UK FTL.

and you are basing that on what exactly? BTW - the UK has no team going to the World Cup, only England.

Maybe he means Ukraine?

Good News For The USA

Czech midfielder Smicer ruled out of World Cup

AFP
June 1, 2006
PRAGUE (AFP) - Czech midfielder Vladimir Smicer has announced that he will not play for the Czech World Cup squad in Germany.

Smicer, 33, made the announcement to journalists in Prague after a meeting with national squad manager Karel Bruckner and doctors at which they concluded that his long running injury problems prevented him starting in the competition.

Smicer broke the news to fellow players at midday Thursday.

"It was not easy. It was emotional and tears were shed. But it would not have been fair of me if I was to go to the tournament and was not able to help the team," he said.

Czech football federation officials have invited him to spend some time with the team in Germany.

Smicer has been sidelined since February with a tendon injury sustained when playing for French side Bordeaux. His problems worsened last week when he was taken to an Austrian hospital after injuring his right leg during shooting practice with the national squad during World Cup preparations at an Austrian Alpine retreat.

In spite of the fresh injury Bruckner refused to rule out the ex-Liverpool player from his World Cup plans saying that he had until June 11 to take a final decision.

Smicer's possible replacement, Libor Sionka, newly signed for Glasgow Rangers from Austria Vienna, joined the Czech squad at their Austrian retreat last week.

Czech team spokesman, Lukas Tucek, said Sparta player Tomas Sivok had also joined the team, the agency CTK reported. A final decision on Smicer's replacement has not been taken.

More good news for the USA

The 32 qualified nations have been playing a series of friendly matches designed to try out new tactics and help teams to gel, but Italy coach Marcello Lippi said he had feared for the health of his players in their match in Geneva on Wednesday.

"We came for a friendly, but we came across a team that was aiming for a little more than that," he said.

Lippi said he had been forced to change half his team in the second half because of Switzerland's physical tactics.

"We suffered from so many incidents that I was forced to make substitutions that I hadn't planned."

On a positive note, Italy's talismanic Francesco Totti proved he is regaining sharpness.

The Swiss are tough and the Italians are a bunch of pussies. I doubt anyone was hurt, but the coach was protecting his players. Remember, "Primadonna" is an italian word...

I am actually looking forward to watching the play of Switzerland's Phillipe Senderos. I saw a profile on him over the weekend, and that guy is tough.

Senderos has had a rough season when playing against a physical striker like Drogba but maybe the experience he's gained will help him in the World Cup

I've seen the last 30 minutes of the match and it certainly had speed and pressure in it for a friendly game. But in this 30 mins the Italians commited more fouls than the Swiss (they also recieved 2 of the game's 3 yellow cards).

Possibly the Italians were a bit surprised by the Swiss' gameplay but this match was a preparation specifically for the group game against France (which I consider Switzerland's strongest opponent in the group). Anyway, the players of both teams weren't in a great mood after the game and they didn't trade their shirts.

I'm really looking forward to watching Zidane play. I'm hoping that he does a lot for the team.

I already made arrangements to be home on June 13th between 12:00 and 2:00.

Zidane no longer France's darling... :Q

Ok, he's one of the greatest players in the history of the game, he helped France win the World Cup at home, and he is retiring after the World Cup. Why would you not shower the guy with love when he leaves the field of play? It's not like he's one of those guys playing two too many seasons after his prime...

As if I needed a reason to think less of the French...

Can anyone find a TV schedule/channel listing? I want to know which games are being aired on which channels and when.

Not a good omen...

Yeah, I'm sure a match the USA lost in the last minute on a stupid misplay by the 7th sub who wouldn't sniff the field in a real World Cup match AND playing without their best player for most of the match really has the US shaking in their boots.
