Canucks sign Crawford to extension

Associated Press
12/31/2003

CHICAGO (AP) - Vancouver coach Marc Crawford was given a three-year contract extension, the Canucks said Wednesday night during their game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Canucks general manager Brian Burke made the announcement during a television interview in between the second and third periods of Vancouver's 4-3 overtime victory.

``We are very pleased to announce that Marc Crawford has agreed to a three-year contract extension,'' Burke said. ``It's well deserved, he's done a real nice job here.''

Back on Jan. 24, 1999, Crawford took over a struggling team that had missed the playoffs for two straight seasons. He has since become the winningest coach in team history, compiling a record of 182-150-58-21 and leading Vancouver to the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

``It's taken a little bit longer than anybody would have liked,'' said Crawford, who added that the delay was caused by Burke's unsettled contract. ``He's confident that he's going to get his done. He told me to go ahead. I want to stay here and Brian wants to stay here.''

Last season, the Canucks set team records with 104 points, a 10-game winning streak and a 14-game unbeaten streak. They won their first playoff series since 1995.

``I think that's a good move,'' leading scorer Markus Naslund said. ''He's done an excellent job with this team. He's well respected.

``I think it was a smart move to do it early and get a long term deal, too.''

Crawford played 176 games with the Canucks between 1981 and 1987 before turning to coaching.

He began his career in the NHL with the Quebec Nordiques in 1994, and in his first season became the league's youngest coach of the year. He was the third-youngest to win a Stanley Cup when the relocated Nordiques won as the Colorado Avalanche in 1996.

``He's done a good job with a lot of the guys,'' forward Todd Bertuzzi said. ``I think collectively we've all put this franchise on the map and let them know we are a contender.''

Crawford also coached Team Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics before leaving Colorado at the end of the 1997-98 season. He became the Canucks' 15th head coach midway through the next season.

He is 347-238-97-21 in 9 seasons.

Bertuzzi delivers for Canucks in OT

Associated Press
12/31/2003

CHICAGO (AP) - Todd Bertuzzi and Markus Naslund are still the ones the Vancouver Canucks count on.

Bertuzzi scored a power-play goal off a rebound of Naslund's shot at 4:33 of overtime to lift Vancouver to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night.

``Me and Markus have been talking about our power play, and trying to get him to shoot the puck low enough off the pads so I can get a chance to fight for it,'' Bertuzzi said. ``It worked tonight. It was a good shot. It went off the pads, I got it off my backhand and put it on my forehand and in.''

Despite the road victory and the two points, the Canucks were disappointed they let the Blackhawks rally from a two-goal deficit to tie the game.

``We got to understand that we have to put teams away early. We can't let teams stick around,'' Bertuzzi said. ``To let them back in the game was a mistake on our part, but we're fortunate to get two points out of it.

``We let them back a little bit. They worked hard to get back. too,'' Naslund said. ``We took a little bit of a step back in the third, but we found a way to win again.''

Vancouver improved to 21-9-6-2 and is 7-2-3 in its last 12 games.

Artem Chubarov, Henrik Sedin and Brent Sopel also scored for Vancouver.

``The only way we're going to win is to get goals from all kind of guys at the right time,'' Naslund said. It's good to see for them personally, too. Hopefully it will boost their confidence, too.''

Chicago has dropped three of four games and remains near the bottom of the Western Conference with 29 points.

One bright spot for Chicago was the return of Alex Zhamnov. The Blackhawks' captain returned after missing 35 games following back surgery to score his first goal of the season.

``It was a little tough in the first five minutes,'' Zhamnov said. ``It doesn't matter how hard you practice, a game situation is different. But after that it was fine. I think the second game will be much easier for me.''

Zhamnov tied it at 7:07 of the second period when he grabbed a loose puck in the high slot and beat Dan Cloutier from 25 feet.

``When I first had the puck, I saw big traffic. I just tried to shoot the puck,'' Zhmanov said. ``I don't think he ever saw it.''

Mark Bell and Tuomo Ruutu also scored for the Blackhawks.

Chubarov opened the scoring at 5:48 of the first period. After a pass behind the net from Mike Keane, Chubarov slipped a backhanded shot under Michael Leighton.

Sedin regained the lead for Vancouver with nine minutes remaining in the second. Sedin took a pass from twin brother, Daniel, at the blue line and drove to the net to beat Leighton low.

Sopel scored a power-play goal to give Vancouver a 3-1 lead with 7:05 left in the second period. Sopel's slap shot from the blue line deflected off the left post and got by a screened Leighton.

Bell cut the Vancouver lead to 3-2 with 34 seconds remaining in the second period. Left alone at the top of the left circle, Bell beat Cloutier high on the right side.

Ruutu scored a power-play goal with 7:38 remaining to tie it. From the left side of the crease, the rookie forward lifted the puck over outstretched goalie Dan Cloutier and into the right corner.

