Just came back from the game, it was awesome! There were actually quite a few Calgary fans in the stands, which made it that much better!

Morrison caps Canucks' rally over Flames

Canadian Press
1/8/2006 2:44:16 AM

VANCOUVER (CP) - Brendan Morrison almost celebrated too early.

For a split-second he thought the game had ended on Sami Salo's shot in overtime, then found he still had some work to do when Salo only grazed the post.

"I thought Sami scored," Morrison said Saturday after his ninth goal of the season ended a wild 4-3 Vancouver Canucks victory over the Calgary Flames.

"My hands were up (in celebration) and (the puck) came off the end boards and hopped over (Rhett) Warrener's skate and stick. I thought it was going to hop over my stick."

But it didn't and Morrison, who began the game with his mother, grandmother and two of his three children taking the ceremonial face-off, ended it by sweeping the puck into an open net.

All four Canuck goals came on the power play as Vancouver halted a four-game Calgary winning streak.

It was the first Canuck win over the Flames after four one-goal losses.

"It's fun playing these guys," Morrison said of the Flames who surrendered a 3-1 third-period lead.

"So much excitement, emotion in the games. They're a physical team and (that) makes us battle hard."

Salo, who now has scored eight of his nine goals with the man advantage, pounded two pucks behind Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff who surrendered the game-tying goal with 30 seconds remaining and the Canucks enjoying a two-man advantage.

They also lifted goalie Alex Auld for an additional attacker.

"We had so much momentum with those power plays," said Salo who received perfect set-ups from defence partner Nolan Baumgartner on both goals. "That was the key."

The Canucks, who were playing their third game in four nights, worked hard for the win and took advantage of 10 power plays.

"It just shows the team mentality that we had going into tonight's game," said Salo. "We just wanted to go and win."

The game was tied 1-1 early in the third period but Dion Phaneuf and Jarome Iginla scored 44 seconds apart for a 3-1 Flames lead.

Anson Carter, with his 15th of the season, buried a Henrik Sedin rebound to draw Vancouver to within a goal. Stephane Yelle opened the scoring for Calgary which went 2-for-7 with the man advantage.

The victory, the first in seven games for Vancouver against a Northwest Division club, saw the Flames slip to 25-12-5.

The Canucks (23-14-5) won their second in a row to climb to within four points of division-leading Calgary.

Vancouver also moved into second place, a point ahead of the Edmonton Oilers but are still a dismal 6-10-4 against Northwest foes.

"We obviously didn't agree with a few things," Iginla, who got the game's only even-strength goal, said of the penalty calls against his club.

"To give a team a 5-on-3 for that long (with the goalie pulled 1:18 from) the end of the game and then a 4-on-3 in overtime ... they're a skilled group and they were able to capitalize."

Kiprusoff, who was well out of position on the winning goal, said the Flames had the game under control until the rash of third-period penalties.

"It's not easy for the refs but I still think there were some weird calls."

Notes: The game was the first of four on the road for the Flames. Vancouver entertains the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday. ... After that, they are on GM Place ice only twice in 26 days. ... The Flames recalled defenceman Richie Regehr from Omaha of the American Hockey League. ... Vancouver defenceman Ed Jovanovski missed his fifth game with a groin injury. ... LW Jason King has been assigned to the Manitoba Moose, Vancouver's AHL farm team, after being out 10 months with a concussion.

Maple Leafs go head-to-head with Canucks

Canadian Press
1/10/2006 9:18:58 AM

VANCOUVER (CP) - Winning back-to-back NHL games for the first time in almost three weeks has restored some confidence to the Vancouver Canucks.

That credence will be tested Tuesday when the Canucks face the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"We're not out of the woods," forward Anson Carter said after the Canucks practised Monday.

"I don't think we'll be out of the woods until we get back on top of the division."

Carter scored his 15th goal of the season on a power play in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win against the Calgary Flames. That came after the Canucks snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Chicago Thursday.

The Christmas season didn't bring a lot of cheer for the Canucks. They started December with a four-game win streak, then won just one of their next nine games.

That lump of coal knocked Vancouver out of first place in the tough Northwest Division and sent the Canucks tumbling down the Western Conference standings.

Heading into Monday night's games the Canucks were second in the Northwest Division with 51 points - four back of Calgary - from a 23-14-5 record. That left them sixth in the conference.

