NS... i use to at least respect the Nucks (yes im an AVs fan). But players like him drag a whole team down, granted the 99 mins of penalties didn't help either. And he's suppose to be one of the leaders of the team....some leader. But as much as that game sucked you gotta question the reffing. This years been the worst year in reffing i have ever seen, and i think its the cause of a lot of this sh8t and prolly won't help the rest of the season either. Maybe if Moore had been called in the prior AV's/Nucks game that would of satisfied Crawford, in the least. Instead May went out and put a bounty on Moores head and right in front of the media. I think he should be fined right along w/ Bertuzzi for inciting unnecessary violence or sompin.

It doesn't matter if the ice did the damage, cause it was Bertuzzis action that initiated it, just like how some players don't mean to high stick, but it happened anyway and they get punished for it.

If you think bert only should get 2 games for this, man your waay off. Domi got 8 games for elbowing niedermayer and was the right call. If you think 2 is enough, man... you have to take off your homer hat for now.

Yeah........ your right........... when I said that I a bit pissed at the time. Now that I have had a chance to cool down a bit I think he will get 8-10 games....... not more then the season (13 games left)

As for Domi........ he got that 8 games not only for hte hit but for his reputation I think.

Um.......... Crawford never put a bounty on anyone. It was Brad May who said it.......... I don't know if he ment it or not (since he referenced Slap Shot). But like Isaid earlier......... Bert did it because of his frfiendship with Markus ........... not for some "bouunty".

Avs rout Canucks in ugly game

Canadian Press
3/9/2004

VANCOUVER (CP) - Milan Hejduk scored three times while Joe Sakic had a goal and three assists as the Colorado Avalanche whipped the Vancouver Canuck 9-2 Monday night in a fight-filled battle for first place in the NHL's Northwest Division.

The game turned ugly at 8:41 of the third period.

Vancouver right-winger Todd Bertuzzi sucker-punched Colorado's Steve Moore from behind, then fell on top of him, driving his face into the ice. Moore was left laying in a pool of blood while all the players on the ice except the goalies paired off.

Moore was loaded on a stretcher and taken off the ice. Officials quickly ushered Bertuzzi off the ice and into the Canuck dressing room. He was assessed a match penalty.

As the game wound down, fans threw a cup of beer into the Colorado bench. After the game a huge fight broke out in the stands.

On Feb. 16 Moore levelled Vancouver's Markus Naslund with a hit that resulted in the Canuck captain missing three games with a concussion. No penalty was called on that play.

Colorado broke open the game in the first period, scoring five times, four coming in a span of 1:39. The win was just the third in 12 games for the Avalanche but moved them to within three points of the Detroit Red Wings for first overall in the Western Conference.

More importantly, Colorado moved three points ahead of Vancouver atop the Northwest Division standings. Both teams have 13 games left and won't face one another for the remainder of the regular season.

Two of Hejduk's goals came on the power play while Paul Kariya scored shorthanded. Steve Konowalchuk, Darby Hendrickson, Moore and Derek Morris, on the power play, also scored for the Avs (35-17-12-5) who have 87 points. The win comes on the heels of the Avs 7-1 loss to Calgary in Denver on Sunday.

Brad May had a busy night for the Canucks. He scored twice, fought Colorado's enforcer Peter Worrell two times in the first period, and was given a misconduct for challenging Colorado goalie David Aebischer after his second goal.

Vancouver's Trevor Linden also collected two assists, to give him 675 points to move past Stan Smyl as the Canucks all-time leading scorer. Smyl had 673 points.

A win would have moved Vancouver past Colorado into first place in the Northwest Division. Instead, the Canucks dropped to 36-20-8-4 and three points behind the Avalanche.

The first period featured four fights.

May gave up 37 pounds and six inches in his battles with Worrell. Matt Cooke also dropped the gloves with Moore.

The Canucks set a dubious franchise record for the four fastest goals allowed. The pervious mark was when the Winnipeg Jets struck four times in 2:16 back in 1984.

Vancouver goalie Dan Cloutier was chased out of the game at 15:31 of the first after giving up four goals. The Avalanche made it 5-0 with their first shot on backup Johan Hedberg.

It was the third meeting in 17 days between the two Western Conference rivals.

The Canucks beat the Avs 1-0 in Denver on Feb. 16. The teams battled to a 5-5 draw Wednesday.

Notes: Defenceman Ed Jovanovski practised with the Canucks on Monday for the first time since separating his shoulder Jan. 25 . . . The Avs won their ninth consecutive division championship last spring, sneaking past Vancouver on the last day of the regular season . . . Heading into Monday, the Canuck defence had scored 43 goals and collected 99 assists for 142 points.

Linden sets Canucks scoring mark

Canadian Press
3/8/2004

VANCOUVER (CP) - Trevor Linden picked up a pair of assists in the second period against the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night to become the leading scorer in the 34-year history of the Vancouver Canucks.

The first assist gave Linden 674 regular-season career points on 290 goals and 484 assists, one point more than Stan Smyl who retired after the 1990-91 campaign.

Linden earned the assists on goals 52 seconds apart by Brad May. They were the first two goals of the game for Vancouver and cut into a 5-0 Colorado lead.

On the assist that set the record, Linden dumped the puck to the end boards where it was retrieved by Matt Cooke, who fired a pass to May at 7:24 of the period.

