Cloutier and Canucks shut down Flames

Canadian Press
12/26/2003

CALGARY (CP) - Dan Cloutier made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season Friday night and the Vancouver Canucks made two first period goals stand up in a 2-0 win over the Calgary Flames.

Cloutier's biggest stop of the night came 6:50 into the third period and was one that didn't even count as a save.

With Calgary applying immense pressure and buzzing around the Vancouver net, the Flames were awarded a penalty shot when Canucks defenceman Mattias Ohlund was called for closing his hand on the puck while he was lying on the ice inside the goal crease.

Oleg Saprykin was selected to take his first NHL penalty shot but left with little to shoot at from a well positioned Cloutier, wristing a shot wide from 20 feet out.

Mattias Ohlund and Brendan Morrison scored for Vancouver (19-8-6-2), which increases its lead over Calgary in the Northwest Division. The Canucks are 6-0-2 their last eight trips to the Pengrowth Saddledome.

The loss for Calgary (18-10-2-3) is just its second in regulation time in the past 18 games (12-2-2-2).

Vancouver opened the scoring early in the first taking advantage of a high-sticking penalty to Martin Gelinas 23 seconds into the game.

From along the boards in the Calgary end, Brent Sopel slid the puck back to the blue-line where Ohlund's slapshot through a crowd in front went in the top corner deflecting off the glove of Miikka Kiprusoff.

Morrison made it 2-0 Vancouver at 13:00 of the first period off a rush in which defenceman Marek Malik was the unlikely key figure.

As Markus Naslund led the Canucks up the ice, the normally defensive-minded Malik raced up to join the rush drawing a pass from Naslund as he crossed the Flames blue-line. The two Flames defenders both slid over take out Malik and when the puck squirted out, Morrison was there all alone to swoop in and make a deke to his forehand to neatly tuck the puck behind Kiprusoff.

After the lacklustre opening 20 minutes, Calgary responded with a much more spirited second period outshooting Vancouver 15-6. However, they couldn't solve Cloutier.

Cloutier was good at times stopping Saprykin from in-close and whipping out his glove to st@b a rising shot from rookie Matthew Lombardi as he burst over the blue-line.

Good luck was also on Cloutier's side as the Flames' hot-scoring Shean Donovan lost control of the puck on an early breakaway then later on the same shift put a shot off the goal post.

Kiprusoff was also good keeping the Flames within striking distance in the third period. Kiprusoff was perfect over the final 47 minutes finishing with 29 saves.

Vancouver lost defenceman Sami Salo with 6:40 left in the third period when he had to be helped off the ice after a knee-on-knee collision with Calgary defenceman Denis Gauthier. Gauthier was assessed a kneeing major and game misconduct.

NOTES: After 33 games, the Flames are 15 points better than they were at the same point last season (9-16-5-3). . . Calgary LW Dave Lowry was a healthy scratch for the fifth game in a row. . . Of the Flames three injured centres - Blair Betts (shoulder), Steven Reinprecht (leg), and Craig Conroy (knee) - Betts is the closest to returning as he is now back skating with the team. . . Vancouver improves to a perfect 11-0-0-0 when leading after two periods.

Struggling Oilers seek offence in Vancouver

The Sports Network
12/27/2003

(Sports Network) - The Northwest Division-leading Vancouver Canucks will look to extend their unbeaten streak to four games tonight, when they host the Edmonton Oilers at GM Place.

Vancouver improved to 2-0-1 in its last three contests with a 2-0 victory over the red hot Calgary Flames Friday. Dan Cloutier stopped 31 shots to earn his second shutout of the season.

Mattias Ohlund and Brendan Morrison scored for the Canucks, who have just one loss in their last nine games (5-1-3) and are unbeaten in their last eight games in Calgary (6-0-2). Cloutier posted his 12th career shutout.

Vancouver improved to 11-0-0-0 when leading after two periods. The Canucks also improved to 5-1-1 in their last seven road games.

Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo left in the third period with a leg injury. Salo is questionable for this contest.

The Oilers are in the midst of a four-game winless streak and have just two victories in their last 15 contests (2-9-3-1).

Edmonton is currently in last place in the Northwest Division with only 30 points. The Canucks lead the division with 46 points.

Edmonton's latest loss came in Calgary on Tuesday night when Miikka Kiprusoff made 30 saves to lift the Flames to a 2-1 victory at the Saddledome.

Mike York netted the lone goal for the Oilers, while Tommy Salo turned aside 19-of-21 shots in the loss.

Gauthier suspended for two games

Canadian Press
12/27/2003

NEW YORK (CP) - Defenceman Denis Gauthier of the Calgary Flames was suspended for two games by the NHL on Saturday for a kneeing incident.

