I though Magoo was the only sh!tty ref.
The goal should've counted, with a penalty to the goalie for diving.

Second period refing wasn't much better .

Third period should be good in the flipn' ref's stay out of it.

No winner, but a great game! If it wasn't for Aebischer the Canucks would have killed the Avs. Even the May line was getting some great chances.

edit: damn keypad intermingling numbers with my letters!

Canucks, Avalanche battle to draw

Canadian Press
12/12/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Canucks were quick to embrace a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.

The Canucks had been looking less than impressive after the first three games of their pre-Christmas homestand.

They were thumped 4-1 by the Calgary Flames, scrambled for a 1-1 tie with the Minnesota Wild and had to get four goals from Markus Naslund to gain a 4-3 overtime win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

But Vancouver made a statement in the third period against Colorado by outshooting them 20-6 and generating several chances to win.

``I think it turned the corner for us,'' said Ed Jovanovski who scored the equalizer on a solo dash at 6:02 of the third. ``We showed our determination and our skating legs in the third period.

``If we play a lot more like that, we'll be a tough team to beat.''

Rob Blake, who might be battling Jovanovski for Norris Trophy honours at the end of the season, gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead in the third period. Both goals were unassisted.

Avalanche goalie David Aebischer preserved the single point with a 37-save effort as both clubs had good scoring chances in overtime.

Naslund said the Canucks' effort was reminiscent of the team's play during its early-season success that included a 10-game home unbeaten streak.

``We really skated well and were forceful in the third and that's the way we have to play and that's the way we played earlier in the season,'' said Naslund.

The tie left both clubs tied for first in the Northwest Division but the Avalanche have a game in hand on Vancouver.

The result also extended Colorado's unbeaten streak to seven games (4-0-3) while Vancouver is 3-1-3 over a similar span.

Jovanovski scored his sixth goal of the season on an end-to-end dash, beating two defenders and firing through two more. The puck found the net under Aebischer's glove.

``The ice was there,'' said Jovanovski, who is second to Blake in Western Conference all-star balloting. ``I tried to take what's given to me. I just kind of turned up and took a shot on net. The only thing I had planned out was just try to get it to the net and shoot it through a screen.''

Aebischer said he saw the shot all the way.

``I saw it, I have to stop that one, no question about it but I can't change how it went in,'' he said. ``It's a little disappointing for our team to give up too many shots in the third but we got a point so that's a positive thing.''

Blake agreed.

``We were real fortunate to get out of here with a point,'' he said. ``We came out to protect it instead of trying to go after it.

``When you're playing a good team like this, you can see what happens ... you rely heavily on your goaltender.''

Blake said his goal on Canuck netminder Alex Auld was the result of a strong forecheck by Peter Worrell that created a turnover by Daniel Sedin.

``And I found a spot in the net, fortunately.''

Auld, a call-up from the AHL Manitoba Moose because of a groin injury to No. 1 netminder Dan Cloutier and a wrist sprain suffered by backup Johan Hedberg, had a 4-3 record over two seasons with Vancouver.

''I felt pretty good,'' said Auld who looked composed stopping 27 shots. ``I thought I settled down pretty quick and started playing my game.''

Brad May appeared to tie the game in the third period but Vancouver teammate Mike Keane was given a penalty for goaltender interference on the play.

NOTES: Canuck centre Henrik Sedin was in the lineup after missing practice Wednesday with a groin injury ... X-rays on Hedberg's left wrist proved negative ... Auld spent 18 hours travelling to Vancouver on Tuesday ... he has won five of his last six starts for the AHL Manitoba Moose and has a 2.59 goals-against average and .911 save percentage ... Worrell made his debut in a Colorado uniform after injuring his knee on the opening day of training camp ... he was obtained in an off-season trade with the Florida Panthers ... the Canucks conclude their five-game homestand Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Canucks' Naslund scores another OT winner

Canadian Press
12/15/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - Markus Naslund is becoming Mr. Overtime for the Vancouver Canucks.

Naslund scored his second overtime winner in three games Sunday night to rescue a five-game homestand as Vancouver defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1.

On Tuesday, he scored all four goals in a 4-3 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

``It's fun to play when it opens up but we'd like to win in regulation,'' said Naslund, whose club has played four overtime games in a row and has only two regulation victories in its last 17 games.

