Yeah, Spain had 63% ball until they scored and went into defense mode. They deserved to win. Not sure if it's Spain or their opponents but it seems like in the knockout rounds, all of Spain's opponents just went into turtle mode to try to take it to PKs. Kind of weird.

Germany looked like a completely different team compares to the Argentina game... I wonder what it would have been like with Muller on

I dont like Spain, they keep winning 1-0 every game, its annoying... I hope Holland teaches them a lesson

Its gonna be an awesome final though... Both teams are based on ball possession, both with an average of about 60% so far ^^

I'm surprised that this is their first finals ever. I realize they have a lot of foreign imports, but when I think of Spain, it's always the dominance of Real Madrid and Barca. They seem to have a lot of talented players, but I guess it wasn't until this year that they put it all together.

I hate Germany so happy Spain won,you have Holland and Spain which are two teams that have never won the World cup in the final which is great .

A well deserved victory for Spain, they dominated everyone they played, even if they struggle to score or even create many good chances. However, it's harder when everyone plays with a defensive mind against you. Germans looked like a lot of them buy that psychic octopus sh*t...

I had hoped for a ESP-NED clash at Euro 2008 when those 2 teams played the best soccer especially Netherlands who blasted Italy and France 3:0 and 4:1 (in retrospect given the performances of these two teams here, perhaps not such an achievement...) and then lost unexpectedly to Russia in extra time in 1/4 finals. Should be a great game, really looking forward to it.

I can't believe that game. Hard to say whether we were really awesome or Germany was awful, but wow, they really did not muster much of anything. Still, very tense until the end, though my companion resigned herself to the loss pretty early into the second half, I never feel confident until the final whistle blows.

Anyway, good times and I can actually try to get down to work now.

Bring on The Dutch!

Really? I don't follow the Euro leagues too closely, but I thought it was mainly the English and Italian leagues that were widely considered the best until recently when Spain became stronger.

Eh? Real Madrid could be one of the most successful clubs of all time..those jerks.

They've won more Champion's Leagues than any other club in history.

Well if anyone read my previous post on my prior views about the game, here's my after game analysis.

Again just got back from the bar and it was a good game. Spain played exactly the way I had anticipated and how they've played throughout the entire WC. Slow, methodical, and always keeping control of the ball with short passes. They literally jam up the middle of the field with players and play keep away with the other team to tire them out and wait for an opportunity to press an attack. Very valid and good strategy and it paid off again.

Basically Spain stuck Puyol or Alsano on Klose and had him shut down. Germany has a mild threat with Podolski and Trochowski they brought in as a replacement for Muller was no threat at all. In fact, I wouldn't rank him higher than your above average high school player, but I digress. By effectively shutting down the German offense, Spain managed to play keep away the entire time. Until the 80 minute mark I think the Germans only had 3 shots on goal. The Germans tried to adopt the same strategy as Spain but did much longer passes which allowed Spain's faster midfield to snap up the ball.

Spain did get a few more calls their way than the Germans, but I didn't see it as being a clear advantage nor something that would have changed the outcome of the game. The officiating was decent in my opinion.

I was surprised that when Spain finally made the goal that it was not done by David Villa, but by Poyul the sweeper! Crazy and clutch. Basically by the 65 minute mark the Germans looked completely gassed and frustrated. I could tell the Spanish smelled blood as they started to press several attacks. It was shot after shot from the Spaniards. It was a bit of a gambit on their parts because doing continual attacks can gas your team and build up frustration over missed or stopped shots. However, Poyul pulls it out at the 71ish minute mark with a great header from a corner kick.

The Germans tried to regroup and counter attack but it was sloppy at best. I could tell the heart and mind were willing, but their bodies were not. Their coach did a bad job on subs in this game in my opinion to let his players get that gassed. They were shanking passes, bad touches, horrible traps, and finally resorting to long ball attempts at the goal. It was really horrible to watch such a well synchronized team fall to pieces. However, that was Spain's strategy from the start and it worked. The last 10 minutes Spain would just sit around kicking the ball back and forth and only press an attack on a clear breakaway counter when the Germans over extended themselves on an attack.

Speaking of which, Pedro should be slapped for being an idiot on that counter. With a 2 against 1 he should have passed the ball off to Torres. Moron. Good job to the German defender Friedrich I think who stuck with it at least until the end.

All in all a great game to watch. I think it could have gone dramatically different with Muller out there, which is saying a lot that one man can make such a difference in a team sport. Congrats Spain you deserve the win and a chance at the Cup!

^^ yep, good assessment. I'm glad they pulled Pedro out right after that boneheaded move. All of the Spanish fans at the bar were cursing him out. Dolt.

I'm not 100%, but I think I'll be rooting for Spain in the final (despite a small desire for revenge). Mostly because I don't know any Dutch but have a couple Spanish friends. I guess I've never really followed the Dutch team either.

My thoughts:

1. Germans were made to look better than they really are from the last 2 games. The critical issue with both England and Argentina is that they didn't play as a team. This is completely different with Spain. Basically 70% of their team plays for FC Barcelona, with the rest at Real Madrid so they really have the teamwork going for them.

2. Germans are really a 1 trick pony - they have basically succeeded before by scoring first early on, and then scoring more on counters when the opposing team is forced to open up. Once they conceded first they have no idea how to build up an attack without using the counter.

3. Spain has improved a whole lot throughout the tournament. Hopefully their form will peak for the final and they will take it all.

4. German defense is very impressive. Even under such great pressure they were able to hold on and Spain was only able to score from a corner.

fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck....now I don't know who to pull for

Spain played really, really well, for sure...btu Germany was without Muller based on some fucking bullshit. Germany has already shown that once you take out one of their crucial players, they are weak as hell. No attack in the first half.

I would be much happier with this outcome if it really was Germany v. Spain, but I will never believe that is the game that we watched today. (no disrespect to Spain, who did play very, very well; compared to say...Argentina) Then again..I look at how Germany manhandled a "great" Argentina team and how Spain struggled against Paraguay (though arguably great defense for Paraguay), and I come back to the same conclusion that this game was a fucking cheat.

So, should I pull for Holland b/c they are technical and precise (like Germany), or the Spanish b/c they have that super ugly dude and are more..."beautiful" in their style, as people like to say?

:hmm:

Reuters is reporting that Paul the Octopus has been declared a traitor and deported to Spain. Source close to Paul revealed that the deportation order was issued to save Paul's life.

Germany's weakness is that their entire play hinges on their starters. They play absolutely flawlessly when everyone is on the field: Klose, Muller, Schwartensteinerburgersteisensheffer--those 3 guys.

I agree that they are weak, though, b/c a great team needs to be able to compensate for missing one of those components.

However, this sport is kind of fucked up that some asshat in a black jersey can knock out one team's best player for the entirety of the next match simply b/c the asshat is fucking blind. Fuck that. yellow cards need a real review/appeal system.

How the fuck does one's chest = hand?

fuck that.

I had already offered to adopt the poor fellow.

I'd like a pet octopus.