They were timely points for Linden, who was enduring a 12-game points drought _ his longest offensive slump of the season. He last picked up a point Feb. 5 with a power-play goal in a 4-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

The record-setting points were followed by a standing ovation. A brief video tribute followed during a TV timeout.

Smyl, who now coaches the Canucks' Manitoba Moose AHL farm club, had 262 goals and 411 assists for 673 points. He has held the Canucks' career scoring record since passing Thomas Gradin in 1987.

Linden, who turns 34 on April 11 and is in his 16th NHL season, was mentored by Smyl when he entered the league and later followed him as captain of the Canucks.

The six-foot-four, 220 pound native of Medicine Hat, Alta., was the Canucks' first pick and second-overall in the 1988 entry draft.

His record-breaking point came in his 906th game as a Canuck, also a club record. He reached Smyl's 673 points in two fewer games but needed 10 more to break it.

Smyl played all his games in a Vancouver uniform and his retired No. 12 hangs from the GM Place rafters.

Now in his 13th season with the Canucks, Linden was traded by Mike Keenan to the New York Islanders in 1997-98 and later played for the Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitals.

He was reacquired from Washington on Nov. 10, 2001, by Vancouver GM Brian Burke, who had earlier fired Keenan.

Linden, who led the Canucks to a Game 7 Stanley Cup final loss to the New York Rangers in 1994, entered the season as the club's leading scorer in the playoffs with (32-56) 88 in 99 post-season games.

While the spotlight now shines on Canuck stars Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi, Linden has quietly been putting together solid seasons in a defensive role.

Last year he had his best campaign in four years with 19 goals and 22 assists for 41 points.

He averages more than 16 minutes of ice time a game and entered the game Monday with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points this season.

McKenzie: Bertuzzi's actions indefensible

TSN.ca Staff
3/9/2004

Todd Bertuzzi's hit on Colorado's Steve Moore has already drawn the attention of the NHL. There is an in-person disciplinary hearing scheduled for Bertuzzi and NHL executive vice president and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell on Wednesday at 9:00am et/6:00am pt in Toronto.

Gary Bettman will not be involved in the decision-making process, because if there is an appeal for whatever Campbell may hand down to Bertuzzi then Bettman would hear it.

Let's put this in perspective and go back to the original incident that caused so much bad blood - Steve Moore's hit on Canucks' captain Markus Naslund. The Canucks were of the opinion that it was a head-hunting hit - a cheap shot that was targeting Naslund to take him out of the game. Other people in hockey did not see it as nearly as severe.

Whatever you thought about Moore's hit on Naslund, there is not way you could possibly justify what Bertuzzi did to Moore on Monday night. Bertuzzi literally stalked Moore up and down the ice, sucker-punched him in the face and drove his face into the ice. It really was a sickening sight.

You can talk about hockey and what kind of game it is with retribution and with the supposed problems with instigator rule all you like, but that has to be put aside here. What we had on Monday was an elite player - Todd Bertuzzi - stalking another player and virtually assaulting him on the ice. It is sickening and indefensible.

I don't think the fact that Bertuzzi is a marquee player will make any difference in what kind of suspension he gets. When you start to compare it to past incidents, people are obviously going to go back to the Marty McSorley and Donald Brashear stick-swinging incident in Vancouver. In many respects some people would say that these two incidents' were not that different at all, with McSorley going after Brashear from behind. That hit occurred on February 21st of that year and McSorley was suspended for the balance of the season and right through to the next calendar year.

Another episode that people are going to talk about is when Matt Johnson of the Los Angeles Kings sucker-punched Jeff Beukeboom. That blow effectively led to the end of Beukeboom's career. Johnson received a 12-game suspension for that. The Vancouver Canucks, for what it is worth, have 13 games left in their regular season.

What is Bertuzzi going to get? I guess we are going to find out after Wednesday's hearing. There is no doubt, however, that this is a very serious case. In my mind, Bertuzzi is gone for the balance of the regular season. The big question to be asked is how many playoff games - if any - will he miss.

Cheers,
Aquaman

I truly hope they take him out for the rest of the season and tack on a large fine. That crap seriously takes hockey to a lower level and the league would be better off without him. I guess we'll find out tomorrow, but whoever said earlier that he would only get 5 games. PSSSH!

It is too bad Bertuzzi did what he did. It reminds me of what Mcsorley did a few years back. From behind and completely gutless. What Bertuzzi did in those few seconds just lowered the NHL in a paramount way. I play hockey and my son plays hockey and we both love a good fight now and again. But to stalk someone and pull there jersey, not once but twice to get to them as they are skating away and to top it off then to sucker puch the guy and ram his face into the ice with the weight of your 245 lb. frame is just a disgrace. Bertuzzi is simply a goon.

Personally, I think this is worse than the McSorley incident, as this was obviously pre-meditated, with an absolute intent to injure. He should be suspended for the rest of the season, playoffs included. Completely gutless, to me, Bertuzzi now is nothing but a thug. :disgust:

Francis asked to waive no-trade clause

TSN.ca Staff
3/9/2004

The Vancouver Canucks and the Toronto Maple Leafs have asked Ron Francis if he would be prepared to waive his no-trade clause, TSN has learned.

The Carolina Hurricanes veteran forward is considering whether to waive the clause. Once he informs general manager Jim Rutherford of his decision, it's expected he'll attempt to make a deal with either the Maple Leafs or Canucks.

Francis, who has four points in his last five games, has 10 goals and 30 points in 68 games with the Hurricanes.