The Hurricanes' trapping defence frustrated the Canucks, who didn't score until Trevor Linden tied the game 1-1 in the third period. Rookie Eric Staal got the Carolina goal.

``We didn't play the best of games but came up with the big plays at the right time,'' said Naslund.

He took Todd Bertuzzi's pass to the net and beat relief goalie Jamie Storr.

``I saw Todd pick up the puck and tried to skate down and pick up a little speed and I found a hole,'' said Naslund. ``Todd put it in a good spot and I could skate right in.''

Storr entered the game at 8:48 of the third period because starter Kevin Weekes began cramping up.

``For some reason I kept thinking he was going to come across in front of me so I didn't want to commit,'' said Storr, who stopped eight of nine shots while Weekes blocked 22 of 23. ``I tried to stay up a bit but he's just such a great player. But if he tries that again on me, I'll have him ... it's a learning process.''

The Canucks moved a point ahead of the Colorado Avalanche in the Northwest Division. The Avalanche have a game in hand.

The loss was the ninth in 11 road contests for the Hurricanes who are averaging fewer than two goals in their last dozen games.

Vancouver also had a surprise in goal as Alex Auld started for the second straight game when regular backup Johan Hedberg aggravated a wrist injury taking shots at the morning skate. No. 1 goalie Dan Cloutier is out with a groin injury.

``I think that mentally it's easier than having been here for a week and been sitting on the bench and then get thrown in,'' said Auld, who made 30 saves. ``I've been playing a lot in Winnipeg (the Canucks' AHL farm team) and I've got into a bit of a groove. When you come in this situation when you've been playing well and you're confident, then the transition isn't as tough.''

Staal squeezed past defenceman Ed Jovanovski along the boards and beat Auld with a backhand on his goal.

``It's frustrating,'' Staal said of the overtime loss. I thought we played well tonight. I don't know what it is. We're just not bearing down on our chances and putting them in the back of the net.''

Linden, who beat Weekes with a rising one-time slapshot after taking a cross-ice pass from Mattias Ohlund, also said he had a frustrating night against Carolina.

``You can't do your own thing against a system like that because they're going to cause you to create a turnover so you kind of have to keep banging away at it,'' he said.

``We understand that it's hard when you play teams like Minnesota, like Carolina at home and they're not giving any chances up. That's how they feel they can get points and there's a lot of teams out there like that.''

Notes: Hedberg, who backed up Auld, has suffered four injuries since training camp, three inflicted by teammates ... Cloutier says his groin injury is healing and he'll accompany the club on a three-game road trip ... Jiri Sleger dressed for the second time in 14 games as Vancouver went with seven defencemen ... Rookie Jason King was a healthy scratch for the second time this season ... Carolina plays nine of its next 11 games at home.

Canucks' Lindgren has back surgery

Associated Press
12/14/2003

VANCOUVER (AP) - Vancouver Canucks centre Mats Lindgren will remain out of the lineup at least six weeks after having back surgery for the second back time in two months.

Lindgren hasn't played this season after re-injuring his back, which bothered him all of last season, during a morning skate Oct. 11, just prior to the Canucks' second game of the season.

The 29-year-old Swede had surgery to repair the disc problem and recently resumed skating in the hopes of returning by Christmas. Now he'll be out until February following the second round of surgery Friday.

Canucks call up Fedorov

Canadian Press
12/15/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - The younger brother of Anaheim star Sergei Fedorov was called up by the Vancouver Canucks on Monday.

Centre Fedor Fedorov will join the team in Nashville and play Tuesday night against the Predators. He leads the AHL's Manitoba Moose in scoring with 11 goals and 20 points in 26 games.

Fedorov had one assist in seven games with the Canucks last season. He was recalled for 10 days in November this year but did not get into the lineup. The Russian was selected by Vancouver as the 66th pick in the 2001 entry draft.

Backup goaltender Johan Hedberg did not join the team on Monday's flight to Nashville after re-injuring his left wrist Sunday. He stayed in Vancouver for treatment but could rejoin the Canucks on their three-game trip.

Starting goalie Dan Cloutier, out the last three games with a sore groin, made the trip and could return Tuesday.
