it has an optical out just like the HD cables..

so youll need optical on the PC speakers...
like logitech has on thier 5500s
some onboard sound these days has an optical input on them..

Hmmm....I've got some older logitechs. I don't think there are any inputs on them. :|

Few new games popping up for reserve at EBgames/gamestop;

Since this article's original publication, EBgames has updated its site with more listings, including Burnout 5 for the Xbox 360, Half-Life 2 for the Xbox 360, NHL 2007 for Xbox 360, Project Offset for the Xbox 360, NBA Street Vol. 4 for the Xbox 360, and Need for Speed Carbon for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PSP. Once again, retailer listings should not be taken as final confirmation of a game's existence, nor should the absence of a listing be considered as proof that a game isn't coming to a given platform.

Retail Radar: Spore DS, Half-Life 2 for PS3 and Xbox 360, Wii Pilotwings, and Duck Hunt?

The VGA cable does indeed have optical-out, but it also has standard sound jacks, too. You should be able to easily plug it in to the mini-jack ports on your computer's sound card, or into the red and white jacks (phono?) on your receiver. It comes with a converter, in other words.

I am curious as well

my friend has played it and said it's a huge disappointment.

he also said he beat his brother 5 times in a row by doing nothing other than just continually pressing the A button, not even moving the analog stick.

Well frys had table tennis for $29 so I went for it. I haven't got much play time yet (and no online play yet), but I can tell you from my first impressions it's totally worth at least 20 bucks. We'll see if online play adds that other ten, and more time with it. Not sure if I'd buy it at 40, but 30 was a good deal. At first I thought the game sucked. I was pissed. I did training and got used to playing, and then WHAM I got hooked. I didnt' want to stop playing, so I think that's a good sign. The one problem I have is that the focus move (like slow-mo, max payne type) doesn't seem to do antyhing at all except slow down time. I guess it's just to "look cool". So far, worth 20 bucks, we'll see if it's worth 30 by the end of the week.

Found this over on the xbox.com boards, pretty much confirms what will be included in the upcoming update.

http://forums.xbox.com/4472078/ShowPost.aspx

Okay, so I did some digging around after looking at another post, and I found some interesting things.

First off, the Active Download feature for those that havent seen the article...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919421/en-us

Now, that explains what it is...This is how it will work

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919422/en-us

Also, another interesting thing I found is that finally our annoying posts about booting to dashboard have been answered...Boot to Dashboard option and how it will work with this update!

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919388/en-us

Apparently, some things with DVD Movies will also be updated...check this out.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919424/en-us

Hopefully we'll see the update soon. It was scheduled for yesterday.

Downloading in the background and boot to dashboard, finally it seems. Heh they took down the links, anyhow the cat is out of the bag and they were put up a little early it seems. On the first link it had May 23rd as the release, got pushed back once again but hopefully we have it by next week.

Hitman: Blood Money Demo is up.

Also from an MS employee blog on the recent update info:

Xbox Live's Spring Update: Eaaaasy, Big Fella
So we're all really excited about the next update to the Xbox Live, and Xbox Live Marketplace. But hey, we're not ready to share specifics or details about it As such, posts related to this update were done prematurely, and I apologize - from nearby the bottom of my heart - for any confusion this may have caused.

Stay tuned for more detailed information about this in the coming week.

Teamxbox on the upcoming update;

Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Imminent, Features Leaked

Over the last few weeks, various Microsoft employees around the world confirmed that an update to the Xbox 360 dashboard was in the works but it wasn?t until yesterday that an official confirmation was released.

Early in the morning, the Microsoft Knowledge Base was updated with info about the new update but soon after these support pages were deleted. Later in the day, the Xbox Marketing team confirmed that indeed a Spring Xbox 360 update is about to be released and asked gamers to look for more info in the coming week. Apparently, the update was scheduled for roll out on May 23 but for some reason it has been delayed.

The support pages at the Microsoft KB confirmed that a boot-to-dashboard option will finally be incorporated and they also revealed some other features including ?Active Download? and some tweaks to the Xbox 360?s DVD playback capabilities.

Here are some excerpts:

Active Download

This article describes the Active Download feature that is available in the Xbox Live Marketplace. With the spring auto-update of the Xbox Live service scheduled for May 23, 2006, you will have access to the Active Download feature in the Xbox Live Marketplace.

With an active downloads list, you receive the following benefits:

Each item that you download is downloaded separately in the background. This lets you continue to use the console while you download an item.

You can stream music, play DVDs or CDs, play arcade titles, and play games while you download an item from the marketplace.