Cloutier made 29 saves in earning his 15th win. Leighton faced 29 shots and fell to 4-11-5. Notes: Referee Dean Warren was hit by a deflected puck and was cut by his left eye with 27 seconds left in the second period. He missed the third period. The Blackhawks assigned rookie forwards Igor Radulov and Mikhail Yakubov to Norfolk of the AHL. ... Leighton was chosen as the NHL's defensive player of the week last week when he went 2-1 with two shutouts. The Canucks tied the team record by reaching 50 points before Jan. 1.

Canucks face Avs in Northwest battle

The Sports Network
1/2/2004

The Colorado Avalanche are used to being on top of the Northwest Division at the end of the season. The Vancouver Canucks are trying their best to keep that from happening this time. The first-place Canucks hope to beat the second-place Avalanche for the second time in six days as the teams meet up at GM Place.

The Canucks, who are one win away from their first three-game winning streak since a five-game run from Oct. 28-Nov. 5, hold a six-point lead over Calgary and Colorado in the division.

Colorado, which has won nine straight division titles, hasn't made up much ground in the standings of late, going 4-3-5 in December.

Vancouver, which topped Colorado 3-2 last Monday, is coming off a 4-3 overtime win over Chicago on Wednesday.

Todd Bertuzzi scored a power-play goal off a rebound of Markus Naslund's shot at 4:33 of overtime as the Canucks regrouped after squandering a two-goal lead.

"We got to understand that we have to put teams away early. We can't let teams stick around," Bertuzzi said. "To let them back in the game was a mistake on our part, but we're fortunate to get two points out of it."

Vancouver has lost just two of its last 12 games (7-2-3).

The Avalanche, meanwhile, are coming off a 2-1 win over Calgary on Wednesday.

Peter Worrell and Steve Moore scored their first goals of the season, and David Aebischer made 30 saves for Colorado.

"We can't rely on Joe (Sakic) and Peter (Forsberg)'s line all the time because every night, every team is going out there to stop them," Worrell said. "We've got some good players on other lines and we have to be able to chip in."

Aebischer improved to 15-7-5.

"He's playing good for us right now," Colorado defenseman Adam Foote said of his goaltender. "He's focused and giving us a chance to win. We're fortunate to have him back there for us playing the way he is."

Colorado won for just the second time in nine games (2-3-4).

Forsberg leads Avalanche past Canucks

Associated Press
1/3/2004

VANCOUVER (CP) - Peter Forsberg set up three goals, including Milan Hejduk's winner in the third period, as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 on Friday night.

Alex Tanguay finished the night with a goal and two assists while Rob Blake picked up two points, including his ninth goal of the season.

Joe Sakic rounded out the Avalanche scoring with an insurance goal at 15:41 of the third, while David Aebischer made 22 saves in the win.

Markus Naslund and Brad May scored for the Canucks (21-19-6-2) while Dan Cloutier made 29 saves.

The Avalanche (19-10-7-1) avenged not only a loss to Vancouver only five nights earlier, in which the they squandered a two-goal lead, but also pulls them to within four points of the Northwest Division-leading Canucks.

Forsberg now has four assists in four games since missing 19 contests with a groin injury.

Colorado scored two power-play goals in six chances while the Canucks finished 1-for-7. The Avalanche outshot the Canucks 33-24.

Vancouver recovered from a slow start, which saw the team get just two shots on goal through the first 10 minutes, and took a 1-0 lead with 32 seconds to go in the first period.

The Canucks, pressing on their third power play of the frame, were turned away by Aebischer on a number of consecutive chances but then Naslund pulled the puck out of a scramble in front of the net and scored on a high wrist shot.

The lead didn't last much longer than the intermission, though, as the Avalanche capitalized on a two-man advantage 1:55 into the second period. Blake, pinching in from the point, took a pass from Forsberg and let go of a wrist shot that beat Cloutier stickside.

Tanguay then gave Colorado a 2-1 lead at the 8:31 mark when he batted Forsberg's rebound under Cloutier's pads and into the net.

The Canucks struggled throughout the period to penetrate the Colorado zone and ended up getting outshot 19-5. The last Avalanche shot was on a Sakic breakaway in the dying seconds but Cloutier came up with the big save.

Vancouver regrouped to start the third, though, and pulled even 2:10 in to the period. Jiri Slegr took a long slapshot from the point that Aebischer stopped but May drove hard to the net and backhanded the rebound around the goaltender for his second goal of the season.

Colorado restored its lead on the power play after Cloutier was called for delay of game after knocking his net off its moorings. With the Avalanche set up, Forsberg started to skate in behind the Vancouver goal but then made a backhand pass out front to Hejduk, who lifted a high wristhot into the net.

Sakic iced the victory with just over four minutes remaining when he fired a wristhot from the faceoff dot that got past Cloutier stickside.

Notes: Canucks rookie Jason King, who scored eight goals in November but none last month, was a healthy scratch for the second straight game ... Daniel Sedin was cut after taking a high stick to the face from Rob Blake midway through the third period. No penalty was called.