"All year we've been the hunted," said Carter, who has joined with twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin on Vancouver's most productive line.

"Now we get to hunt a little bit. Even though winning two games relieves a little bit of the stress immediately, there is still lots of work to be done. We are still trying to focus on improving as a hockey club."

The Leafs roll into town having won seven of their last eight games.

Heading into Monday night Toronto also had 51 points from a 24-15-3 record, leaving them third in the Northeast Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference.

The Leafs will be without Bryan McCabe, the top scoring defenceman in league. McCabe will miss the game with a groin injury.

Defenceman Tomas Kaberle laughed when asked if the Canucks recent problems make them an easy target.

"They are dangerous," said Kaberle, who is third in Leaf scoring with 34 points, including 28 assists.

"Sure they have been losing a few games but I don't think they've been playing that bad. They have lots of jump right now."

Toronto's Chad Kilger, who has three goals in the last three games, said the Leafs are not underestimating the Canucks.

"They have a lot of speed," said Kilger, who has seven goals and 13 points in 39 games.

"We know they play an aggressive style and put a lot of pressure on the puck. We have to be ready to play our game."<

Coach Pat Quinn said the Leafs need to play better against the Canucks than they did the Oilers.

"We didn't play real well in Edmonton," he said.

"We need to not be turning over the puck like we did and pay a lot more attention to our positioning."

What the Canuck need is more scoring from their best players.

Captain Markus Naslund has one goal in his last five games. Centre Brendan Morrison's game-winner Saturday was just his second goal in seven games.

Bruising forward Todd Bertuzzi hasn't scored in eight games.

"It would be nice to put the puck in the net but I've been doing a lot of other good things for my linemates," said Bertuzzi.

"You have to be positive and keep working on it."

Naslund thinks the team might have turned a corner.

"It's weird how a win affect you," he said.

"We're feeling a lot better about ourselves. Sometimes it's really tough to get out of a slump. You try to do the right things but for some reason it's not going your way. We finally got a couple of wins here and it gives us a fresh outlook."

Canucks grind out win over Leafs

Canadian Press
1/11/2006 1:59:48 AM

VANCOUVER (CP) - Scoring his first NHL goal was a thrill for rookie Alexandre Burrows.

Scoring it against the Toronto Maple Leafs made it even sweeter.

Burrows, playing in just his fifth NHL game, had a goal and an assist while goaltender Alex Auld made 35 saves as the Vancouver Canucks ground out a nail-biting 4-3 win over the Leafs Tuesday night.

"Growing up I was a Montreal Canadiens fan," said Burrows, who the Canucks called up Jan. 2 from their AHL Manitoba Moose farm team.

"It was a big rivalry against the Leafs."

It wasn't a night for finesse as the grinders took centre stage for the Canucks. Instead of ballroom dancing it was a mosh pit, which gave a fourth-liner like Burrows a chance to shine.

Burrows' linemate Ryan Kesler also had two assists, his first points in 11 games.

"We just wanted to get a good forecheck, get pressure on their defencemen and some good hits," said Burrows, who also assisted on Jarkko Ruutu's first-period goal.

"Every time you get a goal it's a plus. We're really happy we contributed tonight."

Hardnosed Matt Cooke and Anson Carter, on a third-period power play, also scored for the Canucks.

The win was Vancouver's third in a row and moved the Canucks to just two points back of Calgary for first place in the Northwest Division.

Auld, who faced 30 shots over the last two periods, liked the work effort he saw in front of him.

"I thought we had some great contributions from the bottom of our forward line up," said Auld, who was named the game's first star.

"To see Burrows get his first goal is great. "

After looking shaky in the first period Auld was like a rock for the rest of the game as the Leafs came at him in waves.

"I saw a lot of pucks," said Auld, who twice made pad saves on Mats Sundin and blocked Tie Domi who had been left alone on his doorstep.

"That was the key. The guys did a great job of clearing bodies out from in front of me and there weren't too many rebound chances."

Chad Kilger had a goal and assist for the Leafs (24-16-3, 51 points), who lost for the second time in nine games. Alexander Khavanov and Alex Steen, on the power play, also scored.

Toronto outshot Vancouver 38-19 and carried the play for the last half of the game, but lost for the second time in three games during their swing through Western Canada.

"We worked hard tonight," said Sundin, who had five shots on goal.

