Again, I totally see your point and it makes sense. I can see why Bethesda did it this way. But it just doesn't *feel* 100% to me. Not that my ideas would be any better in true game-testing, cuz I have no idea. And I'm not very far into the game either. I just completed the entire Thieves' Guild quest-line as that is the character I rolled (haven't even begun on the main quest or any of the other guilds). I honestly planned on NOT joining the FG or MG because of role-playing (saving that for another char roll), but I'm thinking of continuing on with this char through all the guilds and main quest anyway (lvl 17 right now).

I really think that someone will come up with a good, well-balanced mod that handles random mobs, bosses, quest battles, items, and loot the way I envision it. It just might be a while before it happends. Then again, I'm not even 100% sure of what I am looking for, so who knows. But, you are correct-- I wouldn't see much value in running through a dungeon with low-lvl gimps with sorry loot and a boring quest. So, I guess I'm looking for *some* scaling-- such as lvl ranges, and some +lvl bosses... that kind of thing.

The level-scaling has been a subject of some heated debate, where it seems that players are strongly committed to one side or the other. I'm definitely finding myself in the middle and could easily see good arguments for both. I'm hoping I can find a good middle-ground, so that once I complete the game with this character in a few months, I can replay and have it feel like a new game in a sense.

Azura's Star is required for those into heavy enchanting. If you gave it up in the main quest I feel for you. I've used mine hundreds of times(I've created over a hundred enchanted items and I recharge my glass mace frequently).

Ebony blades... again, i didn't see too many magical versions, if any.

Transcendant Sigil Stone plus ebony blade makes a pretty nasty magical weapon. Not as nasty as some of the better daedric offerings, but plenty powerful enough.

Actually, my main character is an unarmored monk who uses h2h (his class name is actually monk). I did it mainly for roleplaying and for a challenge. I cast spells to gain as much benefit as I can for being unarmored, and it is essential to get your block up so you can make opponents recoil while blocking with h2h.

Overall, it would be easier just using weapons/armor, but I find the experience enjoyable. Plus, I never have to repair crap.

I do have one gripe about weapon drops - I've been playing a rogue/assassin type character and part of the "role playing" I've been doing is to stick with shortswords. It takes good footwork to fight high level stuff with one, but I was liking the type of play. Maybe it's just a random thing, but they stopped apearing on enemies for me after lvl 15 or 16. I fought my way up to lvl 25 with a plain Glass Shortsword - only one I ever saw - the Ebony and Daedric stuff stated dropping, but every time it seems like it was some monstrosity like a Claymore or a War Hammer, or a dagger from some Necro...

I finally said screw it, and killed Umbra (in a cheesy, but in-character sort of way ) at level 25. It was time for a better blade, and the game wasn't helping. But Umbra is a Longsword... I suppose it fits the role since my char has Strength maxed out - running around with a 3 ft sword is something a 100 STR char can do if they want - but it ain't got no finesse.

I've taken over the Fighter's guild and I have about 58,000 cash.

Trying to decide between Burma, Chorral and Skingrad for my house.

With that much gold, why don't you buy them all up? I'm beginning to realize that there is nothing else I should spend my gold on except for buying houses. All the best weapons and armor I found in caves and forts so no need to waste gold on buying those. I guess you can buy more spells and etc except I finished the game at level 11 and my magicka is too low for some of the real good spells.

Someone enlighten me and let me know what I should be buying!

I understand what you are saying and had the same complaints in Morrowind. Personally, I think it would be cool if you joined the Thieves guild but then realized you couldn't get past Quest 4 because the enemies were way too strong. So you had to go do something else and then come back to it when you are stronger. It would be cool to walk into a dungeon and see something that looks like it can simply kick your ass, and then deciding that maybe you shouldn't be here at this time. I completely agree with that, well more so in Morrowind because really nothing in Morrowind provided any challenge what so ever, at least in Oblivion I feel challenged even though I know all the content I am being presented is beatable. I suppose I am just happy it doesn't have the same pitfall as Morrowind and that keeps me content.

The main problem i had with Oblivion were the magical drops. There just wasn't that many variety, and the ones that they did have, some were just overpowering. I didn't do blunt weapons, but i imagine if i did, and i got the Hatred Heart, that would have completely trivialized the game for me. They could have just had a couple of content designer do nothing but create new equipment for an entire day... they didn't even have to create new models/textures, just reuse them. Goldbrand is the only model using that sword in the game. The Akiviri katanas... i don't think there was a single magical version of them at all. Ebony blades... again, i didn't see too many magical versions, if any.

If there was anything in Oblivion that I'd criticize (and more so in Morrowind) it is the implementation of magic as a whole. From spells to enchantments. First off, a lot of spells in both games are game breaking. 100% charms, 100% chameleons, levitation (morrowind), shield, detect life (wtf see through walls), invisibility. The problem is the developers do not understand checks and balances. They need to go play EQ.

I'll give you some examples, you start making a spell called detect life because you think it would be cool to know where things were before you get to them. Ok that's fine, but make it only detect the LIVING such that zombies, skeletons and other undead do not show up with the spell. This makes it a beneficial spell but one you cannot rely on thoughtlessly throughout the game. Checks and balances.

