What race are you btw? Certain towns in Oblivion are quite racist, the neighboring province only banned slavery fairly recently. That may have been why you were not welcome(all pure Elf races, Khajiit, Argonian and Orc have major issues while the Imperials and Nords run into it at a lesser degree- mainly from each other).

The locks I haven't figured out yet- I just do the auto attempt and buy as many lockpicks as I can(at least until I can pick up a level 100 unlock spell).

I picked Nord, being a Minnesota Viking and all... heheh... It looks like I have a lot to learn about this game (as expected). Should keep me quite busy for a while. I really enjoy the combat, but after casting a few lower level spells I am seriously considering rerolling to be a wizard... I always loved playing as a Wizard... That is the problem with these cool games, I can never decide what I really want to be. In most RPGs I always choose a tank first (Knight, Paladin, etc...) and then followup with a Mage or some sort... Oh well, going to stick with my Knight for now while I get used to things.

Thanks for the information... If you ever figure out how the locks work, let me know... On the PC version you have to use the mouse and when there is more than 2 tumbles to pick, I can never do it manually, but I can get it on the 1st or 2nd try when I do auto most of the time... Oh well, off to play the game for a while.

this game is bigger...broader...slightly more confusing as to what to do. i can follow the story but...i have been playing 6 hours and have no idea where the fighters guild is...or thief's guild. atleast morrowind was dense enough to easily locate places like that.

easiest way for the theifs guild is to get arrested foir stealing and opt to go to jail. a short time after your release, you'll be approached by the guild.

I have played a few hours now, runs great at 1600x1200 res with HDR with my Leadtek 7800GT OC card (2GB of PC ram too),even outside is fine at that res.

I have decided to go with Spellsword character since I like magic and melee skills, so can use heavy armour, sword with magic etc.. so I'm happy with my choice so far.

I was surprised how well it runs on my PC and I have nothing to complain about in the graphics department .

This is one game I'm not rushing unlike some people.

When you push up on the tumblers you will notice that occasionally they will raise slowly and hesitate for a second before coming back down. This always happens at random intervals, one or two fast ones and one slow one etc. I always lock the tumbler in place on a slow one. It makes it so much easier to pick anything, and I've maybe broken two lockpicks since I started doing this.

***********possible spoiler***********
There is a special lockpick in the game that you can acquire that will not break.

If you really are interested, I can try. But my screenshots will end up looking a lot like the ones posted on the official website. Clearly, it's not as sharp and pretty with a nVidia 6600GT at 1024x768 with everything on medium as some of the nicer setups that have everything cranked and AA turned on, but it still looks very nice on my lower-end setup and runs smoothly.

Is there a way to see what items in your inventory was stolen and remove them?

I just came from Kvatch to get Martin and Jauffre to the (forgot the name, but it's high up in the mountain) where I became part of the Blade. Now, I'm trying to go into the city right below the mountain but everytime I get in there, the guard says stop and asks if I want to go to jail or resist arrest. I am carrying too many items to see what is missing after I finish my jailtime but afaik I get all my weapons/shields back but after jail my half a dozen skills get reduced after jail.

Actually, it doesn't say what I did wrong, just that I broke a law.

Any hints on this?

With the system in your sig, you'll pretty much get the graphics you see with the official screenshots.

Does anybody know if the Dark Elf ghost levels as you level?

And anybody have any advice on alchemy... or a website with recipes and How-Tos!

Okay, I'm answering my own dumb question.

Stolen items are indicated by a red hand on the item in the inventory (didn't know that til now).

Also, looking through my skill menu (the last tab on the right), it looks like the stats show I have a bounty because I murdered two people and stolen 5 items... who knew. That's why I'm going to jail.

This is the thing that killed Morrowind for me... i played for 2 hours, and i always play melee in RPGs... i'm just a melee junkie. But i remember the first cave i went into, i kept dying to the rats, or it took forever to win a fight... i didn't know what i was doing.

This combat system is absolutely fantastic. BEST combat system in ANY RPG game hands down. IT's so real. You can manuever, you can block... you can't just jump into battle randomly swinging, especially if you have allies with you, because you'll hit them. Just like in real life, you can't just go in swinging wildly. Instead, you position yourself and then attack. I remember watching the combat on Electric Playground preview, and i thought it was stupid... but man, it's absolutely awesome.

It would be nice if they added some kind of Diablo II-esque multiplayer maybe like 1-4 people can play together or something..

Really? I think I'll go check them out.

Edit: Those screens look awsome. I sure hope your right . But we will see when I get the game tomorrow.

Maybe they could of added some scripted events... ala Baldur's Gate 2 for a more typical PC RPGISH type of feeling such as the mini quests in Baldur's gate 2... windspear hills.. etc, something that can related to the main quest.

Such as when you needed to collect the fee for Gaelaen Bayle in BG2, so you had to go to the copper coronet to be hired as a mercenary... which lead into a more complex and intriguing storyline as you went in along...

The power of TES series is in its open endedness, not in its storyline. Obviously each has its strengths and its weaknesses, but there is something to be said for a true virtual playground that allows you to interact with the world in any way you see fit, not just how the scripted event deems fit.

My Screenshots
Note: graphics settings on lowest (I could have taken more interesting shots, but generally during the interesting moments I was struggling not to get killed ).

My 9800XT actually handles it better than I thought it would.

As long as I turn all shadows off, and all grass off, and the view distances to a little below the highest, with no bloom and no AA, I can play it at 1280x1024@ ~30fps.

Can't wait till my 7900GT's come back from evga (UPS has them as I write this).

With the grass off, do you see wolves before they get really close? I tend to not find them until they're within a few feet of me.

I can see them from a mile away, yes. Actually, you can "hear" anything from pretty much a mile away too because the dynamic music changes when a monster has seen you - whether you've seen him or not. Ruins the scare factor in dungeons unfortunately.

*Possible Spoiler*

Never played any of the other Elder Scrolls games, could you turn into a vampire in those? Just did tonight and it gave me quite a skill boost, pretty neat stuff.

Back from first marathon. Just got to first town, buttered everyone in sight up though my speechcraft is only a minor skill. Haven't figured out lockpicking yet (thank you alteration). Have to say it is awesome so far, better than Morrowind. I suck at the combat (took me aweek to learn to block in Gothic 2), sticking to wailing. However, graphics are only ok (water is nice + sky + grass), but I can't complain, craptastic Radeon 9600 Advantage only runs at 800x600 with settings on medium, draw distance only 1/3 ish. Must say that it DOES run smoothly in and outdoors though (well FEAR did too with crap settings).

Semi-spoiler
Loved the artist's "level", awesome concept and textures. Think I saw Lucy in the sky...
