I cleared the Arena at level 5. But I picked a combat class my first time around. If you picked a mage just use basic offensive spells as fast as possible, maybe start the match with a summoned monster for distraction.

If you picked a rogue, I dont know what to say. Bows arent as useful as other games and you can only backstab if you arent seen.
Try a weak invisibility spell or saving the magic arrows you find in dungeons. A 2 second paralyze can do wonders.

I haven't done Arena, completely forgot about it actually. I know it gives you some leveled opponents, should be interesting when I finally get around to doing it seeing as I'm lvl 36 atm

When you're up this high, leveled opponents can knock YOU on your @ss :Q

Dont ignore it completely. When you beat the Grand Champion you can take his equipment. Something tells me that at level 36 he drops some good stuff.

(On my second run, I installed a mod that lets me take equipment off ANY foes I kill.)

Be careful with the chameleon based gear, it is completely game breaking and could ruin your enjoyment of the game before long by trivializing everything.

Heh, fighting the Grand Champion was a joke after doing the quest where he wants you to find out the background of his father. Personally, I just wanted to kill him and be grand champ already, but I couldn't deny a soon to be dead man's last wish.

ANYthing you overmaster may "break" enjoyment for you. i don't see it that way . . . i have 200 hours into the game and am WAY LESS than 1/2 done . . . anything that speeds it up is a "+" in my book. i have the ability to pick ANY lock withour breaking a single pick . . . BUT the Skeleton Key speeds it up . . . i wouldn't leave home without it.

And Chameleon Gear is USELESS in fighting multiple enemies . . . say on the planes of Oblivion where you get to fight maybe 5 or six enemies at once . . . you can't attack one-at-a-time as they Mob you - imo, chameleon is best for Sneak, Thief and Assasin Quests.

ANyway, i am Expert in Blade and Good at Destruction, so like my mele skills just as well as Sneak.

I had 103% Chameleon and it was basically running around with a notarget cheat turned on. I attacked several Imperial Palace Guards and they went into fleeing mode. Nothing ever attacked me. I blew through the final Thieves Guild quest using it and decided that I don't want it anymore.

try your Chameleon Gear on the Planes of Oblivion and see how long you last.

imo, it is only really good for that sneak attack on single powwerful or on one-at-a-time enemies . . .
[then is is a 'breaker']
anyway they run and you have to chase them

my Blade/mele is So High, i made a pile of guards - who attacked me simultaneously] so BIG i couldn't loot half of the bodies . . . but is is still no 'breaker' on the planes of oblivion where i face Huge and Powerful and Multiple Magic and Mele Enemies.

the game is very well-balanced

what blows my mind . . . after 200 hours of play . . . i am STILL not halfway.

Chameleon gear makes sneaking easy below 100% but if you get to 100% or break 100% with gear + spells, you will break combat. Not just easy, broken (monsters will stop attacking you completely). Was just a warning, I'd hate for you to completely ruin the game for yourself after putting so many hours into it.

Just started playing tonight and I am hooked. This game is unbelieveable. I have never been much of an RPG fan (FF mostly) but this game has it all.

Anyone out there using a single 6800GT? If so, what are you framerates like? I get about 25-30FPS outdoors... Does that sound about right?

This game is going to force an upgrade...

For outdoors you are doing very well. Its still playable. How about when you get near an Oblivion gate?

For the love of Saint Olga, DO NOT upgrade until you read the Oblivion article on the front page of Anandtech.

I have a A64 3500+ and a single 6800GT that is stock. I get decent framerates outdoors but I found one place the other day that will bring your card to its knees. I think it was near the gold coast, I'll have to look at my map but my FPS went down to 8 - 10 when they're normally in the upper 20's.

I really want to upgrade my mobo and VC as well but I'm going to wait until AM2 and Conroe are out. At that point a x1900xt or 7900GTX should cheaper.

X i doubt it . . .

. blow away windbag. . .

. i won't fight you . . .

. you do me too much honor.

i have made 100% Chamelion [75% gear + 25% spells] and don't get what you describe . . . except with a single enemy at a time [and they run like hell if you don't kill 'em right away - damned annoying]. i still get "mobbed" by a group, especially in Oblivion Planes . . . what level are you?

i am only Level 17 [even though i have 215 hours into the game]

and even if what you describe [ever] happens, i simply will put it away except for the toughest fights
[i don't mind keeping a "legal cheat" handy]

but thanks for the 'warning'

Who is Saint Olga, and why do I want her love? I will read the article anyways.

I have a 7800GT and outdoors bring my framerates down into the 20's.. lower near Oblivion gates. Of course I am running at 1900x1620 to match my LCD.

I have a 7800GT and I disable grass with "TG". I didn't at first, but after awhile I realized I actually liked the world the way it looks without grass (at least until you can have a video card that can do grass to the horizon). Plus without grass I get awesome FPS even outdoors.

I've been bringing the resolution down and that seems to help quite a bit. I always want to run at my Dell's 24" native resolution.. but Oblivion is just a little too rough on my single 7800GT. I can play BF2 cranked up just fine.

Thats exactly what I noticed with my 7800GT.
Grass is unimpressive (compared to FarCry) and kills performance.
Not to mention you can lose goodies. Those swords look real cool when they fly up and twinkle in the light, but finding them on the ground is a pain.

EDIT: I didnt use a tweaker though. If you slide it all the way left, grass dissapears totally.

you are absolutely right!

115% Chameleon completely *breaks* the game.

i was wrong
[i did have 100% but that included spells . . . somehow not as effective - multiple enemies would 'find' me]

i can RUN thru ANYplace [with Expert fortified Sneak] carrying a torch right up to my completely UNaware opponent's face - due to 115% Chameleon - and do a Sneak Attack and Follow-up that hasn't failed yet . . . including Lichs and many multiple opponents!
. . . they are completely unaware anything is happening to their 'comrades'
:Q

it is just like a 'walkthru' with zero resistance whatsoever
[and probably needs a patch to address it]

doesn't bother me a bit . . . it's like watching a movie now with a Superhero taking charge and kicking butt.

i'm Level 17 and have Transcendent Sigil Stones [not that i need anything, but just in case anything changes].

It's what you pull out of the top of a sigil tower to shut down an Oblivion gate. Are there "lesser" types of sigil stones you get from shutting gates down when you're low in level? I've only gotten the Transcendent ones, but I was already high level when I started the main quest.

They're just called "Sigil Stones".
I can only assume you visited your first gate after doing lots of other things first and dont even know about them.

The basic ones can be used on weapons and armor to give them mild magic abilities. Usually with per use charges.