If you start to play an online game, the download is automatically paused while you play the game to help prevent game lag because of network congestion. This helps you receive the best online gaming experience that the network can provide.

All downloads are associated with your profile. If a download is paused or if the download is interrupted, the download will resume the next time that you connect to Xbox Live.

You can add items to the active downloads list at any time by selecting more items from the marketplace.

You will receive a notification in the Xbox Guide when an item starts to download and when the download is completed. You will also receive a notification if the download fails.

DVD Playback

This article describes how to play DVD movies on an Xbox 360 console. You do not require any special software downloads or hardware attachments to play DVDs on an Xbox 360 console. You can play DVDs on an Xbox 360 console immediately.

The Xbox 360 console uses a ?bookmark? feature. The bookmark feature enables the console to remember the point where you stopped and ejected the last DVD movie that you played. Therefore, when you re-insert and then restart the DVD, the DVD will continue from that bookmark point. To clear the bookmark for a particular DVD, insert a different DVD.

Note: You cannot turn off the bookmark feature.

New Dashboard Pics

Though the Xbox 360 has only been on the market for just over six months, the console is getting its first major facelift. Microsoft today announced the first of what it hopes will be biannual major updates to the console's functions and user interface.

The Xbox 360 spring platform update does not have an official release date yet, but Microsoft hopes to have it ready for download over Xbox Live about a week from today. The update is the first considerable change to the 360 since its launch in November 2005 and is largely based on consumer feedback.

Many of the changes focus on making things easier to find when navigating the "blades" interface or downloading content on Xbox Live Marketplace. A new Media and Entertainment category has been added to the Marketplace menu, which features options to search for movie trailers and short films, television promos, music videos, and others instead of lumping them all together.

The other Marketplace categories have also been revamped. For example, game demos can be searched by genre, themes and gamer pictures have their own section, and game videos (that is, trailers) have been properly separated from movie trailers.

While 360 users have adored the ability to download content onto their machines, they've hated being pinned to the download screen, unable to perform any other activities during the process. The new download manager will allow up to six downloads to be queued up and prioritized, freeing gamers to continue browsing, playing music, or get some gaming in. Lag in online play shouldn't be a factor with background downloading. Once an online session is initiated, all downloads will pause, opening up bandwidth for the game. Once the player leaves the online game, downloading will resume.

When a download is complete, the content can be immediately accessed or applied. Just downloaded a trailer for BioShock? No need to navigate back through the menus like before--just select "play" when the notification comes up. Themes can also be instantly applied, rather than sifting through one's personal settings.

Other updates to the various media functions of the 360 include fast forward or rewind capabilities (up to 16x speed) in Marketplace videos, improved data retrieval for names of CDs and individual tracks, and the ability to resume playback on a DVD from where it was last stopped.

Sometimes, 360 owners just want to unwind with a game of Geometry Wars Evolved or listen to some tunes, but when powering on the machine, the game that was in the drive boots up. Not anymore. Gamers will have the option of setting the 360's default startup to the dashboard or whatever disc is in the drive.

The system's online functions will also have a few extras, as well. Now when a gamer is idle, it will say so on players' friends lists. There will also be an option to have separate gamer pics for friends and the general public. Presumably, this is gearing up for the compatibility with the Xbox 360 camera peripheral, which is supported by this update even though it won't be released until this fall. Until then, gamers can use available pics.

Though the update sounds like it will take up a large chunk of space, it doesn't require a single byte on the hard drive. It actually doesn't need a hard drive at all. The update is flashed to the 360's internal hardware and won't be stored on the hard drive, making it compatible with either SKU of the Xbox 360. It will initially be available online and may be available on disc further down the road.

Microsoft is already at work on a fall update, which the company says will be even more robust and will include more features.

I'm most excited about the boot-to-dashboard option. I'm completely surprised how much more time I spend in the Xbox dashboard than I do in games, something I never thought would happen with a console. It will be great to be able to leave a game in the tray, but be able to boot directly to the dashboard to play a quick game of Geo Wars without having to back out everytime.

I picked up Table Tennis from Fry's for $29.99 yesterday. Well worth the money.

I don't know how to describe the game other than "tight". It doesn't have a lot of features beyond just the exhibition, tournament, and online modes but what it does it does really really well. The Live Tournament mode is just a stoke of genius IMHO. Really makes for fun gaming.

The only glitch that hurts the game is when playing online. Sometimes the opposing player model isn't lined up with the ball or just gets stuck for a second but the ball is still returned. Makes it very difficult to return.
