If you get expert in Mercantile, you'll be able to raise the gold limit in a shop by 500 gold.

So thats the max then? That sucks. I have 5 $5000 items that ill only be able to sell for $1200. Doh. Im definitely far off from expert in that so heh.

I'm having a problem, maybe someone can help. I'm a little burnt out on questing, so I decided to roam around and discover places and clear them out for loot and whatnot. The problem is fighting ghosts and such. I only have one enchanted weapon, and it kinda sucks cause it takes a ton of damage and I can't repair it yet (not high enough armorer)... and I'm an Imperial Warrior so my spells are junk. I'm not able to clear out these places. I'm in the habit of quicksaving whenever I see a ghost because I know it's going to take me 3 or 4 tries to kill it. Am I just expected to have enchanted armor to resist these things or learn to cast or what?

*EDIT* Also, are the mobs you encounter dependant on your level? I swear I've come back to some places I've already been to and there are different mobs. Invisible mountain lions, those yellow wisp things... before I remember goblins being at some of these places.

I am also an Imperial Warrior and have found that the game from the get-go was very tough. Could kill rats from the beginning sure but my first Oblivion gate was just 'any thing more than two scamps' could be the end of my character. So I decreased the difficulty a bit to make it playable and it has been much better.

I am a very heavy user of the flare, does very little damage but I shoot at least 2-3 off before the NPC is finally near enough to hit me. So my destruction skill is relatively high compared to my other skills.

Also, you don't have to wait to repair magical items. Just visit a mage guild and someone in there should be able to repair magical items for you (depending on the item, it can be very costly).

As far as mobs and levels, a lot of people have been whining about the 'lucrative' leveling system that Oblivion comes with by default. The 'scale' leveling practically makes it so that the game more or less becomes challenging as you get into higher levels. So for example, the scamp you fought as a level 1 will be as difficult as the scamp you find as a level 20 character because all the enemy NPCs will level with you. A lot of people don't like this scale leveling system because they expect a high level character to be able to easily defeat the NPC that they had trouble beating as a low level character. So yes, you will find that the mobs you encounter will not be easy to defeat just because you are a higher level.

I have the houses because of alchemy. Its the easiest way to make money in the game.

I chose to get the houses because they are neat and convenient places to store my junk.
Granted, you really only NEED the shack by the IC. Its in the center of the map and is cheap. But you cant buy the best items in the game. They have to be found. So it makes sense to spend money on houses and horses.
Its also smart to up your alchemy and carry around a mortar and petestal (at minimum). Its nice to be able to create a cure poison or restore magicka potion when you're in the field.

As for the other issues, just about everything in the game is leveled with you. (Similar to Final Fantasy 8). Its a lame-azz way to keep the challenge up.
You can kill ghosts with dwarven weapons, the Blade of Woe, and the Longsword of Choral. (I forget its exact name.) Supposedly silver weapons too, but I think that didnt work for me for some reason.
It seems that two weak or one strong spell attack will also kill them.

I'm pretty sure Silver will damage ghosts - I seem to remember plinking silver arrows at one and dealing damage. But not much. I've moved on from Silver weaponry at this point though...

At any rate, best way I've found to deal with a Ghost so far as a physical fighter, is a cheapo Bound Dagger spell. Daedric will hurt ghosts just fine, and 30 seconds is usually plenty of time to waste one.

Honestly the game could've been harder. I haven't touched the difficulty settings (left at normal). But nonetheless so far, the challenge of the game is well met. Having to grab sweet enchanted items from high lvld enemies is well worth it

lvl 27 atm.

This is probably the wrong forum to ask this since almost everyone here is running sweet monster machines but what the hell!

I have an old system. It was a sweet monster machine back in the day but I got married and bought a house - it's hard to justify spending $$$ on a machine that is fast enough for everything BUT gaming, but godamn this game looks badass!
Anyways, will Oblivion run on my rig?

AthlonXP "1900+" (it's actually a 1700 but it's OC'd)
1gig PC3200 @ ~415mhz (2x512 Corsair)
6600GT AGP (OC'd a bit).

