I have an X1600 pro and the problem I'm having is only when using bloom. I am using HDR and it looks amazing a little laggy but Bloom for some reason screws up. I enter a doorway and after it loads I just see the door. I see the compass showing I'm moving but there is that single frame. Then I press esc and I see what I was supposed to be looking at or where I was... I also see sometimes that a persons right eye my left their right eye dissapears and gets replaced by triangles sometimes heh.

the crashing to desktop is being reported all over the place.. the game dosnt seem to be able to do a simple thing like load data reliably.. it happens to some folks and dosnt happen to others.. i have two similar machine and it does exactly the same thing on both.. one is only a week old the other four months.. both high end machines..

any kind of data loading situtation.. sometimes results in instant desktop.. opening doors.. after sleep.. loading a save game.. just walking thru the country.. there is also a swordfight situation mosltly a single aninmal or such that does the desktop thing.. i assume that is connected to data loading as well..

i have probably spent as much time trying to figure the crash thing as i have playing the game.. my end conclusion is its just buggy unstable game and needs a patch.. so far there dosnt seem to be any signs of such a thing..

trog

ps.. i have just read a review on a super expensive quad sli machine.. they ran the usual game tests.. they couldnt report the machines oblivion performance cos ithe game crashed after five seconds of walking thru the country.. he he he

to quote "benchmarking Oblivion was not possible at this time, because the Quad-SLI system kept crashing after about five seconds of walking in the game"

its worth noteing no other game caused problems.. only oblivion..

Funny, I never asked the game to use the gamepad!

Yeah you have to diasble it in the ini file (or unplug the device) or you'll get weird crap like that every now and then.

ok, now i cant even load a game. it locks after i click "yes, i want to load" i am going to backup my saves and reinstall. i mean, its a great game and all, but they shouldnt have released it in this condition... its just unbelievable. also, one of my friends was experiencing these kinds of things when he first started playing, and then they went away. for me, its the opposite. i had no problems until recently and its gotten worse and worse. man....

Man, this patch is great! My performance is a lot more consistent now and self shadows finally work! I can ALMOST turn on grass shadows, but I don't notice any graphical difference yet I can definitely notice the performance hit.

Too bad I finished Oblivion,to be honest I have just restarted Morrowind again (this time with both expansions)and I like it more then Oblivion.

The Oblivion official patch should not be too long ,depending how many bugs or problems they find with the beta patch.

I'll probably give the patch a try tonight. I'm probably not a good 'tester' though. I'm about 22 hours in and have only had 1 hard freeze where the sound looped.

after one re-install of oblivion cos the patch kept telling it couldnt find the old files.. a warning of a long time doing its business due to the large amount of files that needed altering the patch whizzed along and in about 30 seconds did its job..

but.. after five minutes of gameplay and my first attempt to move to a new location its instant desktop time.. he he he

sooo from my point of vew the patch is utterly useless.. at least it didnt take me long to find out.. less than five minutes.. he he he

This isn't a solution, but it's worked for me: If you are only locking up trying to load just after starting the game, try starting a new game, and then load. I'm doing this EVERY freaking time now, hasn't failed me yet, but boy is it annoying. Fix this POS already; I just used Driver Cleaner to weed out my old ATI left overs from system files (wish I also did .cab), but haven't had to heart to check if it makes a difference or not.

I have a similiar issue - if I start an entirely new game and then load my saved games they work fine though. Have you tried this?

Game crashes when exiting, and it crashes when you switch between desktop and game. Also I have a problem where I can clearly hear the music, but all other sounds are at extremely low volume. The only way to increase the volume of other sounds is by increasing the Music volume. The master volume and the music volume slider is the only ones who have any effect, the other does not affect anything.
I have removed the oblivion.ini to allow the game to reset its settings, but that does not help. Neither does a reinstall of the game.

You could see if it's your sound card or drivers by using onboard audio instead.

hehe... i like how you don't go back and fix it... lazy bum!

I wonder if someone could make a plugin for firefox that finds large blocks of capital letter text and display them as lower case...

(A Beta patch, but hey, it's something.)

English Language Patch

Release Notes (scroll down a ways)

I don't get very many crashes, actually none since I turned off MBM. I'm waiting for the final.

i see it worked for someone else

now, HW doc is OFF during ALL games . . . evidently it disrupts the game when it monitors and maybe reports minor fluctuations in voltage.

Anyone have serious problems with the patch? i have some Quests that cannot be finished because of 'bugs'.

[nearly 300 hours into the game . . . 37 gates shut . . . Couple of Master Skills in Blade and Sneak and was able to cut Chameleon down to 80% to give my enemies a "fighting chance".

BTW, do NOT get the Orrey Plug in . . .

otoh, the Wizard's Tower is pretty cool

Just started Oblivion with my new eVGA 7900GT and I love it. I have been running around just taking it all in but have a couple of questions I was hoping to get help with...

Just for background, my specs... A64 3500+ Winchester, 2GB Corsair XMS, Dell 2405FPW, Audigy2, eVGA 7900GT (everything is stock)

1. I noticed sometimes when I am running around there is a brief 200-500ms "jerk." The framerates don't drop but the game just stutters ever so briefly. Any ideas? Am I processor bound?

2. To the folks with eVGA cards... Do you use the eVGA driver or the nVidia driver? The eVGA driver seems to be one release ahead of the nVidia driver.

3. When talking to someone and trying to convince them of something (the 4 section circle thing). Do you have to select all 4 sections (boast, joke, etc.) before you are done? What is the point in picking a section that visibly angers the person you are talking to?

Thanks...

I have the same exact thing. The FPS stays constant but there is a visible jerkiness. No idea what it is.

What game settings are both of you using? At high settings, there's a lot of vram usage to load all of the textures (especially if you're using any of the LOD mods). 512mb ram cards even have a hard time keeping up. With all of the LOD mods and ini tweaks, at 1600x1200 with HDR, 2xAA, 16xHQAF, my x1900xtx fills up 500megs according to the "tdt" command in the console (here).

I would guess that this could be a major cause of the hitching. I'll need to test more. So far, I've eliminated resolution scaling as a culprit, since lowering all the way down to 640 didn't get rid of it. A quick run through the forest on the settings above:

resolution.....min....max....avg
640x480.......11.....50.......27
800x600.......11.....43.......27
1024x768.....11.....44.......26
1280x960.....11.....35.......22
1600x1200...11.....24.......18
2048x1536....3......15........9

I'm assuming that going from Large textures down to Medium or Small might see a reduction in the stuttering. I doubt I'd want to play at anything but Large, but I will probably test out these other settings to see if my assumption is correct.

Thanks...

You eventually have to select all 4 "pie slices." They rotate each time you make a selection, so you have to optimize your selections. Find out which section makes the person happiest and which makes them angry and plan ahead so that the appropriate slices land in those sections.

Also, in regards to the patch, I got a crash on game exit last night. I guess it doesn't fix the issue, but I can almost swear that the performance is a lot more consistent for me now.

I am using large textures as well. I will try using medium to see if that helps. Thanks for the hint.

Ok, I tried a ton of combinations of resolutions and texture sizes and the game still jerks occasionally. So that tells me it isn't the GPU... I will have to take a look at CPU load next.

The game looks beautiful and the jerkiness isn't much of a bother...
