it could be accessing the HD if it is a little longer than that or could be dumping some memory as it seems to do it just before loading an area . . .

and as to the "character thing" . . . just quickly click on the SMALLest slice on each quarter . . . and note the disposition change . . . it's a quick way to find out what they like without losing time or disposition.

Another noob question... I somewhat understand the leveling aspect of the game but is there any way to tell how many skill (major/minor) points you have accumulated since the last level? I want to make sure I have 10+ points in the attribute categories I care about before I level.

Why would I? it worked with the sound card before. Nothing has changed in the setup. There are many users on the oblivion forum reporting troubles with speech etc. disappearing. So there probably is something wrong with Oblivion itself.

well, i installed the beta patch, but the game is still locking up when i try to load. almost every time now.

i dont have the slightest problem with how the game plays but this inability to do a simple thing like load data has pissed me off big time.. i just tried playing the thing for half an hour.. four crashes to the desktop evey time i slash at some animal in the countryside..

they must know about the problem.. i have two similar high end machines both can play any game u throw at em without a hitch.. but oblivion keeps crashing on a regular basis on both of them.. the patch hasnt made the slightest noticable difference..

i dont think the problem is gonna get fixed and as such think the game is a buggy peice of cr-p that should never have been released in the first place..

it can go in the bin where it belongs... and i can go back to playing games written by folks who know what they are doing.. he he he

I know that APoppin has repeated this a billion times already, but do you have any sort of motherboard monitoring software running? It seems to help a lot of people to turn it off.

are we talking bios stuff here.. windows monitoring or what.. i have tried a million things in my attemps to figure out the problem.. including turning everything off i can think of off..

even a brand new machine with a virgin windows install.. but when clutching at straws.. there is always the odd one u miss.. so what exactly is meant by any motherboard monitoring.. ????

i have pretty much given up with the game but just for my own curiosity if i know exactly what else i am supposed to turm off i will give it a go..

nothing i have tried makes the slightest difference.. even if i could make it worse at least i would know i was on the right track.. he he

having messed with windows PCs for a number of years.. i know an unstable system when i see one.. oblivion makes both my systems behave just like unstable ones.. when u know it isnt the hardware thats unstable it has to be the software.. not being able to tolerate all sorts of normal things running is a sign of unstable software..

but even being super kind to it and turning any possible thing off it might not like.. the buggy piece of junk still isnt satble.. he he he

and end users shouldnt have to piss about trying to make a game run.. it just should.. if the machine its is on is up to spec that should be all thats needed..

its the two machine factor that annoys me.. with just the one machine it could always be some flook.. but when it happens exactly the same on two machines.. it has to be a known problem and bethesda must be fully aware if it..

they monitor most PCs for voltage fluctuations and are usually installed off the MB install disk . . .

make SURE it is DIS-abled . . . or UNinstalled

i can turn mine back on and Oblivion will regularly and randomly crash . .. with or without the Beta Patch [evidently the Beta patch mostly fixes some broken Quests] . . . turn it off and it becomes stable for HOURS of play

don't worry about monitoring at the BIOS level

i have an abit ax8 mobo.. there is something called abit EQ which monitors temps fans speeds and voltages.. there is also an abit guru chip on the mobo which might be a winbond chip and i think controls all this stuff.. the EQ thing is something u adjust or set in windows but i think it alters things at bios level.. i have mine set but not actually running in windows..

but i just unticked all the monitor options and shut the EQ down.. this is about as switched off as i can get without removing the guru chip from the mobo.. he he

oblivion keeps crashing away exactly like before.. but both the machines oblvion is unstable on do have exactly the same abit ax8 mobo..

but if this is the case.. oblvion wont run properly on abit ax8 mobos it should be a known issue and reported.. they have been around for some time and lots of folks must be useing them..

but in my case switching off all my mobo warnings hasnt altered things at all..

ps.. i dont see how it can but that patch seem to have increased my frame rates noticably.. i am running a widsceen resolution of 1200 x 800.. 4 x AA with all the slider bars fully over to the right.. everything on with bloom lighting and bouncing around in the middle of a grassy forest i am seeing frame rates over 40 with the odd drop to 32 or so..

damned sure i couldnt do this before.. ???