Ok, current chameleon is % based. Terrible solution. Make it number based instead. Chameleon 1, Chameleon 2. That way you can make monsters that can see beyond certain levels. It also allows for growth where as 100% defines a hardcap, you can never have more than 100% chameleon. Also, make the AI cast spells if they see doors opening by themselves or they are getting attacked. Have mages cast detect life, make warriors swing wildly instead of just standing there. Also, I'd prevent 100% chameleon as a permanent enchant. Make chameleon enchants not stack, so that the best enchanted piece of chameleon gear is all you need.

If theres one thing I hope for in TES5, it is that Bethesda sits down and rethinks their entire magic lineup. But there's actually a few things I hope for, that the player will move more like Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell, able to grab cliffs / scale walls / etc, and that the AI is about 300x better.

I have about 90k and havn't really spent it on anything except 1 big buy. The haunted house in Anvil is worth the cost, it's a pretty cool quest as well.

Training can be pretty expensive as can spells.

After buying the black horse for 5k, I found out that the only other use for money is for skill trainers.

Houses, what for? I simply dump loot at the nearby Fighter's Guild chest.

Im sure its been asked before but Ive been playing for 8 hours and my 'progress to next level' bar is not even halfway full.

Ive completed 7 quests and ran around trying to find stuff to kill. Is there a good place to practice blunt and hand to hand and other skills so that I can try and increase these in hopes of leveling? I have walked to the end of the map and could only find deer which run too fast to kill and random wolves which are very scarce too.

This game is fun, but It seems im just doing quest after quest with no feeling of progress except for another quest being completed.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks guys!

I did the same thing. I put a 25 health absord sigil stone in my ebony blade... and that seemed a little too unbalancing if it goes off every hit, and i can easily recharge it after a couple of fights with my azura stone.

But i would have liked there to have been some more variety of items being dropped. I wasn't a big fan of the enchantment system either... maybe i played EQ for too long, and i like the random procs better than a constant effect that goes off every hit. If the effect was maybe a random chance of going off once every 5 hits or so, with a chance to absorb like 100 health, that would be much more exciting. You can get the weapon effect to go off just when you're low on health, and the next thing you know, you're back up to mid-life... or you're having a hard time killing the thing, and when the right effects goes off, boom, it goes down.

Yeah, i think the last shortsword was the elven... which i loved. I put like a 20 fire effect on mine, and used mine well beyond when i should have upgraded. I just like the way it looked, and how fast it was.

But the ebony daggers that drop are amazing, so moving to that shouldn't be a big deal.

I like skingrad. Biggest house, and it's just down the street from shops and the fighters and mages guild. Literally, when you zone into the city, just run down the street, and to your left, is your house... run down that same street some more, and it's the shops... a little turn (the same street), and you have the fighters and mages guild. Very convenient.

Wow, what are your major skills? Is blunt and handtohand in there? If so, you're saying you didn't even make it to half a level bar after completing 7 quests? If you want to work on those skill though, there's a questin Leyawiin i believe with a lady who has a scamp problem. You can practice on those scamps.

Unarmed combat is overpowered. After I disarm opponents in the arena, they're able to knock me to the ground with a few punches and do more damage than they did with their weapons. Fists through platemail. It also appears that they can block swords and axes with their hands. Very realistic.

Is it about as realistic as being able to throw fireballs or conjure up skellies?

That's kind of an apples to oranges comparison. Even fantasy games need to have somewhat realistic physics and balance. Punching through platemail and blocking swords with one's bare hands kills the immersion a lot more than fireballs and skeletons, because I expect those.

I guess you haven't been exposed to many RPGs with monks/martial artists.

ROFL,
Thanks, I forgot about my 12th level monk in 3rd ed DnD pen and paper. She could kick pretty much anyone's ass at the same level, full plate or not.

Hi there,

I just started playing this and I am stuck at the cave area once you get outside the sewers. I killed a bunch of imps and rats and got to a place with water. I go through a stone door and there is a throne in the room but I can't seem to find my way pass this. I tried retracing my steps but the way I came is blocked.

Any help would be appreciated.

My fighter is now god at level 25 and I have finished all the quests barring the thieves guild. Starting afresh with a mage/archer build.

Conjuration is too powerful. Once you work it up all you do is summon Xivali and hide in a corner like a little girl while blocking with a shield. Add some destruction spells for long range butt kicking and youre golden.

Sounds like you got turned around. The cave exits to the sewers and the sewers exit to the outside world (an island).

Should i just do everything else first?

[and how do you use it? . . . when i tried to Capture a major Daedra, it said i didn't have a large enough Soul Gem]

That portion of the quest was poorly written. Martin needs any daedric artifact i.e. any of the gifts from the Daedric Shrines. But this is not clear in what the quest log says. The first time through the game, I made the mistake of giving him Azura's Star. I will not be doing so this time.

It won't capture human/humanoid souls, just creatures.

As for how to keep Azura Star... go back to Martin, and talk to him... don't give him the Star though, he'll tell you he found another artifact... and if you explore the world enough, you'll find other artifacts/shrines that Martin doesn't even know about, they count. I got to keep both Azura and the Skeleton key
