Canucks recall King, Bouck

Associated Press
2/2/2004

VANCOUVER (AP) - The Vancouver Canucks recalled forwards Jason King and Tyler Bouck from Manitoba of the American Hockey League on Sunday.

Both players were expected to join the team in New York for games against the Rangers on Monday, Islanders on Tuesday, and New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

Also, the Canucks sent forward Magnus Arvedson back to Vancouver after he injured his right knee during Saturday in Washington. Arvedson had seven goals in his last seven games.

King, 22, was the NHL's rookie of the month for November, and had 11 goals and five assists in the first two months of the season. He was sent down Wednesday after failing to score a goal in 21 games, but scored in two straight games with Manitoba.

Bouck, 23, was pointless in five games with Vancouver in mid-January. He has 10 goals and 21 points for Manitoba.

Canucks look to extend win streak to 6

Sports Ticker
2/2/2004

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Canucks try to extend their winning streak to a season-high six games on Monday when they continue a five-game road trip against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

The Canucks have won five consecutive games after losing three in a row for just the second time this season. They have not won six consecutive games since a 10-game run from November 9-30, 2002.

Vancouver improved to 2-0-0 on its longest road trip of the season with a 6-1 rout of the Washington Capitals on Saturday.

Markus Naslund, Trevor Linden and defenseman Sami Salo each had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who scored four consecutive power-play goals to end the game.

Defensemen Brent Sopel and Marek Malik had two assists as Vancouver went 4-for-7 with the man advantage and has 10 power-play goals during its winning streak.

The Canucks overcame the loss of left wing Magnus Arvedson, who left late in he first period with a knee injury and did not return.

New York was swept in a home-and-home series with the Buffalo Sabres after losing Saturday's finale on the road, 3-1.

Joel Bouchard scored the lone goal for the slumping Rangers, who have lost three in a row and seven of their last eight.

New York went scoreless in five power-play chances and is 0-for-16 with the man advantage in the last five games.

The Rangers have just one win in their last 10 games (1-7-2) and are trying to avoid losing a season-high four straight games for the second time this season.

Vancouver has won the last five meetings with New York since an 8-4 loss here on February 4, 1999.

Holik's pair stops streaking Canucks

Associated Press
2/2/2004

NEW YORK (AP) - Bobby Holik scored his second goal of the game with 2:41 remaining as the New York Rangers beat the surging Vancouver Canucks 4-3 on Monday night.

The Rangers entered on a three-game losing streak and had won only once in their previous 10 games (1-7-2), but they stopped the Canucks' five-game winning streak after squandering a two-goal lead in the third period.

Holik took a pass from Brian Leetch, who had three assists, and let a shot go from the right circle that beat Dan Cloutier.

Jaromir Jagr and Alex Kovalev also scored while Mike Dunham made 27 saves for the Rangers, 10th in the 15-team Eastern Conference.

The Canucks are the only NHL team with 30 victories. Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi scored seven minutes apart in the third period to draw Vancouver even.

Naslund joined Columbus' Rick Nash as the NHL's only 30-goal scorers this season and Brendan Morrison added a goal for the Canucks, who won 10 of their previous 11 road games.

Holik ended New York's power-play drought at 18 consecutive without a goal when he gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead with 8:19 left in the second. Jagr made a backhanded pass to Holik, who ripped in his 13th goal - first in nine games.

It was the Rangers' first power-play goal since Leetch's tally on Jan. 22. New York hadn't led since its previous victory a week earlier against Florida. The Rangers were outscored 8-3 during their three-game slide.

Kovalev made a play most expected more of when he was reacquired last year. The flashy but frustrating forward deftly kept the puck in the Vancouver zone in the waning seconds of a power play and in the second period.

Once Kovalev regained his balance and turned so he was facing the net, he stickhandled around Artem Chubarov, wound up at the top of the left circle, and rifled a shot past Cloutier with just 13.9 seconds left in the period.

Kovalev also scored for the first time in nine games.

Jagr atoned for an earlier error and scored his 18th of the season and second in five games since the Rangers traded for him.

He carried the puck through neutral ice and then found Martin Rucinsky with a backhand pass. Rucinsky carried the puck down and slid a pass in front that Jagr redirected behind Cloutier at 10:13 of the first to tie it 1-1.

Just over four minutes in, Jagr shot wide while Cloutier was diving back into position in an attempt to cover the open side of the net.

Morrison staked the Canucks to a 1-0 lead at 8:15 when the NHL's leading scorer, Naslund, chipped a loose puck into the slot to Morrison, who ripped a shot past Dunham.<

Notes: Rangers D Tom Poti sat out for the third time in eight games due to back spasms. New York recalled D Lawrence Nycholat from Hartford of the AHL and had him in the lineup. ... The Canucks were without LW Magnus Arvedson, who returned to Vancouver after injuring his knee Saturday at Washington. ... The Canucks, 1-for-6 on the power play, have scored 11 man-advantage goals the past five games.

Arvedson could be out at least six weeks

TSN.ca Staff
2/3/2004

Vancouver's Magnus Arvedson could be out a minimum of six weeks with what the Canucks are calling a knee sprain. The team has not ruled out the possibility that Arvedsson may require surgery.

Arvedson left Saturday's game against the Washington Capitals with 2:29 left in the first period. Arvedson, who had scored four goals in the previous two games, stole the puck and was headed toward the net when Josef Bourmedienne dove to prevent the breakaway and landed on the Arvedson's right knee.

Arvedson was flown back to Vancouver on Sunday to have the knee examined.

Defenceman Ed Jovanovski remains out of the Canucks lineup with a shoulder injury. He is not expected to play for at least another two weeks.

The Canucks beat Washington to extend a five-game winning streak, but lost the next night to the New York Rangers.

How can a team whose never won the cup possibly deserve a thread this long?
Or is there a bunch of freaky sex videos linked somewhere in the middle pages of this thread that I'll never find?
