alchemy shops. Look around a bit.

This is Elder Scrolls, it doesn't hold your hand. Start experimenting, do alchemy related quests, pick up some books on alchemy in the game. You should find some recipes and shopping lists in the mages guild, there's also a quest out of I believe Cheydinhall or Skingrad for some rarer alchemy related items.

Like effects in ingredients are combinable. Just load up your inventory with a bunch of ingredients, and start combining. Once you put down on ingredient, it'll tell you automatically which other ingredients are combinable. And it'll even tell you the effects. You'll want more than the mortor and pestle though... ther's 3 other items that you can use in addition to that (go into any mage guild, and you'll see them lying together... two of them are beakers like... i haven't done alchemy in awhile, since alchemy is my major skill now, and i'm not ready to level 10 levels just yet by doing alchemy)

(or is it because thats all I did, was play the main quest)

Update:

Changing the signs has no effect on the attributes but changing class and race messes them all up. Likely to their default but I didn't really check since it was clear they were much lower.

I'm just happy I could change the sign and get my mana regen going!

PSA: Anyone who wants to change their character's face, press ~ to bring up the console and type "showracemenu". Once you are done editing, do NOT exit the face editing menu, but press Esc and save your game. Then load it and enjoy your new face!

Change the race at your own risk though; I think it will mess up your stats.

Just to sorta reply to the question I asked before about shop gold gold limits at 1200. I cant believe I didnt think of this before but, this is what you do to raise the shop limit to sell stuff.

You buy a Fortify <anyskill> restoration spell. Go to arcane university to the create a spell shop. Click merchantile for the skill, Put it to cast on self and magnitude to 100 with a 5-10 second duration(depending of course what level restoration you have already and mana it costs)

You just go to a shop to sell stuff(id pick one of them that has a higher limit to begin with). Then cast the added 100 skill bonus merchantile spell on yourself, and click the shop guy. He should give you an option to invest 500 gold in the store. Do it. All done. Now the sellback limit should be WAY higher. And its permanent as well, even after you spell wears off!

If you are around level 15+, where you start getting really high value drops, this will help you gain alot more cash on your items.

Also, you could always get a high CHARM spell as well to cast on shop keepers, then you can raise their disposition and even sell stuff back even higher.

Nah, it's standalone. I haven't played any of the previous 3 games. However, I'm also level 7 and have yet to run a single mission for the main quest.

It worked after reloading

There seems to be a bug with the next quest too - Swampy Cave.

this is one game i don't want to 'spoil' with a walkthru or guide. . . .

bumbling around without a clue . . . reading and figuring out the quests and what to do next is most of the fun. . . . i closed my first 'O' gate at Kevatch and didn't realize i left the guys at the altar without retaking the city. . . good thing for fast-travel.

do they grow back? i could only find 5 at Shadeleaf Copse and 1 in a cave.

i finally tried my first Potion . . . and i'm a Mage
this game has SO many possibilities, i only found a 'need' on the Planes of Oblivion [i am a Destruction and Blade specialist] . . . Level 7 and so far, no problems with my enemies . . . i am going to look at alchemy next.

awesome game . . . holds my interest . . . not bad for my first real Fantasy RPG.

and yes, i am getting regular crashes . .. about every hour or so [about the time i should quit playing]
