Canucks take aim at Stars

The Sports Network
3/18/2004

Time is running out on the Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars as they try to win their respective divisions.

With just nine games remaining for each team, the Canucks and Stars continue their pursuit of first place when they play the first of two meetings between the clubs in the next 10 days.

Vancouver is in second in the Northwest Division, trailing Colorado by five points. Dallas, meanwhile, is three points behind San Jose in the Pacific Division.

The Stars blew a golden opportunity to move within one point of the Sharks on Tuesday night, allowing San Jose to score two goals in the final 1:37 and settling for a 3-3 tie.

Dallas extended its franchise-record home unbeaten streak to 15 games (11-0-4), but it was just a consolation after it carried a 3-0 lead into the third period.

``This feels like a loss,'' Dallas forward Bill Guerin said. ``What a way to give away points. It's brutal.''

Dallas has just one win in its last five contests following a nine-game unbeaten streak.

``We threw away two points, but there's still games left and we've got to learn from our mistakes tonight and move on,'' said Stars center Jason Arnott, who had two goals. ``We definitely screwed up and we know it.''

Vancouver also wasted an opportunity to pick up ground Tuesday as it allowed the tying goal with 22 seconds remaining in a 2-2 draw with Nashville. Colorado lost earlier in the evening to Montreal.

With the tie, Vancouver stayed three points up on Dallas in the race for home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

``Look on the bright side of it, we picked up a point on Colorado tonight and we didn't lose a point on anyone we're chasing,'' Canucks coach Marc Crawford said.

Dallas has won both meetings with Vancouver this season, and is 5-1 in the last six games in the series.

The Canucks and Stars conclude their season series March 27 in Vancouver.

Stars stay hot at home; blank Canucks

Associated Press
3/18/2004

DALLAS (AP) - Jason Arnott and Bill Guerin each had a goal and two assists, and the Dallas Stars stretched their franchise record, home-unbeaten streak to 16 games with a 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.

Marty Turco made 20 saves for his 20th career shutout and Philippe Boucher also scored for the Stars in a potential first-round playoff preview. Vancouver is fourth in the Western Conference, one point ahead of fifth-place Dallas.

Dallas has eight games left, five on the road, including a contest at Vancouver on March 27. The Canucks have eight remaining, three on the road.

The Stars have won all three meetings with the Canucks this season and are 6-1 against Vancouver the last two seasons.

The Canucks are 1-3-1-0 and have scored just seven goals since the season-ending suspension of Todd Bertuzzi.

Dallas continued the longest home unbeaten streak in the league (12-0-4) since the Detroit Red Wings put together a 19-game run from Dec. 31, 2000, to April 7, 2001. The Stars' last home loss was Jan. 10 against Colorado.

The Stars bounced back from Tuesday's 3-3 tie with San Jose when Dallas allowed three goals in the final 6:03 to squander an opportunity to pull within a point of the first-place Sharks in the Pacific Division.

Boucher got the only first-period goal, scoring from low in the right circle off a setup by Arnott at 12:23.

Arnott made it 2-0 from the slot at 2:43 of the second period, his 20th.

Guerin knocked in the rebound of his own shot for his 32nd goal after a pass from Arnott as the Stars extended their advantage to 3-0 at 12:49 of the second period.

Canucks coach Marc Crawford pulled goaltender Dan Cloutier after two periods, sending in Johan Hedberg for the final 20 minutes. Cloutier stopped 14 of 17 shots.

Notes: Turco is 17-3-1 in his career against Canadian teams. ... Boucher set a career high with his eighth goal. ... Arnott has six straight seasons of at least 20 goals. ... Vancouver is 1-for-30 on the power play in its last eight games.

Struggling Canucks visit Blackhawks

The Sports Network
3/19/2004

Though the Vancouver Canucks made significant upgrades at the trade deadline, they can't hide from the fact that they miss Todd Bertuzzi.

The Canucks will try to rediscover their offense when they travel to Chicago to face the lowly Blackhawks.

