Dammit. We played like ass in our own end. Practically gave TO every goal they scored. Rematch Monday.

All in all though, a good day for hockey. Watched 10 hours straight

Home wreckers: Leafs defeat Canucks

Canadian Press
11/23/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs did something on Saturday that no other team has been able to accomplish all season - they beat the Canucks in Vancouver.

Gary Roberts scored two goals and Ed Belfour made 25 saves as the Leafs snapped the Canucks' home-ice unbeaten streak at 10 games with a 5-3 win.

The victory also allowed Toronto to wrap up its six-game road trip on a winning note after going 0-2-2-1.

``The guys were really determined tonight,'' said Belfour, who picked up his sixth win of the season. ``We all talked about how important it was for us to get back on track. Tonight we just kept working and working and things went our way.''

Robert Reichel scored once and added an assist for Toronto, now two games above .500 with a record of 8-6-5-2.

Owen Nolan scored his second goal in 14 games while Mats Sundin had an empty-netter 55 seconds after Todd Bertuzzi had pulled the Canucks to within one goal late in the game.

``It's nice that we got things going,'' Roberts said. ``It's been a tough trip for us. We're all pressing a little bit, we all feel responsible. (The Canucks) are a great team and they made it close but we were able to pull it out.''

Markus Naslund ended his eight-game scoring drought with his eighth goal of the season for Vancouver, which had set a franchise record by going 9-0-1-0 at home to start the season.

Trevor Linden and Bertuzzi also scored for the Canucks (12-5-2-2) while Dan Cloutier made 23 saves after surrendering goals on Toronto's first two shots.

``We knew they would be fired up for this game,'' said Canucks centre Brendan Morrison. ``There was a lot of talk about them not playing well but they were in every game they lost.''

The injury-plagued Leafs got the win despite being without Alexander Mogilny (hip), Wade Belak (abdominal), Nik Antropov (shoulder) and Joe Nieuwendyk (back).

The team also lost right-winter Nathan Perrott, who was kicked out of the game at the end of the first period for hitting Artem Chubarov from behind near the Canucks bench. Chubarov, who missed a game early last week with a shoulder injury, was down on the ice for several minutes and didn't return to the game. He later went to hospital for x-rays.

The two teams will square off again on Monday in Toronto.

For the third time in as many games, the Canucks fell behind 2-0 early as the Leafs scored twice in the first 2:46 of play.

Seconds after Tie Domi and Bryan Allen went toe-to-toe, Roberts tipped in a point shot from Bryan McCabe. Then Reichel made it 2-0 when his wrist shot got through a screen of players and past Cloutier.

``Our starts have been horrible,'' said Morrison. ``Tonight it caught up with us.''

The Canucks managed to pull even before the end of the period, scoring first on a delayed penalty then again on the power play.

On the first goal, Brent Sopel took a slap shot from the point that deflected hard off the end boards and bounced right to Naslund, who one-timed the puck behind Belfour.

Then, with under a minute to go in the frame, Bertuzzi took the puck into the corner then passed it out front to Linden, who went down on one knee to roof it into the Toronto goal.

The game stayed tied until 4:18 into the third period. The Leafs got off a handful of shots on Cloutier before Nolan, left unguarded at the side of the net, jammed in Matt Stajan's rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

Roberts then restored the two-goal lead when he scooped up the puck from a scrum along the boards, skated in a huge arc before pulling the puck to his forehand and gliding it along the ice past Cloutier.

With the goaltender out for the extra attacker, Bertuzzi scored to make it 4-3 before Sundin stripped the puck from Mattias Ohlund and hit the empty goal.

``They're not going to be happy with tonight's results and they're going to be ready for us (on Monday),'' Nolan said. ``They've got a really good hockey team over there, you can see all the talent they have. We expect a tougher game.''

Notes: Former Canuck Harold Druken, called up on Friday by the Maple Leafs, picked up an assist on Nolan's goal ... Canucks agitator Jarkko Ruutu was assessed two diving penalties in the game ... Trevor Linden played in his 1,100th game on Saturday. He needs just 18 more points to become the all-time leading scorer in Canucks history ... The Canucks played in front of a packed house for 11 of their home games so far, putting them on pace to pass their club record of 37 sellouts last season ... Vancouver failed to beat the Leafs last season, going 0-2-1.

Canucks try to avoid home-and-home sweep

Sports Network
11/24/2003

(Sports Network) - The Toronto Maple Leafs try to make it two straight wins this evening when they wrap up a home-and-home series with the Vancouver Canucks at the Air Canada Centre.