"We certainly had a good enough effort to win the hockey game and created enough chances. Some nights it doesn't turn out the way you want."

Carlo Colaiacovo, who replaced the injured Bryan McCabe, said Auld was the difference in the game.

"Give credit to their goalie," said Colaiacovo, who hip-checked Todd Bertuzzi to the ice in the second period:

"He played really well. We're happy with our hard work so it's something to build on for next game."

The Leaf nation was out in full force among the sellout crowd of 18,630 for Toronto's only visit of the season. Chants of "Go Leafs go" were quickly countered with a chorus of "Leafs suck."

Ruutu, who has a career-high seven goals on the season, said it was a strange game to play.

"It was a weird game," he said. "There wasn't a lot of flow."

Vancouver improved its record to 24-14-5 for 53 points.

Burrows' goal wasn't a classic but it still counted.

He fired a shot into a crowd that Leaf goaltender Ed Belfour stopped, but the puck sailed high into the air and landed behind him in the net.

Kilger opened the scoring at 4:41 of the first while killing the game's initial penalty.

Canuck defenceman Sami Salo had his shot from the point blocked. Kilger picked up the puck at the blue-line and skated into the Vancouver zone. He fought off Salo with one hand, then launched a spin-around shot that beat Auld on the far side.

It was Kilger's fourth goal in as many games, coming on Toronto's first shot on goal.

NOTES - Canuck defenceman Ed Jovanovski missed his sixth consecutive game with a groin injury . . . Right-winger Richard Park left the game in the second period favouring his right leg and didn't return . . . Carter used to play street hockey against former Leaf goalie Mike Palmateer growing up in Toronto . . . The Canucks head out on the road for games in New Jersey, Long Island and Pittsburgh.

Brodeur, Devils shut out Canucks

Associated Press
1/14/2006 12:50:47 AM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The NHL's new rules were supposed to make defensive-minded teams like the New Jersey Devils obsolete this season.

The holdovers are having the last laugh.

The Devils, playing the stifling style that carried them to three Stanley Cup championships, blanked the Vancouver Canucks 3-0 on Friday night and earned their fifth straight win.

Martin Brodeur made 26 saves for his second consecutive shutout. Brodeur, who defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 on Monday, posted his 78th career shutout and third in five games.

"The rules are there and there is a lot more flow to the game," Brodeur said. "If we are able to play this way and not take a lot of penalties, you'll see this more and more from our team. It's not just me. All the guys are excited that we are able to shut down good teams."

Brian Gionta scored twice in the third period and Viktor Kozlov also had a goal as the Devils got all their offence on the power play to end the Canucks' three-game winning streak.

"We're beating good teams now and we're starting to roll," Gionta said. "We're playing the hockey we know how to play. We're getting back to the Devil way."

Kozlov broke the scoreless tie at 2:31 when he took a pass from Sergei Brylin and curled into the left circle to beat Alex Auld with a shot that slipped inside the near post.

"Once they scored on the power play, I don't think we mounted much after that," Canucks coach Marc Crawford said. "We were playing a stingy road game and I thought we'd rise to the challenge of the third period, but that first goal seemed to take all the wind out of our sails."

The Devils' power play clicked again as Gionta scored at 6:38. Scott Gomez, skating behind the Vancouver net, fed the onrushing Gionta a well-timed pass. Gomez has points in eight straight games, with eight goals and nine assists in that span.

Gionta closed out the scoring with his team-leading 25th goal, knocked into an empty net with 1:53 remaining.

The Canucks outshot the Devils 13-11 in the first period. Brodeur made good stops on Henrik Sedin's close-in shot and Mattias Ohlund's power-play slap shot to set the pattern for the rest of the game.

"When you get a chance against that team, you have to score," Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi said. "You're not going to get many. They are very sound defensively."

Chances diminished in the second period as New Jersey outshot Vancouver 7-6.

Notes: Devils LW Patrik Elias missed the game with a cold. Elias was one of New Jersey's best players recently with two goals and eight points in his first four games this season. Elias missed 39 contests while recovering from hepatitis. ... With Alexander Mogilny assigned to Albany of the AHL, the Devils recalled RW Aleksander Suglobov from their minor league affiliate. Mogilny scored the tiebreaking goal in his AHL debut Friday, giving Albany a 2-1 victory over Rochester.

