Canucks get OT winner - again

Associated Press
12/16/2003

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Vancouver Canucks wish they weren't so comfortable with overtime games.

Brendan Morrison scored 1:19 into overtime and Dan Cloutier made 29 saves as Vancouver beat the Nashville Predators 2-1 Tuesday night, the fifth game out of the Canucks' last six that has gone to an extra period.

``We've got confidence,'' Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi said. ``We are not able to finish off a game, which is ridiculous. We should be capable of doing it.

``We've got to go out and get that lead and start playing with the lead like we did and start playing with the lead like we did earlier in the season.''

Morrison beat Nashville goaltender Tomas Vokoun with a backhand shot from the slot to give the Canucks the win.

``I was trying to look for it, but everyone was kind of scrambling in front of me,'' Vokoun said. ``I think it went to the far side of the net, but I don't really know because I never saw the puck until after it was in the net.''

It was the second straight overtime victory for the Canucks and the second straight overtime game for the Predators.

``The bottom line is we got two points,'' Morrison said. ``But we have to find ways to win in regulation. It is no secret that we are off a little bit offensively and not scoring any goals. But the positive is that we are not giving up a lot of goals.''

Mattias Ohlund gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead in the second period. He got the puck a few feet off the left board and fired a shot from just inside the blue line, beating Vokoun 3:54 into the period.

Rem Murray tied the game with less than seven minutes left in regulation with a short-handed goal. Murray got a pass from Adam Hall as he skated low in the slot. He then wristed a shot between the legs of Cloutier, who was playing in his first game since injuring his groin during a morning skate before a Dec. 9 game with Pittsburgh.

``I give our team a lot of credit,'' Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. ``We were down by a goal with seven minutes to go in the game and we found a way to get a point. I'm disappointed in the end result because the guys put a lot into it.''

The first period was a defensive struggle with each team only able to muster six shots on goal.

Notes: Nashville's Scott Hartnell sprained his ankle early in the second period when he was knocked down by Vancouver's Brent Sopel and slid into the boards. He did not return. ... Vancouver's Todd Bertuzzi has five assists in four games.

Canucks try to keep streak alive

Sports Network
12/17/2003

(Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks try to extend their unbeaten streak to six games tonight when they visit the Dallas Stars at AmericanAirlines Center.

Vancouver is 3-0-1 during its run and leads the Northwest Division with 41 points -- three ahead of second-place Colorado.

On Tuesday, Brendan Morrison scored on a backhand shot 1:19 into overtime to lift Vancouver to a 2-1 win over Nashville at the Gaylord Entertainment Center. Mattias Ohlund also scored and Dan Cloutier stopped 29 of 30 shots for the Canucks, who have just one loss in their last nine (5-1-3).

Morrison ended Vancouver's fifth straight overtime game with his 12th goal. He skated through the left faceoff circle and fired a shot towards the net. Todd Bertuzzi fed the puck to Morrison, then skated in front of the net -- and a Predators defender -- to help set up the goal and screen goaltender Tomas Vokoun.

Cloutier returned to the lineup after missing four games with a groin injury.

Vancouver, 8-5-2-2 on the road, will close out its current road trip Thursday in Edmonton.

Dallas, meanwhile, is only 1-5-1 in its last seven tries, including a 1-0-1 mark in a home-and-home with Chicago over the weekend. On Sunday, Marty Turco and Michael Leighton combined to make 60 saves, as the Stars and Blackhawks skated to a 1-1 tie at the United Center.

Turco had 29 saves in the game, while Sergei Zubov tallied the game-tying goal for Dallas in the second period. The Stars' lone victory during their recent lull came against Chicago on Friday night.

The Stars enter tonight's action last in the Pacific Division with 28 points -- one behind Phoenix and Anaheim, who are tied for third. Dallas, 4-1-2 in its last seven home games, will open a three-game road trip Friday in Florida.

Dallas went 3-1 against Vancouver last season and has won five of the last seven meetings. The Canucks, however, have won three of their last for in Big D.

w00t!!!

Naslund!

It's funny cause I'm watching it on my AIW card, and listening to it on the radio. The radio is about 1 second ahead of the TV signal so it's weird hearing about the goal before Naslund even shot

Ya, that was weak.

As for the TSN guys, it's only the "Moedono" guy that really irritates me. That and the obsession with "the refs set the tone early in the game, yaddayaddaya" over and over again. Sheesh, give it a rest already, we heard you the third time! :|
