got my copy a couple nights ago. very fun game, but i havent played much of it yet. i have to say it's definitely made for a widescreen progressive scan tv. i played 4 player MP on a friend's 4:3 standard def tv, using composite cables, and it was hard to see sometimes with all the details. brought it home to my 42" lcd widescreen, with component cables and its so much better. i like how they fade out the character icon when someone is behind it during fights...that got annoying in melee.

i loved smash 64 when it came out, then i liked melee so much better. melee just felt infinitely more responsive. i was satisfied with some of the tweaks they made from 64 -> melee, like throws.

Nooooo...they changed pits voice from the JPN version! Its like he went through puberty before appearing in the US version....so no more "didididididi!!" but more "yayayayayaya!". Now you can only abuse people on screen with his forward special instead of aurally abusing everyone in the room as well.

I can say that the fears of brawl not being able to be competitive can be put to rest. It will definitely have it's own array of techniques to discover and use at high level play. Just watching my friend from WA who has had the game for about a month (Japanese import) do stuff with Snake is unreal. No video on the internet shows some of the BS he pulls off in matches. I have still played way too little of the game to really say if it is better than Melee or not.(Over 25 hours now) The problem with this is bias. Brawl is the best game ever and I am majorly biased for it being the best game ever. I need to wait more until the new factor wears off for me to give a more accurate comparison.

My Wii is at home, but can't you still set the game to JPN like Melee? AFAIK, both region's games were identical, except the Japanese release was preset to Japanese, US/UK were preset to English. Changing it in Melee used to turn Jigglypuff into Purin (and change the voice), Bowser into Koopa, Peach into Princess Toadstool, etc.

THEY CHANGED FOX'S VOICE! HE SOUNDS WHITE AS FUCK NOW :| No more annoying exaggerated screams when you use up-B or any of his kicks And they took Pikachu's birthday hat out

Wario is the shit. That motorcycle is awesome, and also extremely cheap. Plus, eating a whole bunch of the motorcycles or just other items is great for charging up his stupid super fart down B move. Makes for a great surprise kill

Perhaps you can clarify the difference between sounding "white as fuck" vs. "white?"

Anyone else think the controls aren't tight enough in the SSB series? I like the game, but if it played like MVC2, this would be the best game of all-time.

well, i havent played it that much yet, so im not too sure...logged maybe 6-8 hours total spread across subspace emissary, classic mode and maybe half of it in MP. its definitely fun, and there isnt anything i really dislike about brawl. its a different feel...maybe it seems a little slower than melee, but it could just be the veteran characters ive been playing (samus/fox). i have yet to try any of the wiimote controller combinations, i may give that a try tonight.

Alright I changed the topic title to be "Official SSBB Thread" and added the Metacritic rating for the game of 96 / 100.

No. I played with friends, and it was still laggy as shit.

I played a couple random brawls earlier and it worked fine.

Also did a friend match 1v1 and tat worked pretty well too considering how far away he is.

Hopefully Nintendo will finally realize that online multiplayer is a little more popular than they'd like to believe. Their method for playing games online is pretty sad for this day and age.

Once you were connected, was there a noticeable delay between when you pressed the button and when the attack came out?

I've tried to play about 10 games online, but only have been able to connect to one (I kept getting disconnected). When I was connected, there was little to no lag though.

Me and a friend can play together without a hitch. No lag or anything. TBH I have no desire to play against random people.

I've never played smash brothers before. Is there a consensus as to which control method is the best? The gamecube/wavebird controller seems popular but I'm wondering if a lot of people like that because they played Melee and are used to it. Is there anything that makes the wii remote/nunchuk inherently harder to use?

If you never played before, you will be perfectly fine with the wiimote/nunchuck configuration.

I started with the classic controller and just switched to the nunchuck/wiimote combo and like it more. It took some getting use to but it feels more relaxed for me.

I own a Wavebird but have never used it. I really didn't like my old N64 controller so I would rather use the Wii controllers.

Nope. But there were periods of lag where everyone was stuttering for a bit, but it happened maybe twice in a match. Mostly at the beginning though.

I'd wager it's because they are used to it. But at the same time, I think the wii remote is missing one button next to A. Although, down is pretty close, I don't ever really taunt so I'll probably program that to something. I'm just going to perfect using the wii remote for myself. it's what everyone will have, heh.

I've had two experiences. In the first one, the game was incredibly laggy. There was a huge gap, I'm talking one or two seconds, between pressing the button and actually executing the attack.

The second time I connected, it wasn't nearly as laggy. However, there was still an ever so slightly noticeable delay in attacking.

That's actually how they programmed the netcode apparently. I read it on some review site. When one person starts to lag instead of letting the other players continue along normally they throttle everyones connection so everyone slows down like the lagger. I'll have to figure out where I read that though.

Don't quote me on this because I might be pulling an Andy Pettite and be misremembering.

Fox had a weird (and extremely amusing) accent. I never knew he said "fire" when you did up-B before I heard it in Brawl, I just thought it was him screaming something incoherently. Now he sounds like a Midwesterner. Pikachu's less annoying too. They made the whole game a lot less "campy"