I used to have a Geforce4200 but upgraded so I could run the Source engine better - CSS and HL2DM are totally playable now with decent settings (although they can still dip down a fair amount in some spots, haven't tweaked my .cfg yet).

So, assuming the answer is NO, Oblivion will not be playable - will it be if I buy a faster SocketA CPU? I am limited to SocketA for now - can't afford to rebuild my entire system for at least another year - but I imagine I can hunt down a 2500M and OC it to hell...?

The final question: What IS the slowest system that can still run Oblivion at playable levels?

Naw, silver works on ghosts. Same as morrowind. Any kind of magical weapon also works.

Trouble is, I think silver deteriorates faster then other metals.

I think the only thing thats really going to hurt you is the cpu, as you suspected. I'm not sure how hungry oblivion is for cpu power...but it does recommend a 3ghz or AMD equivilent cpu. My wife's machine is a sempron 64 @ 2340mhz with 1gb of ram and a 6800nu and she runs it pretty well. (High default settings except 8x6 resolution, no bloom/HDR as neither of us really likes the effect.)

Nonetheless I'm going to pick up an nvidia silencer and a better psu to overclock her video card with.

Its a tough call on the what the slowest you can get by with in this game is...its a pig of a game, and some people consider different things unplayable.

2 questions guys: Hoping someone can help!

1. Here's a problem. I'm a mage but my sign is Antinosh which has a passive of Stunned Magicka but 50% absorb. Againt other mages it cool since I soak up and hit back but when trying to level against level melee, I keep having to buy Sorcery Potion to keep my mana full. Is there a console command or a way to change my sign so that I can regen Magicka??

2. How do I enchant weapons???

1. There probably is a console command, but I don't know it. No question you picked the worst sign.

2. You need to get all the Mages Guilds' recommendations and then enter the Arcane University. You can enchant weapons there in the Chrimatorium (sp?). Or you can use the sigil stones by simply clicking on them and merging them with an item (nothing required).

Thanks for the info PingSpike - I'm actually pretty flexible on "playable" - I cut my teeth playing Doom2 on a 486. Hell I remember running GLQuake on a P100 with a verite2100 - a solid 15FPS with a 300 ping and I was pwning! I played Doom3 all the way through on my system when it still had a gf4200 in it

I have done a LOT of searching for my answer before I posted the question, it seems like Oblivion performance varies pretty damn significantly - I've seen a lot of reports from people with highend systems complaining of crap FPS and then reports of people with midrange systems saying it runs great with the autodetected settings. Hard to tell where the real threshold is of playable FPS - I still haven't found many reports of people running it on slower systems, just a few people running video cards slower than mine on systems faster than mine.

Yep:
Hit tilde (~)
type: showbirthsignmenu (there's aslo showracemenu and showclassmenu)

2. How do I enchant weapons???

You need to join the mages guild and get into the university. Once you're there, everything is very simple and straightforward (you can make new spells there too!).

That's not a problem! I actually like equipment that deteriote faster, since i can work up my armorer skills quicker. As long as the equipment lasts through a fight or two, then it's fine with me.

The fence limit is $1500... but his mercantile skill is Master, so it's a lot harder to haggle with him. I don't know if you can raise him limit either.

But are you really short on money with $5k items dropping? I'm only lvl 13, with the max of 2500 things dropping, and i have more money than i know what to do with.

What's the cheat method? Since I'm a mage, this sucks. Also, do you happen to know where that statue is located so I can see if the effects are temp or perm? What sign would you recommend for a Mage.

Looks like this should work:
Change Your Birth Sign!
During gameplay, press ~ to enter the console, and then enter the following password to unlock the corresponding cheat. If you entered the password correctly, the cheat will take effect immediately.
Password is case-sensitive.
Change Your Birth Sign: Showbirthsignmenu

Since I'm an Imperial Mage, what sign do you (and others reading) think I should opt for?

Id get the 50 mana one probably for pure mage. Dont get the 100 mana one, it gives you 100% weakness to magic. And that atronoch?(whatever its called), sucks because it doesnt regen.
