Alrighty i call upon the mighty power of you technical support geeks !!

Here's the breakdown.

Yes, i am stupid, and i am typing this message on the computer where the fan is not spinning above the chipset, yes I AM concerned though.

I figure it has been like this for awhile so no big deal, but i did notice it and wish to see if anyone knows a cure.

I have an Abit Kv8 max-3...i believe...i hope i didn't make that up.

Anyway the fan is plugged in, and when i prod at it with my finger (yes another stupid thing to do) when the power is still on, the fan will rotate slightly like it wants to move, like it's getting power but not enough....

So should i just remove the fan and see whether or not a wire is loose , or is there something greater going on here.

Also, i'm not sure if any of you play world of warcraft, but my game seems to have a tendency to crash like gangbusters. I am kinda interested to see if this chipset fan could possibly be causing it to crash, but my computer does go through too many Blue Screens of Death!

This is highly frustrating as i wish to reformat the computer, i MAY not get back to you guys anytime terribly soon, unless my game crashes again, but in all likelihood i will be here with any feedback if you require it!

Your system can overheat if the CPU is not properly cooled. Your chip needs proper cooling to maintian its ability to compute, which may be the reason for the crashing and blue screens of death. I recommend that you immediately shut down and replace the fan. Otherwise your $10-$30 replacement price for a fan turns into the price for a new processor!

Lol that sounds logical, but it isn't my CPU fan that isn't spinning, it's the Fan above the chipset on the motherboard...ill see if i can find a picture to help out guys!....

But still i know what you mean about the overheating lol.

See the thing that says "abit" on it...the blue circular fan, it is strugglin.

I overlooked the part about chipset. I guess I do not know for sure. I would hope that someone that has that chipset will read this post and decide to look at their mb and see if the chipset fan is continuously spinning or not. I am sure that the chipset fan is just as important. Are you able to touch it or is it too hot to handle?

If the fan is not spinning like it should, the fan may require replacement or the fan wires may not be properly connected to the motherboard. First, ensure the fan wires are properly connected to the motherboard.

My recommendation is to download and install Abit's uGuru Utility or (inclusive) the Hardware Monitoring Software. This should serve to monitor motherboard and cpu fan speeds and temperatures. I also recommend purchasing and installing Zalman's Northbridge Cooler. This works very well for me. Just make sure there is space above the chipset for this northbridge cooler to fit in. Since the cpu is so close to the northbridge chipset, the cpu heatsink and fan may require use of the space above the chipset, thereby disallowing use of Zalman's fanless northbridge cooler. If that is the case, consider purchasing some other form of replacement chipset cooler.

Pull the fan off. It'll allow for my air movement over the heatsink for the northbridge.
You probably do not need to replace the fan unless your ventilation is not good in the case.
I ran a high end system for 1.5 years with the fan removed form the norhtbridge.

thats the north bridge fan I have the exact same board.
that crappy sleve fan went out in 3 months.
You can get a tho fan and heatsink that will work dandy for that for not too much got mine at
http://www.1coolpc.com/
they are 9.00 not to bad.
you will also need some thermal adhesive. about 12.00 as I recall he sells that too and is real good about answering questions.
You will have to remove motherboard to work from bottom of board to get those 2 plastic push pins to come out.
supposedly they will break and pull out from top but I was having to pull so hard was afraid I would crack my mb so unspread the pins from bottom was safer..and then they pulled right out.

reassemble mb clean off the top of the chip carefully with some alcohol. get it nice and clean. Also that heatsink has an adhesive back but I found it was not strong enough so scraped it all off and cleaned it with alsohol.
apply the thermal adhesive carefully and attach the heatsink to chip.
I put a pint jar of pennies on top of mine to help it set up over night. screw fan into top plug in and your done.

that tho fan is ball bearing and will last forever but if it ever did wear out next time you would just have to replace the fan not the heatsink.

you are getting blue screen of death due to couple of reason while playing warcraft which by the way require lots of juice. The main reason I think is causing the problem is CPU overheat, make sure are you getting the rite rpm fan for your CPU. The second reason is could be your video card.

If you have a side fan that hits it just pull the fan off and either run it like that if tempa are ok or put a larger passive hs on it.

LOL Well for some it doesn't matter... I have an Abit NF7-S and I pulled out the power cord for the NorthBridge fan. It's been like that for over a year.