I have an occasional CTD problem on area loading (which is improved with the patch) and I use MBM... one funny thing I notice about Oblivion + MBM is that if I have the MBM Dashboard open when I launch the game, it causes graphics corruption in the game in the lower right corner of the screen where the dashboard is - it's like the dashboard tiles are trying to display themselves in the game. Weird. Of course, the problem goes away if I kill the dashboard.

for some reason my thieves guild quest is all messed up... it jumped way ahead, and i did a couple of quests, then did the ring quest, not realizing it was an earlier thieves guild quest... i got up to the quest right before the one it jumped to, but the master forger was never home (i tried many many times at many different points). Now i'm right before the quest with the boots (2 before the end, i believe), but nobody from the thieves guild ever contacts me. Is there a way to edit my savegame or something so that it marks the forgery quest as complete (just so i can get it off my list - so annoying!) and someway to get the next quest (i had a similar problem with the quest that what's his face... lizard guy from the beginning ... is supposed to summon you for, so i just went and found him and it worked.

Anyone know who finds you for the boots quest and where i could find him? I'm hoping that if i talk to him he'll tell me about it.

(btw, sorry for the disjointed bit... i'm running on no sleep and paint, glue and super77 fumes)

i am playing silly buggers now.. load seriouse sam alt tab to windows.. load oblivion.. alt tab to serious.. alt tab back to oblivion.. do this few times to see what happens.. basically nothing both games appear just as they should.. play obvlivion.. it plays okay apart from some swopfileing during load areas.. after a while it did lts own equivalent of alt tab during an area load leaving good old seriouse still happily playing away..

at least playing another game at the same time dosnt seem to make it any more unstable than playing it on its own... he he he

okay just the one more silly ah heck test.. load painkiller alt tab back to the desktop.. load oblivion.. drop the textures from high to medium so as both games fit in my 2 gigs of system memory..

alt tab back and forth a few times play each game a bit.. oblivion failed the alt tab test perhaps one time in six but a simply reload got it going again..

played oblivion trying very hard to make it crash.. doing all the wrong things.. moving locations repeatedly.. staying in the country side.. loading a few save games.. slashing a few aninmals.. all the things i know are likely to produce the bomb out to desktop syndrome.. all with painkiller playing in the background..

after half an hour i gave up.. no crashes.. he he he

praps i have discovered a new answer.. play two bloody games at once.. he he he

JW but whenever I see an oblivion gate well not even see it whenever it appears on the compass I getlike 1-2fps >.< with an X1600 pro. I know it's not that great of a card but I bought it just to run oblivion. I'm running it with no bloom or HDR. 2xaa at 1024x768. It runs perfectly fine and well in the cities and even with grass turned all the way on it's fine I can play perfectly. It runs fine 1024x768 HDR with many things high. I'm not to annoyed by fps I guess I'm used to it but around oblivion gates... ugh well anything I can do? JW does anybody else get this problem? Most review sites show the X1600 pro doing decent atleast. I have already oc'd the core by 85mhz and the memory by 20/40...

Hmm. How does that card square off with a 7800GT? I hear the Gates are bad, but for me, they're smooth enough to play without paying much mind, and probably better than really grassy areas. I use hdr, no aa of course. If the x1600 is supposed to fair better, maybe the problem is in settings or somethin'.

drzdo.. it aint just the gate its the meanies that appear at the same time.. 1024 x 764 and things on high plus AA is quite a high setting for your card i think low fps while being mobbed by the imp things would be normal.. u could try turning things down.. thats about all..

pretty screwed up problem here with the beta patch.

i installed the patch, and it worked fine right after i installed it. but, the next day, when i started up my computer and played, the patch had uninstalled itself, and the version number in the bottom left corner of the main menu was back to 1.0.228. so, i exited the game and just ran the patch program again. it said it installed correctly, so i went into the game, and now where the version number was it just says "Version". it also appears that the patch is not installed because my stats went back to how they were before the patch. (my blade skill is 52 but i am still an apprentice, because i got a gift from the dark brotherhood.) so, i think i am going to uninstall the game and try the patch again. this is just really weird.

he's running a P4 3.0Ghz, 2.5Gb RAM, Nvidia 6800GS

he loaded Oblivion last night. it kept crashing on him in full screen mode.

he backed out and switched to "window" mode and it's working fine.

any idea what could be the cause?

Have him update drivers, patch Oblivion, turn off background apps, etc.

I'm doing the Thieves Guild quests right now and I have a problem with the "Taking Care Of Lex" quest.

The "stranger" who forges my letter tells me to come back in 24 hrs. I've tried 24 hours, 48 hrs and more and he keeps telling me he's busy. Any way to trigger the event so he'll give me the letter?
