Would you rather have 1 giant thread or hundreds of little threads for each game?

NHL hands out November honours

Sports Network
12/2/2003

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Washington Capitals center Robert Lang, New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur and Vancouver Canucks right wing Jason King were named NHL Offensive, Defensive and Rookie of the Month, respectively, for November.

Lang collected points in all 14 games during the month for the Caps and led all NHL scorers with 22 points (11 goals). He also posted an impressive plus- minus rating of plus-eight.

Lang's overall points streak is currently at 15 games, best in the league at present time.

Brodeur held opponents to one goal or fewer in seven of 12 starts in November and posted an 8-2-1 record during the month. Brodeur recorded three shutouts to raise his career total to 68, the most among active goaltenders.

King led all rookies in goals (eight) and points (11) during the month to claim the honor. The eight goals led the Canucks and he posted his first career two-goal game in a victory over Detroit on November 3.

TV numbers indicate Canucks becoming Canada's team

BURNABY, B.C. (CP) - If you use TV numbers as a measure, the title of Canada's team has moved from the centre of the universe to the West Coast.
The Vancouver Canucks are drawing more viewers to their NHL games on English TV than the Toronto Maple Leafs. Goodbye Yonge and Bloor, Canada's new hockey crossroads is now Robson and Thurlow.

"That's pretty big," veteran forward Trevor Linden said Wednesday after the Canucks skated at their Burnaby, B.C., practice rink.

"When you talk about TV numbers, when you outdraw the Leafs, that's pretty substantial."

The Canucks are averaging 330,000 viewers for their games on Rogers Sportsnet, a 40-per-cent increase from last year.

The Leafs average 326,000 viewers on Sportsnet and 320,000 on TSN. That's a drop of 27 per cent for Sportsnet and 36 per cent for TSN.

The Montreal Canadiens have the best TV numbers, with an average 375,000 viewers watching their games on the French-language RDS, but those numbers are down 12 per cent from last year.

So, can the Canucks lay claim to the title of Canada's team?

"I don't know about that but I think we're getting there," said Canucks captain Markus Naslund.

"The media focus on the Leafs and Habs is probably bigger. I think we are appreciated a lot in Canada."

Todd Bertuzzi, the hulking right-winger who grew up in Sudbury, Ont., said you don't have to be a genius to figure out why people would rather watch Vancouver than Toronto.

The young Canucks, with their wide-open offensive style, are like watching a rock show. The aging Leafs, with their plodding defensive game, are a night at the symphony.

"Ask around hockey fans, go to bars and pubs and ask who is the most entertaining team," said Bertuzzi.

"You'll get your answer. They love the fact our coach rarely puts reins on us and lets us be creative. That's exciting to watch and that's why it's fun to play in a system like that."

Bertuzzi balked at the suggestion the Canucks can be called Canada's team.

Montreal, who in 1993 became the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup, own that honour, he said.

"Until somebody else takes the Stanley Cup, then it's Montreal," said Bertuzzi.

"You have to fight for your respect and respect is what you win. Until you win something you can't claim anything."

Heading into Tuesday night the Canucks were first in the Western Conference with a 14-6-3-2 record for 33 points and led the NHL in goal scoring with 81.

The Leafs, who are riding a six-game win streak, were second in the East with a 13-6-5-2 record for 33 points and have scored 68 goals.

Toronto beat Vancouver in both games the teams played this year.

While the Canucks have beat the Leafs in mid-week TV ratings, Toronto remains king in merchandise sales. The Leafs are first overall in the entire NHL in merchandise sales in North America although both Montreal and Vancouver rate in the top six.

In other television markets, the Edmonton Oilers are averaging 88,000 viewers a game on Sportsnet, a decrease of 16 per cent.

The Calgary Flames are enjoying a 15-per-cent increase to 100,000 fans a game while the Ottawa Senators have dropped 15 per cent to 58,000.

The CBC doesn't keep track of which teams are the biggest draw.

The Hockey Night in Canada doubleheader averages about 1.3 million viewers for its early game and 829,000 for the night cap.

The recent matchup between the Canucks and Leafs attracted 1.4 million viewers. That match came on the heels of the outdoor game in Edmonton which drew an audience of 2.74 million.

Linden said playing on the West Coast will always limit the Canucks national appeal.

"When our home games are on (TV), half of Canada is sleeping," he chuckled.

Besides their style of play, the Canucks have also raised their provincial image by holding training camps in places like Vernon and Kamloops.

"The little towns we go to are so supportive," said Linden.

"It really includes them. I think this is B.C.'s team."

Jarome Iginla and Martin Gelinas also tallied goals and Craig Conroy chipped in a pair of assists for Calgary, which has earned at least a point in seven straight games (4-0-1-2). Miikka Kiprusoff made 19 saves for the Flames.

