Canucks win fourth straight

Associated Press
1/29/2004

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Magnus Arvedson scored two goals for the second straight game and the Vancouver Canucks extended their winning streak to four Thursday night with a 4-2 victory over the slumping St. Louis Blues.

Daniel Sedin had a goal and two assists for Vancouver. Arvedson and Markus Naslund sparked the Canucks' four-goal third period, scoring in a span of 1:42 to end Chris Osgood's shutout bid and put Vancouver ahead.

Arvedson scored his eighth goal of the season, and fourth in three games since returning from a six-game absence due to a herniated disc, for a two-goal gap midway through the third.

Mark Rycroft and Keith Tkachuk scored for the Blues, who are 0-4-1 in their last five games and 5-11-5 in their last 21. They've scored 10 goals in their last seven games, and lost when leading after two periods for only the second time all season, slipping to 19-2-2.

Osgood is 1-9-4 with two no-decisions since Dec. 18.

Sedin scored on a breakaway to finish off the Canucks' big third period, which erased a 1-0 deficit, and assisted on both of Arvedson's goals.

Rycroft gave the Blues the lead at 9:58 of the second period with his seventh goal, and first point in seven games.

Arvedson tied it at 2:11 of the third on the receiving end of two long passes, the first from Brian Allen near the Vancouver goal and the next tapped ahead by Sedin at centre ice.

The Canucks had been 0-for-6 on the power play, including 1:50 of a two-man advantage early in the first period, before Naslund broke the tie. He scored his 28th goal from the side of the net off a feed from Brendan Morrison.

Arvedson made it 3-1 at 10:52 with a shot from the right side that deflected off the shin pads of defenceman Chris Pronger and scooted between Osgood's pads. Tkachuk cut the gap to one at 12:16 off a setup from behind the net by Dallas Drake, but Sedin broke free and answered for the Canucks at 16:52.

Notes: Blues F Pavol Demitra missed the game with a hip pointer sustained Wednesday, and coach Joel Quenneville said he might miss a week or two . . . The Blues claimed F Pascal Rheaume off waivers from the New York Rangers for his second stint with the team. Rheaume previously was with St. Louis from 1997-01 and is expected to play Saturday against the Devils . . . The Canucks are 5-8-5-1 when trailing after two periods . . . Vancouver began a five-game, eight-day road trip.

Canucks face rejuvenated Capitals

The Sports Network
1/31/2004

The Washington Capitals look to win three straight games for the first time in over a year, while the Vancouver Canucks try to match their season-high winning streak at five when the teams meet at the MCI Center.

Washington snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win at the New York Rangers on Wednesday before beating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 on the road one night later.

Bates Battaglia broke a third-period tie and Peter Bondra scored twice Thursday to help Washington win back-to-back games for just the third team this season.

The Capitals haven't won three straight since Jan. 10-13, 2003.

Washington is 14th in the 15-team Eastern Conference, 16 points behind the eighth-place New York Islanders for the final playoff spot.

Washington will be without defenseman Jason Doig, who was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Friday for kneeing Carolina center Kevyn Adams on Thursday. Adams' left knee was injured on the play, and he did not return.

On Wednesday, Doig gave New York Rangers star Eric Lindros a concussion with a hard, but clean hit.

Vancouver began a five-game road trip Thursday, beating St. Louis 4-2 for its fourth straight victory. The Canucks won a season-high five in a row from Oct. 28-Nov. 5.

Magnus Arvedson scored two goals for the second straight game and Daniel Sedin had a goal and two assists as the Canucks outscored the Blues 4-1 in the third period.

Vancouver improved to 5-8-5-1 when trailing after two periods.

``I think the first two periods, we didn't play as well as we can,'' said Arvedson, who has four goals in three games since returning from a six-game absence due to a herniated disk.

``We were a little bit slow. But in the third we came back good like we should, and that's a good sign.''

The Canucks, who have 15 wins away from home this season, also visit the Rangers, New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils on the eight-day trip.
