My local Target got 11 60GB versions this morning, I don't know how widespread that was.

is the black market price on this going to go down any further before xmas or will it go up ...

current ebay price on 60 gb is in the $800 to $850 range... which is almost afordable if you dont have time to camp out at the store for a week.

thursday my local bestbuy got like 20 PS3's, not sure how many of the premiums but all I know is I got one of the 60gb models.
best bet is to simply go to a bestbuy or circuitcity around noon on tuesdays, thursdays, and fridays... that's when the trucks typically arrive and they will put any PS3's they have out then. the truck normally arrives around 11, I should say, and things like the PS3 are put out for sale around 1200-1230. I walked in at 1245 and I think they were recently put out there, judging by how complete the stacks looked.

Does the PS3 work with any old component cables, or do you need to buy some kind of "PS3 component cables"? And connecting by component, can I still play BR movies in 720p?

as far as cables go, you have to have PS2/PS3 cables.. if you have a PS2 then those cables will work because it uses the same connection method on the back of the PS2.

as far as movies.. you can play BD movies in both 720p and 1080i/p iirc, because none of the movie studios are forcing HDCP or the copyright protection code on the discs, so I think component should still allow it for now. that's not guaranteed to last, however.

FYI, old PS1 cables will work as well Sony has kept the A/V connector the same throughout all 3 generations.

The SNES, N64, and Gamecube all shared the same A/V connector as well, but Wii is completely different.

Funny, considering Wii doesn't really output much differently than a GC. It's what, 480p instead of 480i?

Yup, the Wii can output in 480p. Actually, the Gamecube could output in 480p as well if the game supported it (which most of them did).

Can anyone recommend some CPU intensive linux apps that work on fedora6 without much tinkering? Hopefully something useful as well and not a benchmarking program. The only thing I can think of is divx/xvid encoding.

well there will be a problem since memory is limited (linux can only see 256mb, and due to overhead only actually gets 196mb). so encoding will be hurt quite a bit by that.

couple questions:

1)Is there a consensus on whether the PS3 has better graphics or the Xbox 360? No fights...just curious as i havent followed it at all.

2)would it be worth buying a ps3 if i could find one and selling it before/during xmas? would there be a decent profit or arent they in high demand any more?

1. 360 has won every graphical comparison I've read. Usually due to better lighting and sometimes clearer textures. Its not a night and day difference, usually just a little something that the 360 version offers over the PS3 version. The general consensus is that the PS3 will get better once the devs get a chance to optimize thier code for it.

2. You missed the boat. You can still make a few bucks but depending on how much time you have to invest, it might not be worth it anymore. Its definitely not as profitable.

The graphics comparison, they claim are not entirely fair yet. My better comparison would be when the next group of the same series is released.

not even then. I'd say about the time the major games come out, like MGS4, UT2007, Army of Two... before you start deciding on which console can do the same game prettier, if at all. The major one will be Army of Two.. on both X360 and PS3, and use the UE3 engine.. so that should provide easy distinguishment between system performance. Which system is better, period.. will take longer, give it a year.. it's not clear-cut this time since both are so close... it will take a little longer.

PS3 has already caught up with Xbox360 sales in Japan rofl.

And this is surprising because........?

Not really surprising, the 360 games are really americanized and nothing like what japanese developers put out. Japanese gamers definitely would have a hard time adopting the 360 but still, I didnt know the 360 only sold 180k units in japan so far, thats like... nothing.

It wasn't until this past week that the 360 finally had a Japanese system seller (Blue Dragon). It sold extremely well but nothing to make up for the demand for the PS3.
