I concur. The target render had no huds and barely showed real gameplay camera angles, it was obviously rendered and not gameplay. Only people who would be fooled are those who know nothing about video games, and that goes for the entire target render vs gameplay arguement.

I downloaded the demo last night and its pretty fun. Only bad thing I found so far is that the race course is hard to define the first time around, so its easy to crash. But one go around and you begin to really be able to work the course and jumps. Should turn out to be a nice little game.

Linux on the PS3 allowing Blu-Ray movies to be ripped

December 1, 2006 - As soon as we installed Linux on our office PS3, it was clear that trouble would be brewing quickly. We began taking bets on how soon someone would hack the PS3. While we haven't heard of anyone truly cracking the PS3 software yet, thanks to Linux, Blu-Ray movies are now being ripped onto the PS3 hard drive.

Multiple sites, including PVRWire, are reporting on gamers illegally copying movies to the PS3 hard drive. Once the large file is on the hard drive, it's possible that someone could figure out a way to burn them.

It only took a few days, but already the Linux PS3 has enabled piracy. As the months continue, users are certain to find other ways to exploit Sony's new console. The fault lies with those committing the crime as the majority of those who download Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 are likely doing so legitimately.

"lol, IGN." The details are overwhelming. Copying the files to the PS3's HDD means nothing if they're still DRMed - similar to a CSS encoded VOB being worth squat.

No stripped .VC1 no care

Edit - Also, good job for criminalizing fair use, IGN.

Couldn't this be the first step to playing copied BR movies/games similar to how copied 360 games can now be played with a firmware hacked DVD drive? The security of the game files themselves haven't been defeated, but the firmware hack tricks the 360 into thinking it is reading a retail disc when it is actually a burned copy. I wouldn't be surprised if that same avenue is now being explored with the PS3.

there it is! the first PS3 related DEATH!
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/12/04/teen.shot.ap/index.html

Roommate Mike Rhoton said Strickland was unarmed, but may have been holding a video game controller when he went to the door as it was bashed in by officers.

If that was a PS3 wireless controller from the console that the idiot stole, oh the irony... (no wonder 360 and wii controllers are white... black devices get you killed)

this guy didn't deserve to die, but he's not some innocent bystander either. the irony is if he never stole the PS3, even if the cops hit his place, he wouldn't have anything that resembles a weapon in his hand.
sony should make their new batches of playstation 3s in a different color.

now i'm thinking to give my black ipod nano a differnt color skin, i don't want to be holding ion to it and get shot by some trigger happy cop

Holding something that is colored black is hardly a valid excuse for being shot at. Actually I dunno, is it? If it is then its a fvcked up world we live in.

im not saying its justified. but you can't blame scared/trigger happy cops from firing at you when you raise your hand with a black device against the cops who's trying to take you down.

sorry, but its a shoot first ask questions later world we live in.

I almost felt compelled to ask this, but does anyone know if the thief/victim was black? (I may as well take this to P&N NOW) The NYC/Atlanta shootings were made into a racial issue. I wonder if this would be as well.

While the PS3 may run perfectly fine without it, its mainly for peace of mind and longevity of my PS3. The air rising out of the vents felt pretty hot, though the flow of air was pretty good I decided to help it along, and it has definately reduced the temps.

In short, Why not?

Yeah, can't hurt, especially considering they had overheating problems before launch. The PS3 at the Target near me has been frozen on a different screen every time I've gone in there except once in the last few weeks, probably because it's enclosed and the airflow isn't very good.

PS3 Firmware Update 1.3

There is an outstanding 1080i problem on the PlayStation 3. This problem has not been fixed by today's 1.30 firmware update.

What has been fixed: the system has given a higher priority to 1080i signals so, if available, the console will default to 1080i over 720p. This means that if your HDTV supports 720p, and a game's native resolution (like Resistance: Fall of Man) is 720p, it should display fine in that resolution. If the native resolution is 1080p (NBA07, the XMB interface, Blu-ray movies) and your set supports 1080i and 720p, the console will automatically default to 1080i due to the higher preference, regardless of what your preference is. If you disable the 1080i output so everything will play in your preferred 720p, your Blu-ray movies will drop down to 480p. We're not really sure what problem this update was intended to fix or why the resolution hierarchy isn't user selectable.

Luckily, most new HDTVs support both 720p and 1080i making these issues moot for many gamers, but we're hoping (really, it's on our Xmas list) that the eggheads at Sony are working on a holiday-themed upgrade to support downscaling Blu-ray movies to 720p and upscaling some games (like Resistance) to 1080i. Oh, and maybe some of that DVD-upscaling we're hearing about while they're at it.

Also included in the update:

* RGB and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr output selection over HDMI
* A backup utility to get your removable media data -- that's SD, Compact Flash, and Memory Stick -- to the HDD
* HDD formatting option
* Support for a Bluetooth remote control

so what if your set only supports 720p? Will BD movies play in 720p and the interface and 1080p games display in 720p?
i hope they allow user selection in the next update, because if I get a set that supports 720p and 1080i, I might want 720p for the purpose that it may look better than 1080i (that will have to be determined when I get the set and get to play around with both resolutions).

I dont have a HDTV but I have a viewsonic vx2025wm. I bought a dvi female to hdmi male adapter and tried it, but it doesnt work . Is this even possible? Someone please tell me theres a way to get my viewsonic to work with 720p from my PS3. I saw online that they also have component to dvi adapters. Would that work?

what you want is a male HDMI to male DVI adapter. the way you mentioned wouldn't work between the PS3 and a computer. the dvi wouldn't even plug in.

I used a standard dvi cable to connect them. buying just an adapter was cheaper then buying a cable. perhaps that still might be the better way though. but can anyone confirm if this is even possible? i had everything hooked up and choose hdmi output on the ps3, the ps3 did not initialize the hdmi output it just waited 30 seconds and returned to component. my lcd did recognize some sort of signal but i think it was all black.

I did some research and so far I think you need to use an HDCP display. So most desktop monitors are out of the question.

That just leaves component to dvi adapters and then after that the only choice is to drop big bucks on a new display. If if comes to that I will probably hold off until 1080p is available in 26" displays.

edit: can't spell.

Do you not realize that's 90% of the market? People like ourselves that like videogames enough to keep up with new releases and discuss things on the internet are savvy enough to realize differences between renders and real-time, in-game footage. But everyone else out there have no idea, and buy games based on a commercial they saw on TV, or in this case, a kick-ass looking trailer they happened across on the internet.

You make it sound like most all videogame players are halfway intelligent.....I say don't give people too much credit.

Personally, I think companies showing vastly better renders to sell games is a bad way to do business, but since in this case the video was released a year and a half before the game, it's a little different. Now if they were still showing this trailer (or something of the quality) in current commercial to sell it, then there's a bigger problem with this industry.

Good point, really the only people who are trying to fool anyone here are the people running these sites and posting this type of anti-sony content. And like you said 90% of the market is too dumb to know any better.

edit: I d/led and watched the motostorm trailer 2 days ago on my ps3 and all footage in the trailer was game engine footage.