Gauthier received a major and game misconduct for kneeing Vancouver defenceman Sami Salo in the third period of a game Friday night.

Gauthier was suspended for one game in November, 2002, and therefore is considered a repeat offender by the league. He will forfeit $29,268.30 US in salary that will go to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Gauthier will miss Calgary's game versus Edmonton on Sunday and Monday's contest against Minnesota.

Good, but how long will Salo be out? IMO, suspensions should be determined by the duration it takes the injured player to return. If it's a career ending injury, see ya later for the perp.

I thought Allen didn't have a good game at all... Auld looked good to start, but fell off during the game.

Ya, the whole team seemed kinda mediocre, though May/Slegr played better than usual. Auld seemed very weak towards the later half. Ah well, can't win them all, I guess.

Oilers find victory in Vancouver

Canadian Press
12/28/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Edmonton Oilers are hoping this is a sign of things to come.

Tommy Salo made 31 saves for his first win in seven weeks and six different Oilers picked up goals in a 6-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.

The convincing win not only stopped their four-game winless skid but also a drought that saw the team muster just two goals in their previous three games.

``Hopefully this is the start of something,'' said coach Craig MacTavish. ``We need that type of game to get guys back and get guys back in a positive, confident frame of mind. It was getting to the point of ugliness here in terms of guys being uptight.''

Mike York, Jarret Stoll, Brad Isbister, Radek Dvorak, Ryan Smith and Ales Hemsky scored for the Oilers, who had won just twice in their previous 15 games.

Smith also notched an assist while Eric Brewer, Steve Staios and Cory Cross each picked up two helpers.

``It was nice for us to come from a break and get a win, especially against Vancouver,'' said Salo, whose last win came against Montreal on Nov. 4. ``We need everybody to win hockey games and everybody stepped up today. That's why we won this hockey game.''

Brad May picked up his first goal of the season for Vancouver (19-9-6-2), while Daniel Sedin scored for the first time in 10 games. Goaltender Alex Auld made 20 saves.

The Canucks gave up six goals for the first time this season during their most lopsided loss thus far.

Vancouver's specialty teams continued to struggle, with the power play going scoreless in six chances and giving up their third short-handed goal in three games. The Oilers (12-17-6-0) scored once in two chances.

``It was pretty clear and simple, they came in and outworked us,'' said captain Markus Naslund. ``We know what Edmonton is all about. We know they always come in and give a good effort. A few times lately I think you've seen signs of us getting into bad habits and thinking it's going to take care of itself and it's not. We have to play at a top level to beat teams.''

The Canucks, playing the second of back-to-back games, outshot Edmonton 33-26.

May opened the scoring 2:06 into the game when he tipped in Jiri Slegr's shot from the point.

That goal stood until 7:46 of the second frame when Edmonton tied it on York's short-handed goal. Todd Bertuzzi fanned on the puck behind his own net, allowing York to grab it and score on the wraparound.

A few minutes later, Salo made a great glove save off Daniel Sedin, who was set up in front by brother Henrik. But the twins teamed up again on the ensuing faceoff, with Daniel tapping in Henrik's rebound to make it 2-1.

``We were sloppy after that (goal),'' said Canucks coach Marc Crawford. ``We played a real sound first period, didn't give up many chances. In the second period, we gave up as many as we've given up in an entire game. We certainly don't want to play that type of sloppy brand of hockey.''

Edmonton would close out the period with two straight goals to take to take the lead. Stoll ended a 14-game scoring drought with a long, high shot that went over Auld's shoulder.

Then, with the two teams skating 4-on-4 and less than two minutes to go, an unguarded Isbister grabbed the puck a few feet in front of the net, skated around to his backhand and slid it along the ice and under Auld's pads.

Things got rough in the third period when the Oilers had the game well in hand. Officials called eight penalties in the final minute of action after two skirmishes broke out.

The Oilers, last in the Northwest division, will continue its bid to get back into the playoff race when they host Calgary on Sunday.

``We have to continue to build from here,'' said Isbister. ``We've had a tough time putting the puck in the net lately. Hopefully this will be a stepping stone for us to start playing better and getting some wins.''

Notes: Crawford said after the game that defenceman Sami Salo will miss the next few games after he was injured in Friday's 2-0 win over Calgary. Salo suffered a charley horse after a hit by Dennis Gauthier that resulted in a two-game suspension to the Flames defenceman for kneeing. ... Centre Matt Cooke played in his first game in a month for Vancouver after hurting his shoulder and suffering an infection in his elbow. ... Ethan Moreau returned to Edmonton's lineup after missing one game with a shoulder injury.