Bertuzzi nets hat trick in Canucks rout

Canadian Press
1/14/2006 10:54:22 PM

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Todd Bertuzzi stuck it to the New York Islanders again, as if they weren't down enough.

Bertuzzi, a former Islanders' first-round pick, scored three goals to reach 500 NHL points and lead the Vancouver Canucks to an 8-1 victory Saturday night.

He scored twice on Vancouver's first three shots en route to his fifth career hat trick and helped chase goalie Rick DiPietro.

The good feeling the Islanders generated Thursday night in interim coach Brad Shaw's NHL debut was lost quickly as the Canucks built a three-goal lead in the first 11 minutes. Vancouver scored three more goals in the second period, two against DiPietro and one against Wade Dubielewicz - nine seconds after he came in.

"Bert was dominant especially early on when it mattered most," said Alex Auld, who earned first-star honours by making 36 saves. "You could tell it was an inspired effort."

Shaw, who will coach the team the rest of the season, led the Islanders over Calgary on Thursday just hours after predecessor Steve Stirling was fired and general manager Mike Milbury said he would step down once a replacement is found.

New York lost for the ninth time in 11 games. It was the Islanders' worst defensive effort of the season and Vancouver's best on offence.

"We played Calgary with emotion and desire, and we didn't have any of that tonight," forward Mark Parrish said. "Mentally, either we weren't prepared or we weren't thinking out there. This theme is getting old."

If the score wasn't bad enough, the bulk of the damage was done by Bertuzzi, who had his second three-goal game since returning from a 17-month suspension for punching former Colorado forward Steve Moore in the head.

Bertuzzi, the Islanders' top pick in 1993, was traded to Vancouver during his third season in what is widely considered one of Milbury's worst deals in his decade-long tenure. New York received Trevor Linden, who spent one-plus seasons with the Islanders and is now back with the Canucks.

"Obviously there is still something there from what happened way in the past but it's not something that I think about," said Bertuzzi, who has 213 goals and 501 points.

The 14,203 fans in the stands were left to unleash nonspecific boos at their unproductive team. With Stirling already fired and Milbury on his way out, there was no remaining villain to chant against. They resorted to cheers of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" in the third period.

DiPietro didn't have much chance on several of the goals he allowed in his second game back after missing five with a knee injury. In addition to Bertuzzi's two, the U.S. Olympic goalie also allowed one to Anson Carter at 10:39 of the first.

"We're on a downward slide, and things have to change quickly," DiPietro said. "It's frustrating. Every time we take a step in the right direction, we immediately take a step backward."

Auld lost his shutout bid when Alexei Zhitnik scored 2:06 into the final period.

"This roller coaster thing doesn't work," Shaw said. "We had only a handful of guys who played to expectations and gave to the team."

Bertuzzi, who had gone 10 games without a goal, opened the scoring at 4:29 after Matt Cooke found him with a pass from behind the net. Bertuzzi scored again 1:46 later, with the right winger converting on Vancouver's two-man advantage that was created by DiPietro's delay-of-game penalty.

Carter, who had two goals, stretched the lead to 3-0 after twin brothers Henrik and Daniel Sedin set him up.

New York held a 12-7 shots advantage in the period. And the middle frame was worse.

Bryan Allen gave the Canucks a 4-0 lead at 5:35, sending DiPietro to the bench after making only nine saves on 13 shots.

Vancouver got the puck deep after the ensuing faceoff, and Dubielewicz went behind the net to play it. He showed indecision while facing the glass, and Carter swooped in to knock the puck off his stick and in front to Henrik Sedin, who scored into an empty net.

Bertuzzi scored his 15th goal, a power-play tally, with 2:26 left in the period and Carter and Jarkko Ruutu scored in the third period to give the Canucks their fourth win in five games. They allowed three third-period goals at New Jersey on Friday in a 3-0 loss.

"It's something that our team needed," Bertuzzi said. "We needed to have a breakout like this and get everyone's confidence up."

Notes: Vancouver was 3-for-9 on the power play but was outshot 37-31. ... Before scoring three goals at Detroit last Nov. 13, Bertuzzi hadn't had a hat trick since March 17, 2003. ... RW Arron Asham played his 200th game with the Islanders.