Vancouver has scored just seven goals in winning one of five games (1-2-2) since Bertuzzi was suspended for the rest of the season for sucker-punching Colorado's Steve Moore on March 8.

The Canucks managed just 20 shots in Thursday's 3-0 loss in Dallas.

"We wanted to come in here, get a win and pick up two points, but we didn't play well enough to do that," Canucks goalie Dan Cloutier said.

Before his suspension, Bertuzzi had 60 points in 69 games, including 16 power-play points. Newly acquired Geoff Sanderson and Martin Rucinsky have combined for three goals and two assists in five games since coming over in separate trades prior.

But the Canucks have looked lost offensively, especially on the power play as they have converted just one of their last 30 opportunities, spanning eight games.

The Canucks blew an opportunity to make up ground on first-place Colorado in the Northwest Division as the Avalanche lost 2-0 in Ottawa on Thursday.

Johan Hedberg was in goal for the final 20 minutes on Thursday after Cloutier left with an injury after stopping 14 of 17 shots over the first two periods.

The Canucks would not be more specific about the injury to Cloutier, who will not start Friday at Chicago.

"It's not a severe injury, but it's enough to keep him out of the lineup," coach Marc Crawford said.

The Blackhawks are coming off a 3-2 loss to Carolina on Wednesday.

Tuumo Ruutu and Mark Bell scored for the Blackhawks, 1-6-2-1 in their last 10 games.

Goaltender Michael Leighton, who finished with 46 saves, is winless in his last seven games (0-6-1).

"I felt good, but the bottom line is we didn't win," Leighton said. "It didn't matter how I played."

Ruutu has nine goals and 11 assists in his last 14 games. Bell's goal was his first in six games and only his second in 12.

Chicago defenseman Steve Poapst returned Wednesday after missing 29 games because of a concussion, and was a minus-2 in a little less than 23 minutes.

Canucks' Cloutier day-to-day

Canadian Press
3/19/2004

CHICAGO (CP) - Vancouver Canucks goalkeeper Dan Cloutier is listed as day-to-day with a ``lower body injury,'' the NHL team said Friday.

The Canucks called up Alex Auld from the AHL's Manitoba Moose to replace Cloutier.

Cloutier, who has had groin problems in the past, was pulled after two periods of the Canucks' 3-0 loss in Dallas on Thursday night. Johan Hedberg went in for the third.

``It's not a severe injury, but it's enough to keep him out of the lineup,'' coach Marc Crawford said after the game.

Auld is 2-1-2 in the NHL this season with a 2.10 goals-against average and .926 save percentage.

Arnason's trick downs Canucks in OT

Canadian Press
3/19/2004

CHICAGO (AP) - A less-than-perfect pass paid off for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Tyler Arnason scored his third goal of the game, 1:44 into overtime to give the Blackhawks a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

The goal came after Bryan Berard threw the puck toward the goalmouth from the left corner. The puck struck goalie Alexander Auld and popped up before Arnason batted it in for his first hat trick this season and second of his career.

``I was just looking to get a bounce from a bad angle,'' Berard said. ``I didn't know I had anyone with me. The one thing I've learned this year is that when you put the puck on net, good things happen and Arnie made a great play.''

The goal gave Arnason 20 goals in his second full NHL season. It also gave Chicago its second win in 11 games (2-6-2-1).

``The puck hit (Auld's) goal stick, it kind of flipped up and I just swung at it,'' Arnason said.

The hat trick was the first for the Blackhawks this season. Jim Vandermeer also scored for Chicago.

Matt Cooke scored a goal and set up Trevor Linden's score early in the third period as the Canucks rallied from a 3-1 deficit.

``You have to play 60 minutes in this league to be successful, whether it's the Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings or Chicago Blackhawks,'' Cooke said. ``We know that, but didn't do that.''

Brendan Morrison also scored for Vancouver, 1-4-2 in its last seven games and 1-3-2 since the suspension of Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi.

Blackhawks goalie Michael Leighton stopped 32 shots to end his seven-game winless streak (0-6-1).