In the opener of the set on Saturday, Gary Roberts scored two goals, as the Leafs handed the Canucks their first home loss of the year. Robert Reichel, Owen Nolan and Mats Sundin also scored for the Maple Leafs, who snapped a five-game winless streak (0-2-2-1). All three added an assist in the victory, while Ed Belfour made 25 saves.

The Leafs got the win despite being without Alexander Mogilny (hip), Wade Belak (abdominal), Nik Antropov (shoulder) and Joe Nieuwendyk (back). Antropov is out indefinitely, while the other three could return to the ice tonight.

On the milestone watch Owen Nolan is one point away from 700 for his career.

Toronto, which is 3-2-1-1 on home ice this season, will hit the road for three games after this evening's tilt.

Vancouver, meanwhile, got goals from Markus Naslund, Trevor Linden and Todd Bertuzzi in Saturday's loss and had their brief two-game winning streak stopped.

Dan Cloutier stopped 24-of-28 shots in defeat, as the Canucks remain two points ahead of the Colorado Avalanche for first place in the Northwest Division.

Vancouver, which will be away from home for the next four games, is 3-4-1-2 on the road this season. The Canucks are winless in their last four road games, although they did manage to pick up a pair of points in overtime losses in Philadelphia and Boston.

Toronto is unbeaten in the last four matchups (3-0-1) and is 5-1-2 in the last eight meetings. Vancouver is also just 2-5-2 in its last nine trips to Toronto.

Leafs sweep home-and-home over Canucks

Canadian Press
11/24/2003

TORONTO (CP) - Mats Sundin scored on a vintage slapshot and the Toronto Maple Leafs quieted their critics for the time being with a 2-1 win Monday night over Vancouver, sweeping a home-and-home series from the mighty Canucks.

Gary Roberts also scored for the Leafs (9-6-5-2), who outshot the Canucks 33-25 and put together arguably their best performance in back-to-back games this season, the kind of consistency that has been sorely lacking.

Brendan Morrison had the lone goal for the Canucks (12-6-2-2), who recorded back-to-back losses for only the second time this season.

Backup Johan Hedberg got the start in goal for the Canucks, who continue their four-game, all-Canadian road trip Tuesday in Montreal when regular starter Dan Cloutier will be in goal. Hedberg was solid in stopping 31 shots but would love to have Sundin's 60-footer back.

Sundin broke a 1-1 deadlock 2:08 into the third period, ripping a slapshot from just inside the blue-line that beat Hedberg through the five-hole, a powerful blast that had the Air Canada Crowd crowd of 19,437 out of their seats.

Sundin suddenly found the puck on his stick outside the Canucks' blue-line after Vancouver's Ed Jovanovski and Matt Cooke ran into each other to create the turnover.

The Canucks pressed for the equalizer but couldn't beat veteran Ed Belfour, who made 24 saves in goal for Toronto.

As is often the case in home-and-home series, there were plenty of ill-feelings carried over from Saturday's 5-3 win by the Leafs in Vancouver, some players with some scores still to settle.

Canucks superpest Matt Cooke was a target all night long and drew the Leafs into two penalties, the second during a wild melee in the second period that featured Owen Nolan punching any Canuck in sight.

That was the highlight of a scoreless second that featured little in the way of offensive chances but a fair share of bodychecks and chippy play.

The platinum seats were still half-empty when Roberts opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the game, his hard work behind the net paying off when he grabbed a loose puck in the crease and backhanded a shot past a sprawled Hedberg.

The Leafs then buzzed for much of the first 10 minutes, taking it early to the Canucks just as they had Saturday at GM Place.

But the Canucks found their game in the last five minutes of the opening period and Morrison tied it 1-1 at 16:33, tipping Markus Naslund's wrist shot past Belfour.

Notes: After Montreal, Vancouver plays Thursday at Ottawa and Saturday at Calgary ... The Leafs returned home from a six-game road trip (1-2-2-1) only to leave again for games Thursday at Atlanta, Saturday at Ottawa and Sunday at New York against the Rangers ... The Canucks were without centre Artem Chubarov (concussion), still recovering from a questionable hit from behind by Toronto's Nathan Perrott in Saturday's game ... Canucks winger Magnus Arvedson was back in the lineup after missing five of the previous seven games with a nagging groin injury ... Forwards Alex Mogilny (hip) and Joe Nieuwendyk (back) were out for the Leafs.