Morrison, Bertuzzi pace 'Nucks past Pens

Sports Ticker
1/16/2006 10:30:22 PM

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- After missing most of the fun in the Vancouver Canucks' recent offensive explosion, Brendan Morrison made his mark against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Morrison scored the go-ahead goal and set up linemate Todd Bertuzzi's eventual game-winner as the Canucks posted a 4-2 victory over the Penguins.

It was the fifth win in the last six games for Vancouver, which cruised to an 8-1 triumph over the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Morrison scored just one point in that game on a late assist, but the 5-11 center was involved in both of the Canucks' pivotal tallies in this one. He snapped a 1-1 deadlock at 4:17 of the second period with his 10th goal of the season.

Bertuzzi doubled the advantage nearly nine minutes later with his 16th goal, a power-play tally off a one-time feed from Morrison.

It was the fourth goal in the last two games for Bertuzzi, who recorded his fifth career hat trick Saturday.

Steve McCarthy tallied in the first period and fellow defenceman Nolan Baumgartner registered a pair of assists for the Canucks, who improved to 26-15-5 this season and moved into a tie with the Calgary Flames for first place in the Northwest Division.

Mark Recchi wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle past Vancouver goaltender Alex Auld to halve Pittsburgh's deficit at 19:33 of the second period.

The Canucks gained some breathing room when Henrik Sedin tallied off a deflection from the slot at 6:41 of the final session to push the lead to 4-2.

The cushion proved to be enough for Auld, who made 23 saves and increased his save percentage to .923 in the month of January.

Pittsburgh rookie sensation Sidney Crosby opened the scoring with his team-leading 22nd goal, a power-play tally on a rebound near the left goalpost at 7:30 of the first period.

But the Penguins struggled with a man advantage thereafter, coming up empty on their next seven power plays.

Nonis refutes Jovanovski injury report

TSN.ca Staff
1/17/2006 4:15:13 PM

After loca reports in Vancouver had suggested that Canucks defenceman Ed Jovanovski might have a more serious injury than originally feared, General Manager Dave Nonis said that was news to him.

Radio station MOJO 730 AM in Vancouver reported Tuesday that Jovanovski recently had an MRI on his groin and that the results might not be good - possibly revealing a sports hernia. The station later updated their story, suggesting that the results of the test were expected to be encouraging.

Nonis refuted the report.

"Ed Jovanovski has not had an MRI on his groin," Nonis told TSN. "He had an MRI for his hip a couple of weeks ago, but nothing since then."

The Canucks told TSN the injury is just a groin pull. In fact, after staying off skates for two days, Jovanovski is expected to skate in Vancouver on Wednesday to see if his condition has improved.

While noting that it was unfortunate to see Jovanovski sidelined for a longer period than expected, Nonis suggested that if it was playoff time, his star defenceman would be in the lineup.

Winning streaks meet at GM Place

The Sports Network
1/19/2006 11:39:11 AM

(Sports Network) - A pair of teams aiming for their third consecutive victories meet tonight, as the Vancouver Canucks welcome the Buffalo Sabres to General Motors Place.

The Sabres won their second in a row Monday evening in Edmonton. Maxim Afinogenov scored the game-winning goal in the final frame and added an assist, as Buffalo earned the 3-1 victory at Rexall Place.

Ryan Miller had a solid game in net making 22 saves for the Sabres, while Tim Connolly and Derek Roy tallied the other goals.

Tonight marks the second test of a six-game road trip for Buffalo, which is an impressive 14-6-1 as the visitor this season.

Buffalo has 61 points and is currently four behind Ottawa for first place in the Northeast Division.

The Canucks, meanwhile, are locked into a three-way tie for first place in the Northwest Division. Vancouver, Calgary and Colorado each have 57 points atop the division.

Vancouver was last in action on Monday when it posted a victory in Pittsburgh. Brendan Morrison had a goal and an assist to help the Canucks beat the Penguins, 4-2, at the Igloo.

Steve McCarthy, Todd Bertuzzi and Henrik Sedin all lit the lamp as well for Vancouver, which has won five of its last six games. Alexander Auld turned away 23 shots in the win.

The Canucks, who are 16-3-3 in B.C. this year, kick off a brief two-game homestand this evening. They will also open the doors for Montreal on Saturday.

Vancouver is 5-2-1 (2 losses, 1 tie) in the last eight meetings with the Sabres. Buffalo is just 0-3-1 in its last four trips to Vancouver.
