Wal-Mart accuses ex-senator of cutting in line for PS3

AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Thursday that a staff member for former Sen. John Edwards -- a vocal critic of the retailer -- asked his local Wal-Mart store for help in getting the potential 2008 presidential candidate a Sony PlayStation 3. Edwards said a volunteer did so by mistake.

Edwards said that the volunteer "feels terrible" about seeking the game unit at Wal-Mart a day after his boss criticized the company, saying it doesn't treat its employees fairly.

"My wife, Elizabeth, wanted to get a PlayStation 3 for my young children. She mentioned it in front of one of my staff people," Edwards said. "That staff person mentioned it in front of a volunteer who said he would make an effort to get one. He was making an effort to go get one for himself. (Watch a stampede erupt at a PS3 release in Wisconsin -- 1:05 )

"Elizabeth and I knew nothing about this. He feels terrible about this. He made a mistake, and he knows he should not have used my name," Edwards said.

Edwards said the volunteer was "a young kid" unaware of what he called flawed Wal-Mart policies. He called the Wal-Mart statement an effort to divert attention from its own problems.

After Wal-Mart this summer hired Edelman executive Leslie Dach as its public relations director and put him on the company's executive team, analysts said the retailer would likely become more aggressive toward its critics.

Wal-Mart had noted in a news release Thursday that on the same day Edwards was criticizing the company in a conference call with union-backed activists, the volunteer staff member had asked a Raleigh, North Carolina, electronics department manager to obtain a PS3 for the ex-senator's family.

From Wal-Mart headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, company spokesman David Tovar said the person who called left a voicemail at the Raleigh store and identified himself as an Edwards staff member. When the manager returned the call, the staff member again identified himself as working for Edwards, and Wal-Mart said it confirmed that with Edwards' office.

The retailer's news release accused Edwards of not wanting to wait his turn.

"While the rest of America's working families are waiting patiently in line, Senator Edwards wants to cut to the front," the Wal-Mart statement said. (See how gamers across the country waited)

The PlayStation 3 console is set to go on sale Friday.

Edwards, the Democrats' vice presidential candidate in 2004, spoke Wednesday to supporters of union-backed WakeUpWalMart.com on a conference call launching the group's holiday season campaign to pressure Wal-Mart for better labor standards.

In the call, he repeated a story about his son Jack disapproving of a classmate buying sneakers at Wal-Mart. "If a 6-year-old can figure it out, America can definitely figure this out," Edwards said.

Shootings over a game console?

HARTFORD, Conn. - Two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people waiting for the new Playstation 3 game system to go on sale early Friday and shot a man who refused to give up his money, authorities said.

In other states, customers pushed and shoved their way to the shelves to get at the limited supply, and in Kentucky, four people were grazed by BBs fired from a passing vehicle as they waited for a Best Buy store to open.

Is this really worth it? "Being the first on the block"

lol

I think the crime wave due to these things is even more entertaining that playing the current games. Apparently, it's not even violent video games we need to worry about, it's the consoles themselves.

So as of right now we've got:

4 People shot with BBs, including the news reporter. Her reaction, and I quote "OWWWW...THAT REALLY HURT!! "

1 Person shot for real, in critical condition.

1 good old fashioned stickup, at least no one actually got shot.

Several brawls. 1 face confirmed planted into a telephone pole.

At least one reported car broken into, and he didnt even actually have a ps3.

Several armed robberies.

1 genuine fugitive rapist, caught on a line to play video games.

Several bona fide riots. I have to say I'm a tad bit dissapointed it was just pepper spray, and not full out tear gas.

1 17th century style, land grab type of race to the door...from 10 feet away.

1 pregnant woman, having contractions. Now thats what I call parenting. Did she actually give birth...or get a PS3?

A few shots busted in the air, or they just had really, really bad aim.

Rumors of a few stabbings.

And a political scandal to top it all off.

They then turned around and sold only 2 units.

How many PS3 are you getting?

Yeah and it's not even being the first on the block to have it...

It's being the first one to sell it

Yep.

Note though that when I say "I've got two, my wife has two, my aunt has two, and my mother-in-law has one", I mean that. I get the money from my two, my wife gets the money from her two, my aunt gets the money from her two, and my mother-in-law gets the money from her one. All of us made the individual effort to get our respective number of systems for ourselves so we'll get the money from each of our systems.

You think PS3s come off the fedex truck by themselves? I can guarantee she doesn't know how many came off the truck. While 6 Sony boxes might have, there is no way to know for sure how many PS3s were in there.

That's 6 of the 7 units. My aunt picked her pre-order up from EB a couple of hours ago and hasn't brought it over here yet so that we can list it for her.

Up your nose with a rubber hose.

I didn't get 7. I got two. My mother-in-law got 1 and the people in her line saw 6 boxes of the same type that the PS3 came in go into the Sam's but only two were sold. One guy was in the store and saw them carry four of the same type of boxes to some offices.
