Ouch. Wonder how long it'd take to get a replacement...

Well, now I've got picture and all, but it won't output to HDMI. It tries and my TV says it's receiving a 480p signal on the HDMI input, but doesn't display anything. Not sure if the issue is with my TV or with the PS3. I might try replacing my TV to see if it works.

not long. i'm also on the PlayStation.com forums and the users there are reporting 3-5 day turnaround times, typically receiving a brand new console to boot.

So, I snagged a 20gb PS3 from GameStop the otherday. I picked up Resistance, and CoD3. Now I just need to get this fat bastard networked right and it'll be web surfin ahoy.

Worth the 500 or 600 dollar entry price probably not... Generic FPS not even. The story mode is great. But where this game really shines is online. 20 on 20 TDM and 40 man DM equals mayhem. I love it!

Meh. I like lower amounts of players, so it actually takes some skill.

Agreed I'm a bigger fan of 8 to 16 player deathmatch games...16 is even pushing it. Its the same when I play paintball...if there is a mob of people skill tends to play a smaller part...just like in real life.

I don't agree completely but to each his own. There are smaller games to join. You don't have to join a 40 man, but you can if you want to. You can create your own games and limit the size of them and choose which guns are available and other game options and stuff like that.

Don't get me wrong...I've had my fun with Battlefield type games...but I tend to get tired of them very quickly whereas games with more focused multiplayer tend to keep my interest a lot longer. You are right though...to each their own. I did not mean to imply that larger games required no skill...just that larger games tend to even out individual skills to some degree (team skills is a different matter).

yah and the problem with that, is that if the game can support 20v20, then maps are typically going to be huge and geared towards 20v20. halo 2 kind of got it right - some maps are small, and some are huge. i don't know if thats how it is in resistance, but if it is, then that saves some stuff.

but in bf2 ... you can't even play that game 4v4 because it'll just be a big game of "where the hell is everyone". that's why I'm glad that bungie said halo 3 will have at MAX 16 people in one game. some people think more = better, but i disagree. 4v4 is perfect to me.

but yes, to each their own

I will check for small maps tonight when I get home. What I want to know is if they will add more maps or content later. Resistance really has the feel of a PC game, there are a lot of options and potential. I wonder if there will be any mod or map support. If not then I hope at least future games take it to that level. Since every ps3 is guaranteed to have a hard drive and connectivity between PC and the net is there, I think its a good possibility. All thats missing is the ability to actually use the keyboard and mouse instead of the controller. I mean I can plug it in and the PS3 recognizes it, its so close to working I can taste it.

Only small maps I can think of right off the top of my head are Bus Yard and Nottingham(small). Anyone else with the game think Manchester 40 player map is just too big? Sometimes it takes me forever to find anyone.

I played PS3 for the first time last night. Friend brought over his system + Resistance. We played 3 player on a map that said it was an 8 player map, and the size was quite good...

If I installed Fedora or YDL and hooked up a USB hard drive, would I be able to access it and play Divx videos?

you'd need to get a player working on it, but yes its possible. if your not linux literate it could be difficult though. you can also play video direct over the network if you want, which is what im planning to do.

I haven't used Linux much, but it looks like VLC runs on Fedora Core 4. Wonder if it would install on 5.

just gave it a spin @ wal-mart

motorstorm (is this right?) looked amazing and was hella fun, but it takes foreveeeeeer to load sh!t, everything even starting the game. looks pretty sweet though, must say I was slightly doubtful about how good it would be, makes it that much harder to decide between a 360 wii or ps3. I probably wont get a ps3 because the loading really killed it .

They're all disc based systems, so load times are something you have to deal with. They don't have the instant bandwidth that cartridges do.

Also, I think the Wii is more of a complimentary system than a replacement for either a PS3 or a 360.

I dunno, my xbox isn't anywhere near as bad, and from what I see on the 360 it wasn't as bad either.

I also believe it may have been a demo on the HD unless they use a demo disc, because NBA 2k7 was there also. I'm not a ps3 expert though, and it seemed like loading time was up to 30+ seconds.

30 second load times for NBA2k7? I also played that the other night on my friend's system and there were NO load times from picking teams to getting into the stadium. Quite impressive

Unlike Nintendo's $5 (or 500 Wii Points) Christmas treats and more like their free Wii web browser, Sony's poised to really spread that holiday cheer with a holiday freebie. As promised, Gran Turismo HD -- recently re-imagined as a technology demo and not a full title -- will hit the PlayStation Store on December 24th (that's Christmas Eve) for the eminently reasonable price of $0 (or 0 Wii Points). Today, they've announced that offer applies to North America as well as Japan. Thanks, Sony!

The important info: one track (the Eiger Nordwand course), two game modes ("Time Trial" and "Drift Trial"), ten cars (with 10 additional "tuned" variations unlockable), and the much vaunted 1080p. Of course, the only online action you're going to be getting is downloading the game from the PlayStation Store. Like Kaz said, "For the genuine implementation of 'Online Car Life Simulation', please wait for Gran Turismo 5."

Well, I ended up with a surprise PS3 from the in-laws for Christmas. Overall I'm more impressed than I thought I would be. The system itself is big, but it looks nice and it definitely packed with features. I had doubts about how the PSP-style dashboard would work, but I think it works great. The 360 dash now looks cluttered in comparison... although I do find navigation through the Live Marketplace to be easier than through the Playstation Store.

They got me Resistance to go with it. Graphically, Gear of War is considerably better, but RFoM is no slouch graphically. I'm enjoying the game so far and that's what counts.

But I do have a couple of gripes. First, is there any option to disable the autoplay feature when powering on the console? In other words, if there is a game in the BR drive I don't want it to be started automatically when I turn on the console. The 360 was like this when it launched, but they later added an option to disable autoplay.

I have also had some trouble with the controllers. I had read there were issues with the bluetooth controllers having sync issues and sure enough they do. I'll be playing a game and suddenly I'll lose control for maybe 3 seconds and then the controller will start working again. Most of the time it's no big deal. but sometimes it really messes up a game. For example, I was playing Blast Factor and I lost control just as a ring up enemies was materializing in a circle around me. The enemies then flew toward me and killed me before the controller re-synced. That really sucked... I was having a good game too. I hope that's something they can fix via with a software update, if it's something they quietly fix later on through a hardware revision I'll be pissed.

I also have a question... I know some of you have installed Linux on your machines, but the manuals that came with the system didn't really say much about this feature. I found the "Install Other OS" option in the menu, but it simply says you have to go the formatting utility and create a partition for the new OS.

So what happens when you do this? Do you still have the original PS3 dash? We have already downloaded a couple of games from the Playstation Store, so what happens to those?

Thanks!