Johan Hedberg started in goal for Vancouver, but was pulled at 6:53 of the second after allowing three goals on 14 shots. Auld made 19 saves in relief.

``It was good we recaptured the momentum by having the other goalie come in and play well,'' Canucks coach Marc Crawford said. ``It's hard to explain, but goalie changes do sometimes shift momentum. Alex played well.''

Morrison's power-play goal with 2:57 left in the first period made it 1-0. He scored from the left side of the crease after Brent Sopel's drive from the top of the slot sailed wide, bounced off the back boards and directly to him.

Arnason's first goal, on the power play at 1:37 of the second, tied it. Hedberg tried to clear the puck from behind the net, but it struck Chicago's Eric Daze and deflected to Arnason in front of the goal.

Arnason struck again just under three minutes later to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. Hedberg blocked Arnason's point-blank deflection of Tuomo Ruutu's centring pass. However, the puck squirted away from Hedberg, and Arnason tapped it in.

Vandermeer made it 3-1 during a power play at 6:53 of the second on a screened drive from the top of the slot.

After the goal, Canucks coach Marc Crawford pulled Hedberg and replaced him with Auld. Auld was recalled earlier Friday from Manitoba of the AHL to replace injured Dan Cloutier.

Cooke cut it to 3-2 with a power-play goal with 6:18 left in the second. He scored from the edge of the crease after taking a perfect pass from Daniel Sedin in the corner.

Linden tied it 3-3 at 2:30 of the third.

Notes: Cloutier missed the game due to a hip injury sustained in a loss at Dallas on Thursday. He's day-to-day. ... Canucks D Ed Jovanovski, out with a shoulder injury since Jan. 25, is on the road trip. He's missed 25 games. ... Arnason has seven goals and nine assists in 12 games. ... Blackhawks rookie TW Tuomo Ruutu assisted on Arnason's second goal and has nine goals and eight assists in 12 games. ... The Blackhawks' power play is 16-for-45 the past 11 games.

Jovo returns as Canucks host Jackets

The Sports Network
3/21/2004

(Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks try to halt a four-game winless slide tonight when they welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to GM Place.

Vancouver enters the day tied with Dallas for fourth in the Western Conference with 89 points. The Canucks are four points behind the Colorado Avalanche for first in the Northwest Division chase.

On Friday the Canucks suffered a 4-3 overtime loss in Chicago. Tyler Arnason scored 1:44 into overtime to post his second career hat trick and give the Blackhawks the win.

Brendan Morrison, Matt Cooke and Trevor Linden scored for the Canucks, who suffered their second straight loss and are winless in their last four (0-2-1-1).

Starting goaltender Dan Cloutier missed the game with a strained hip flexor, and replacement Johan Hedberg allowed three goals on 15 shots before being pulled in the second period. Cloutier is day-to-day.

The good news on the injury front is that the Canucks will have Ed Jovanovski and Henrik Sedin back in the lineup. Jovanovski suffered a third-degree shoulder separation Jan. 25 at GM Place when he got tangled up with Predators forward Martin Erat, fell to the ice and slid heavily into the end boards. After initial fears that Jovanovski's season may be in jeopardy, he methodically rehabbed the shoulder.

Vancouver, 0-2-2 in its last four home games, opens a four-game stand tonight and will welcome Los Angeles to town on Wednesday.

Columbus, meanwhile, has lost its last eight games, including Thursday's 2-0 setback in Calgary. Miikka Kiprusoff posted 23 saves for his third shutout of the season and Matthew Lombardi and Jarome Iginla each added goals to lead the Flames.

Marc Denis turned in a solid effort between the pipes with 33 saves for Columbus. The Blue Jackets are in last place in the Western Conference -- three points behind the Chicago Blackhawks.

Columbus has just two wins (2-13-3) in its last 18 road games.

The Blue Jackets will host Minnesota on Wednesday.

Vancouver is 2-1 against Columbus this season, and 10-3-2 all-time in the series. The Jackets have lost six of the seven meetings at GM Place.
