NHL Mail: Rankings, Sopel and Luongo

Scott Cullen, TSN.ca
1/31/2004

1Dear Mr. Cullen, I think your formula for defenseman might overemphasize offensive characteristics. Certainly Brent Sopel, who is a good offensive defenseman but very sloppy defensively, should not be higher than three time defending Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidtstrom. Also, I was curious where Ed Jovanovski finished. There is no question he is the best defenseman on the Canucks, and certainly better than Bryan McCabe, failed to make your list. I know your probably more qualified than I am to decide who should be where, but I think the omission of Jovanovski, who is a game breaker and a future Norris Trophy winner, takes credibility from your list. Mark Danylchuk, Sudbury, ON

Mark, you're not going to have to sell me on Nicklas Lidstrom's accomplishments. He's absolutely been one of the best in the league over the past decade, but Sopel happens to have more points, and a better plus-minus, in fewer games this season. As for Jovo, his minus-1 rating isn't doing him any favours and he's sitting in the 30ish neighbourhood of my rankings depending on the night. If Sopel is indeed sloppy defensively, it would presumably show up at some point in his plus-minus. Considering his plus-13 still has him in the middle of the pack on the Canucks' blueline, it's hard to punish him for his defensive liabilities just yet. - SC

Hey I was just looking at your Player Rankings like I always do and I come across your new Player Rankings for the top 25 d-men and I am lets say the least shocked at one major thing....Ok I am one of the biggest Canuck fans you will see around and I look at your ranking and it has Brent Sopel near
the top ahead of Ohlund and the fact Jovo aint even on the list is sickening....But Sopel?? He turns over more pucks in one game then Ohlund and Jovo do in a year....He has moderate speed...He has a moderate shot.....he defense skillz aint that great and he has one of the ugliest looks in NHL how can you put someone like him ahead of Ohlund or Jovo??? He's the one player id like to see go on my Nuckers cause he gives away the game more then any of the D on Vancouver...Thanks From Victoria, Scott T

Scott, putting aside Sopel's looks for a moment, I can rank him ahead of Ohlund and Jovanovski because Sopel has better numbers this season than those two. I've seen Sopel turn the puck over a bit but, at the end of the day, as long as he has the best numbers, he must be doing something right, wouldn't you say? - SC

Dear Mr. Cullen, after reading the TSN.ca top nhl player rankings for defencemen I have only one question. Why is Brent Sopel ranked number 8th and higher than say, his counter part Mattias Ohlund, or players like Scott Niedermayer, or Jason Woolley? First of all I am a Canucks fan, (friends even call me trent sopel) however since I'm not in vancouver right now I haven't watched Canucks hockey for a while. I understand that Sopel has a good plus minus, and point total etc., but Sopel to me is known for crappy and risky defensive plays, some of his errors are just heartpounding to watch. Can you tell me what his done in the past weeks to become 8th on your books? Thank you very much, sincerely, Trent Guo

Trent, some of the credit for Sopel being rated so highly probably should go to Ohlund, who is a steadier defensive presence. However, since they are on the ice together quite a bit, it's hard to statistically differentiate which one made the costly turnover. That leaves Sopel's slightly better offensive numbers to leave him with a slight edge in overall rating. What's interesting is that high-risk Sopel was plus-21 in 2001-2002 before sinking to minus-15 last year. Back up at plus-13 this year, that's a pretty substantial improvement so, until his errant ways catch up to him, he'll remain ranked among the league's better blueliners. - SC

Ohlund is hands down the best D-man on the Canucks. If I was a goalie with a 2 on 1, I'd pick Ohlund to be the guy in front of me. I really like Salo too.

Canucks' powerplay too much for Capitals

Associated Press
1/31/2004

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Vancouver Canucks simply over-powered the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

Markus Naslund's 29th goal of the season was the first of four straight on the power play as the Canucks earned a 6-1 victory over the Capitals.

``I think they scored four power-play goals against us last year,'' Washington's Mike Grier said. ``We made a point of trying to stay out of the box tonight and we didn't.

``There's just too much talent out there with the puck. We hung Olie (Kolzig) out to dry and they capitalized.''

Brad May, Wade Brookbank, Trevor Linden, Jarkko Ruutu and Sammy Salo also scored for Vancouver, which had seven players register points on the power play.

Robert Lang scored the only goal for Washington, which lost for the first time in three games.

In last season's only meeting between the two teams, the Canucks went 5-for-10 on the power play on their way to a 6-0 win.

On Saturday, Vancouver's percentage against the Capitals was even better.

The Canucks went 4-for-7 and started to take control in the second period with Naslund, Linden and Ruutu all scoring with the extra attacker - the final two with less than a minute to play.

``We were very determined with the puck and everybody with every unit we put on were on the same page,'' Vancouver coach Marc Crawford said. ``We had great net presence on all the goals. ``It's important when you get that because it makes it tough for goaltenders to see. When you get that, good things happen.''

Naslund and Linden each scored goals during 5-on-3 advantages and Ruutu deflected in Vancouver's fifth goal on Marek Malik's shot from the point just three seconds left.

``We got contributions from a lot of guys scoring wise, and that's good to see,'' Naslund said. ``It's definitely very important to have the power play back on track.''

It was still working just fine at the start of the third as Vancouver's power play still had 1:58 left on a four-minute penalty to Washington's Jeff Halpern. That left plenty of space for Salo to beat Kolzig over the shoulder with a slapshot.

The Canucks have scored 10 power-play goals during the five-game win streak and outscored the Capitals 17-2 over their last three meetings.

``We just needed energy,'' Washington coach Glen Hanlon said. ``We feel that we have enough to be competitive if we play with structure and pursue pucks.

``We didn't get that tonight.''

There was very little structure to the start of Saturday's game as each team scored in the opening 1:16.

May put the Canucks ahead with a no-look spinning shot from the top of the crease through the legs of a screened Kolzig just 26 seconds in.

While Vancouver goalie Dan Cloutier never saw Lang's blind centring pass from the side boards that slid along the ice through traffic and into the goal tying the score.

Brookbank's first NHL broke the tie for good at 7:54 of the second.

Notes: Washington recalled defenceman Steve Eminger from Portland of the AHL to replace Jason Doig, suspended for two games by the NHL on Friday for kneeing Carolina's Kevyn Adams . . . Vancouver's Magnus Arvedson left the game with a knee injury with 2:29 left in the first. Arvedson, who had scored four goals in the last two games, stole the puck and was headed toward the net when Josef Bourmedienne dove trying to prevent the breakaway and landed on the Arvedson's right knee. Crawford said after the game that Arvedson would be flown back to Vancouver on Sunday to have the knee examined.

Arvedson's season in limbo

Magnus Arvedson arrived in Vancouver after a six seasons in Ottawa.

Sportsnet.ca - Magnus Arvedson's collision with Washington's Josef Bourmedienne has likely ended his year in Vancouver, Sportsnet sources have learned.

Arvedson was injured in Saturday's game with 2:29 left in the first.

Arvedson, who had scored four goals in the last two games, stole the puck and was headed toward the net when Josef Bourmedienne dove trying to prevent the breakaway and landed on the Arvedson's right knee.

He immediately left the game and did not return. Head coach Marc Crawford said in a post-game conference that more tests would be needed to determine the extent of the injury.

The Canucks have been involved in the recent trade rumour mill, so the injury may force GM Brian Burke to find a replacement.
