There are conflicting reports, but I don't think it will be confirmed until his family is notified. I think they're trying to let the family do the notification to other family members rather than have those family members find out by TV which might be an unfortunately fruitless cause.
While it sounds horrible, great racers have tended to die this way - pushing the limits in the event that they dominated I guess the old addage that he died doing something he loved is probably the only way to make some sense of this.
The accident didn't even seem that bad to me either...

On second look (the first time I saw the accident was in slo-mo) it seemed like the first impact absorbed the brunt of the energy...I think it was a much harder impact than I first thought.
