So don't agree. And, frankly, SO disappointed.

Maybe, because you live in a rural area with little traffic, you've gotten away with this so far, but lack of full vision is not only dangerous for you and every other motorist and pedestrian you come across., it's likely illegal.

Like drunk driving?

Sounds good to me. Pretty much all common sense stuff, but there are lot of assholes out there who don't seem to know common sense. They are really the reason why snow in the south causes accidents. They get 1 inch and it's panic mode and people drive like assholes and cause accidents.

Its not common sense. People in the south dont know it and never learn.
Virginia has had several recent winters with lots of snow. They keep doing the wrong things.
And all my years in Minnesota I saw plenty of people each year acting like they had no idea what snow was. That doesnt even make sense. But whatever.

I found one of those Hopkins snow brooms on the winter supplies cart at Wal-Mart but I haven't seen one there since. It may have been a factory sample. I really like it.

PSA threads never turn out as intended, I think it's an unwritten rule of the internet.

Move to southern California and don't worry about it. Or Tucson.

On topic of snow advice, check your HVAC vents once in a while to make sure they don't get blocked by condensate that ices up, or snow drifts.

I can see my neighbour's from my kitchen window and over the winter months it builds an upside down icicle. Basically it drips a drop of water every few seconds which lands on the ground below and it just starts to build up. Not sure how normal that is, that water should probably be going in the condensate line but guess some makes it out as steam. It's actually kinda neat to watch it go. A few weeks ago it eventually got up to where the pipe is, a good 7-8 feet or so, and then it started to block the pipe. I went out and pushed it over. Must have been close to 80lbs of ice. If that pipe blocks the furnace will fail to start (safety thing) and pipes will freeze.

No. More like Kauai or Florida or some other tropical paradise. Why live in the greenless dehydrated badlands.

Hawaii is an excellent place to live... decades ago before it was overrun by land-grabby rich bastards destroying what little of Hawaii is left.

TURN ON YOUR HEADLIGHTS!

I don't exactly go around reading the laws for every state, but it seems fairly commonplace to have to turn them on whenever your wipers are on or it's dark/dismal out. What has always seemed strange to me is that as much as I make fun of southern drivers for being goddamn awful, they always turn their lights on when there's an overcast sky.

Huh? I can see out the front windshield. That means, I can see everything down the road and to the left and right of the road out to several hundred feet. There is absolutely nothing that I would need to see out the rear window. The only thing that I could realistically - if you want to call it that - not notice is a cruise missile coming at me from the side.

Lane changing. Well mostly, you want to be able to see out your side windows for that, and see your mirrors.

Back window ends up getting full of snow as I drive no matter how well I clear it, so before I go to back into a space to park I end up having to go clear it. In winter I ALWAYS back into a space. Makes it so much easier to get out after. Heck that habit tends to follow me through summer then by the time I realize I don't have to do it anymore there's snow on the ground again.

What about clearing the snow off the roof of your car? I hate driving behind some jackass who wants to have a mobile winter white out or have chunks of ice falling off the back of his car...

Not a single mention of snow tires.

Good idea to have, but not really a must. Need to know your car's and your own limits though. Even with snow tires you are not invincible.

Front wheel drive is also much better in the snow I find. But at the end of the day it's all about the driver. Need to drive to the conditions. That seems to be the #1 thing people in the south don't seem to understand.

There aren't "lanes" around here before the snow has blown off the rest of the windows. If I pulled out of my driveway onto a 4 lane highway, then yes, I would clear the snow off the rest of the windows before pulling out.

We must have experienced different winters.

For the most part, this. Weird that getting struck by snow flying off a vehicle isn't an issue in this area - where most people don't brush the snow off their roof. But somehow, it's an issue elsewhere.

Its only an issue on the highway around here. People like to tailgate even in bad weather. I like having a nice rooster tail of snow to keep people off my rear.

I am not saying I never brush the snow off. Sometimes you get the thick stuff that is so deep the windshield washer fluid can't make it through. Then its time to brush stuff off. But I will never brush off the top of my car. There is no reason at all to do that.

My original point remains: I will happily accept snow driving tips from someone who drives in the snow. However the OP lives in an area that has only got 15" since July 1. That would be like me starting a thread on how to survive a drought.

Oh winter tires are definitely better, no doubt about that, but what I'm saying is you can get away without them if you know what you're doing. Idealy, its best to get some though. If you only have all seasons or summer tires you need to give much more room to stop, and accelerating needs to be done smoother or you just spin out. Problem is if someone in front of you with good tires decides to do a dead stop, you might not be able to stop on time. I've seen idiots do that too, for no reason at all they'll just dead stop right in the middle of the road when it's slippery.

Even with winters you can spin or slide if not careful. With the -30's it tends not to snow very much and the snow that is on the road just gets packed down to a point where it's almost as slippery and smooth as ice.

I've been driving in Michigan winters for 20 years and I've never owned a set of snow tires.

Buy a decent set of all seasons and you will be fine. But maybe our tire stores only stock higher quality all seasons because of our weather? I don't know. I just know I've never owned snow tires.
