VANCOUVER (CP) - Daniel Sedin scored four goals, the third breaking a tie late in the third period and the final one into an empty net, as the Vancouver Canucks stopped a three-game home-ice losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night.
It was the first four-goal night of Sedin's four-year NHL career. He has held a hot hand on a Canucks team badly in need of scoring, collecting nine goals in 10 games.
Sedin's third goal came with just over seven minutes left. He took a pass from brother Henrik, skated around defenceman Jiri Fischer and beat goaltender Manny Lagace with a shot over the glove side.
He then scored into an empty net with 34 seconds left in a third period where Vancouver had outshot Detroit 14-5.
The win was just the third in Vancouver's last 10 games.
Henrik Zetterberg and Kris Draper scored power-play goals for the Red Wings, who remain one point ahead of Colorado for first place in the Western Conference.
Veteran Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios left the game in the second period with a bruised shoulder and didn't return.
Chelios, 42, was hurt when Bertuzzi fell on him after a faceoff in the Detroit end.
The 20-year veteran who has two goals and 12 assists this season, lay on the ice for several minutes in obvious pain while a trainer attended him. He left the ice clutching his shoulder and went to the dressing room.
Sedin opened the scoring at 12:33 of the first period when his one-time shot from a sharp angle slipped between Lagace's toe and the post.
Detroit used back-to-back power-play goals to regain the lead. On the first goal, Ray Whitney fired a shot that hit Brett Hull in front of the net. Zetterberg picked up the loose puck and put it past Dan Cloutier at 17:26 of the first.
Early in second period Draper fired a 40-foot shot through traffic that bounced off a player and into the net.
Sedin tied the game at 9:43. Defenceman Nolan Baumgartner had a breakaway but shot wide. Big defenceman Marek Malik went behind the net and sent the puck out to Sedin, who beat Legace.
The Canucks played with a lineup depleted by injuries to captain Markus Naslund (concussion), defenceman Ed Jovanovski (separated shoulder) and forward Magnus Arvedson (knee surgery). That meant four members of the AHL Manitoba Moose - Baumgartner, Fedor Fedorov, Tyler Bouck and Brandon Ried - were forced into service.
The Canuck homestand continues with games against San Jose on Thursday and St. Louis on Saturday.
Notes: Canucks general manager Brian Burke, who is still waiting for a new contract from team owner John McCaw, raised eyebrows Tuesday when he said in a radio interview he was a ``lame-duck GM.'' ... The Canucks recalled Reid from Manitoba to replace Matt Cooke, who sat out the last game of a two-game suspension. ... Vancouver entered Tuesday night's game with the NHL's top rated penalty kill at 86.5 per cent. ... Bertuzzi has eight power play goals. He had 25 last season