The Canucks' last contest came on Saturday night in Calgary and they came away with a 4-4 tie. Brendan Morrison posted his first career hat trick, including a goal with 2:09 remaining in the third period, to help Vancouver salvage the point.

Ryan Kesler also scored and Dan Cloutier stopped 29 shots for the Canucks, who are unbeaten in their last three (2-0-1). Markus Naslund finished with three assists and Todd Bertuzzi added two helpers.

The meeting on Saturday night was the second of the season between the two teams. The Canucks' Artem Chubarov posted a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win in Vancouver on October 9.

Naslund, who was awarded with the NHL's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, is currently on a six-game scoring streak. He has four goals and nine assists in that stretch. Calgary's Jordan Leopold is in the midst of his own five-game run (1g, 4a).

The Flames are winless in their last two games (0-1-1) in Vancouver, but have gone 3-1-1 in their last five trips to British Columbia.

Vancouver is 1-0-3 in its last four meetings with Calgary overall.

The Canucks have just one loss in 11 games (9-1-1) at home this season. The Flames are just 3-4-0-2 in nine road contests this year.

Canucks host Flames; Naslund questionable

The Calgary Flames try for the second straight win as they head into GM Place tonight to face the Vancouver Canucks. Crawford's efforts to be rewarded

Canadian Press
12/4/2003

BURNABY, B.C. (CP) - When Marc Crawford was hired as coach of the Vancouver Canucks he took over a team with a bloated payroll and an attitude that accepted losing like the cold winter rains.

Now, in his sixth season in Vancouver, the high-scoring Canucks are considered one of the NHL's elite teams and Crawford appears poised to sign a three-year contract extension that will pay him around $1.3 million US a season.

Brian Burke had been the Vancouver general manager for half a season when he fired Mike Keenan and made Crawford the Canucks' 15th head coach on Jan. 24, 1999.

``I knew when I came here it was a team that was in need of a change,'' Crawford, 42, said Thursday, prior to the Canucks playing the Calgary Flames.

``We needed to identify the guys who would be keepers and who would be the guys we would cast away. When I came in, along with Brian, it allowed us to have a real fresh start and cast aside some of what had been happening in the past.''

The Belleville, Ont., native didn't want to talk about a published report that said he was near to signing a contract that would make him one of the highest paid coaches isn the league.

``We're close,'' Crawford said. ``I'm not going to talk about it until it gets done. It's not the place to talk about it.''

When Crawford took over the Canucks, Vancouver had missed the playoffs the two previous seasons. Meanwhile the team was paying millions of dollars to players like Mark Messier and Alexander Mogilny.

Burke trimmed the budget while still finding money to keep players like Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi.

Crawford went to work building a fast-skating, offensive team that is learning to play defence.

Last season, the Canucks set a team record with 104 points and won their first playoff series since 1995.

Along the way Crawford has become the winningest coach in Vancouver history with 175 victories heading into Thursday night.

``Our team has continued to progress and do well,'' said Crawford, who in 1995 was the youngest person to be named NHL coach of the year.

``We have a good group that has a lot of great athletes.''

While Crawford has been a rose in the bouquet of the Canucks success, he comes with thorns.

Some days he has a dry sense of humour that can warm up a room. Other days he's curt and cold.

Sometimes his temper explodes like a volcano. Crawford has been caught on television with his face blood red, eyes shooting fire, screaming at either his players or the officials.

He can take a dislike to a player, dooming them to the press box, or openly criticize them.

Recently Crawford publicly apologized after saying backup goaltender Johan Hedberg was terrible in an overtime loss to Philadelphia. The comment rankled some players in the dressing room.

``He likes to issue challenges,'' said centre Brendan Morrison, who despite being part of the Canucks high-scoring first unit often feels the lash of Crawford's tongue.

``He can be very emotional at times. That's part of the reason he's been so successful.

``I've noticed over the course of the time I've been here he's kind of got away from ranting. He understands in today's game that act kind of wears thin after a while. He picks his spots now.''

Crawford admits he's mellowed.

``Hopefully in seeing things a few more times you handle them better when you see them again,'' he said.

``With our club staying with the same group for a long time, guys understand how I operate and what my expectations are. On the other side, I think I understand what the individuals we have on our team need.''

Mike Keane, signed by Vancouver as a free agent this year, was a member of the Crawford-coached Colorado Avalanche that won the Stanley Cup in 1996.

``If you're doing something wrong he'll tell you,'' Keane said.

``Some other areas I've been in it's play the right way or you're not going to play anymore. That's not coaching.

``If you're doing something wrong he tells you. If you're doing something right he tells you. He has good communication with his players.''

Crawford, who played 176 playing for the Canucks between 1981 and 1987, began his coaching career with the Quebec Nordiques in 1994. He became the third-youngest coach to win a Stanley Cup with Colorado, then left the Avalanche in 1998.
