Is that the actual name of the mag? It will be worth it rather than wait an hour or so for the download. My 1.5 mbps dsl sucks.

i guess this wil be a good way to play most of the 360 games w/o breaking my wallet... hehehe...
Yeah, we're signed up with Blockbuster. We get two free in-store rentals a month. I'm going to be using those on 360 games when I can. I picked up COD2 last week and that was about all they had in stock. Every other game was gone except for Tony Hawk.
you can't use the in store rentals from signing up for blockbuster.com for games anymore
Well, I used it just last Thursday.
Just used one last night. (For a PS2 game, though... None of the local Blockbusters have 360 games in stock yet. )

does the coupon say games? the ones on my account just say good for one VHS or DVD rental. if they accept them that's good, but I guess it can depend on the store.

XBox 360 Drops Price
Seriously. According to Kotaku, Japanese retailers are stuck with unsold XBox 360s. They cannot return them to Microsoft due to contractual obligations. No one wants to buy them. Faced with the prospect of unwanted merchandise, stores have decided to sell the consoles at a deep discount. The game machines, which normally retail for 38,000 yen ($350 US), are now selling for 18,800 yen ($150 US). Also included is an Internet Service Provider contract, whatever that entails.

The XBox 360 launched in Japan on December 10th.

This isn't a price drop. This is a deal with a Broadband service provider in Japan in exchange for like a two-year contract.

A picture's worth a thousand words - unless that picture is misleading! This photo has been passed around quite a bit with the tagline that the Xbox 360 prices were slashed in Japan because of slow sales. Indeed, if you look at the photo, it appears that the sticker price of the console has been cut from 38,800 yen (about $350) to 18,800 yen (about $150). Wow!
But...that's not entirely the full story. We contacted our correspondents in Japan to check out the deal, and they report that, according to a phone conversation with retailer Sofmap, the photo depicts a deal the retailer has been promoting with an internet services provider called @TCOM since launch day. The promotion, moreover, is offered only to the first twenty people per store who sign up - and they have to subscribe to the internet service to get the discount. I'm sure you've seen similar deals wrangled by companies like AOL.

Our correspondents note that there is a similar deal going on with Tepco which gives the customer a 10,000 yen discount on anything sold on the store upon signing up for Tepco's internet service.

Finally, our correspondents report, "We asked them specifically if this deal had anything to do with 360s being sold for cheap because everyone has tons of stock, and they said no, that's not the case at all."

Similar deals are also in place for other consoles like the PSP, so this is simply another example of Japan's hardware bundling practices. So, although the 360 isn't selling as quickly as it did in North America (about 28% of the units shipped have been sold so far, according to a Bloomberg report), the photo doesn't indicate that prices were slashed after launch day as some sort of desperate measure - it means that Japan has bundled offers that are just as annoying as the ones we have in North America. Will these bundles move console units? Hm.

Tokyo-based pals Hiroko Minamoto and John Ricciardi chased down the information contained in this report.

AMEX did a similar deal here in America where cardholders could order a 360 for $150.

they aren't selling hardly any xbox360 in Japan though Microsoft sold 62,135 machines over the weekend, or just 39 percent of the 159,000 consoles shipped
The figures indicate a slower start than the original Xbox, which failed in Japan. The first Xbox sold about 123,000 units in the first three days of its launch in 2002, according to Tokyo-based Enterbrain. Anyway, I guess we will have to see with the titles coming out whether it will suceed.
They should have hip more of the systems here!

Cool. The Full Auto demo is going to be released on Live by Christmas. Link

Now I don't have to spend money on OXM.

Just an update on this story. Kotaku issued a correction:
Yesterday, we ran a story about stores in Japan ?slashing? prices on the Xbox 360. This was not the case. The price cut is in fact a standing offer for a variety of items in certain electronics stores. Sofmap, and several other stores, offer a discount if you sign a contract with an ISP, an offer that is apparently tacked on to many popular electronic goods for sale in a store.

While the Xbox 360 is available at a reduced price, it does not appear this has anything to do with how well the console is selling in Japan.

The photo used in the post was sent in as a tip, and Kotaku?s Japan editor posted it using his own experience at the Sofmap store in Osaka and the wording on the sign as background.

Brian spoke with Sofmap folk a few minutes ago and was told that the campaign did indeed start on launch day and that there are no plans to limit or end the campaign anytime soon. They also confirmed that they still have plenty of 360s in stock.

We regret the error.

Hmmm gonna go find a store with OXM as I want to try the Full Auto demo.

Yah I got it last night. It's the same exact demo we could play at Zero Hour, which is a good thing .

Also the rumor about it playing backups is false. I ripped the contents of the disc from my xbox1 to my PC, burnt it to a DVDR, threw it in my 360, and of course, it didnt load as the rumor had said it did.

I figured it wouldn't load either, but hey it was worth a shot.

where did you find the mag? I have tried every Gamestop/EB and Walmart in the area but nobody has that issue. They all have the King Kong cover of the original OXM not the OXM for the 360.

I had to call around a bit. A borders near me had it in stock. It's the January 06 issue. The one w/king kong on it is the Holiday 05 issue.

Anyone having a problem with unlocking achievements in Perfect Dark Zero? I finished the game on the Agent setting last night but it doesn't show up in my achievements list.

holy crap, I thought my 500,000 was good.

I was only using the black holes when I was in trouble since they don't start sucking in stuff until they are shot. Whenever I got in trouble I would shoot one then run behind it and let it suck up all the stuff chasing me, then kill it or the little circles it explodes into. It worked well and was less frantic then what the guy in the video is doing. I cant even see him sometimes buried in all the mobs on the screen. Gonna try his method tonite however and aim for 1million.

I found this story about the Xbox 360 and having one by x-mas recomendations funny.
San Frascisco Chronicle

Problem No. 7: I want to get a game for my darling grandson. Should I choose video games with brand names I recognize, such as Monopoly and Wheel of Fortune?

Only if you want him to hate you. Seriously, just find the sloppiest-looking guy with the most piercings at the video-game store, tell him how old the kid is and what types of things he likes (Baseball? Snowboarding? Global thermonuclear war and world conquest?) and follow his recommendations. This is the only thing he knows about, but he knows it very well.

The additional 300,000 units will bring the worldwide total to around 1 million shipped, which includes 300,000 for Europe, 100,000 for Japan, and the initial North American shipment of 300,000 to 400,000. Microsoft has repeatedly expressed that their goal is to ship 3 million Xbox 360s worldwide in its first 90 days on the market. McNealy said that he expects the console to sell just over 1.5 million units by the end of December, which puts Microsoft on track with their goal.

So, we can expect them to be widely available after that.

Remember, stores still need to fill massive quantities of preorders, and there may not be all the 300,000 like the source said.

Considering it's taken them this long to produce 1 million units, I don't know how they're going to produce and ship approximately 500,000 more in 2 weeks.

Yeah supposedley they broke a lot of the gameplay in Madden. You'd be better off getting the Xbox 1 version of it.

Heh. My wife bought that game for me thinking I'd like it and I had to tell her to return it. I knew better than to get one of the EA Sports games for the 360 this year. Maybe next year.
