Dscaler uses massive CPU cycles as well as PCI/AGP bus bandwidth, just something to consider if you run your tuner while doing other things. The Asus has a newer CX880 chip which provides 11-bit filtering/encoding/decoding natively. I'd be glad to take a few snapshots and e-mail them to someone who wants to host them or simply compare them.

I would like a shot if you have one.. I'd like to compare and see if the native filtering matches dscalers. PM'd you my email.
As far as the cpu cycles.. its worth it if you are just browsing the web. which is what i do most of the time when using mine.

Yes, it works for me, but it looks worse with Dscaler IMO. The sourceforge forums where some of the Dscaler devs post say they have run into a few obstacles with the CX880 and CX881 that are giving them problems. I think the quality is excellent as it is using the hardware encoder/decoder/deinterlacer....make sure you install the alpha plug-ins when isntalling the 4.0.1's.

Ok, I got my Avermedia TV Studio card yesterday and had enough time to play around with it.
It has few major problems: the software is faulty, after about 1 minute it changes channel by itself to something else. I reinstalled software about 10 times and I still get the same thing. Same thing with radio, the sound just disappears and that it. You have to switch back to TV and then back to radio to get the sound back.
I downloaded drivers from avermedia web site, but i still get the same problem. Please note that it might be because of my windows, I have Win XP + SP1.

Qualty is Ok, but could be better. Card was released quite a while ago, so probably it has something to do with it.

The remote control isn't working at all, so that is a good reason to RMA the card. I'm getting MSI TV Anywhere instead, because it has Mpeg 4 capture features and I think that quality will be better.

I haven't seen anyone so far with Creative Digital VCR. The price is too high and basically it is same thing as Leadtek card.

Hmm, ok thanks. Guess I'll have to wait for a later version. Mine immediately bluescreens.

Yeah I'm also happy with my hauppauge. It has good image quality with the dscaler built into the software.. and much more user friendly.

Leadtek is going to release their new Tv Tuner, check it out here. I finally found a nice Tv Tuner card. It's Hauppauge WinTV-D. I'm not sure which one to pick from these two.

I think everyone should start posting what tv tuner they use and give their two cents about it on the tv quality and the software that comes with it. And hopefully we will have enough opinions that we can make a strong suggestion.

Ah, great. Leadtek's using the new 10-bit chip on this card.

I hadnt used my tuner in a long time but noticed that after I installed my tuner, used it for a while then tried to play anything else like a mp3 it would either produce a loud shrill hum until i turned the mp3 off or wouldnt produce any sound.. very strange. But it never did that before. My hardware is a Epox 8RDA, Audigy, Hauppauge Wintv Go. But my computer works great without the tuner so I'm going to place blame on it.
I'd recommend the leadtek if it was me. I've tried the ATI Tv Wonder and am going to see if I can get it back from my buddy but that card was ALOT of trouble.

BTW the Leadtek card is back in stock in newegg.com. Anyone who wants to buy this thing, it is $60 shipped. I got in on this thing yesterday.

Yes

Another thank you for this thread.

I am considering the Hauppage WinTV-D tv tuner myself. I keep hearing nothing but good things about the company and their products. so.....

It is quite steep in price though (Newegg - $156 shipped, Ebay $129.99 shipped)

I just sold my WinTV-D for $85, and upgraded to the Asus 880TV card (about $80). I'm sure you can find another WinTV-D card for about there.

So what are your thoughts on it?

I still haven't bought a new tv tuner card and I'm still looking to get a new one.

If that WinTV-D did normal 1080i HDTV I would heavily think about getting that one but mainly to hook it up to my HDTV ready tv, however I'm not ready to setup an HTPC yet so it's probably overkill for a pc.

Apex, that's actually "downgrade" cause WinTV-D is a higher class TV Tuner. I just bought one. I got it for $100 from a member of this forum. It's pretty good. The package killed me, there were so many wires, Avermedia's Studio doesn't have even half of those wires. The downside is that manual is pretty crappy. I still have no clue what are those wires for

I don't understand how can the Hauppage WinTV-D tv tuner get a digital signal from a sattelite without a reciever !! you still need the signal to go through it, so the card in the reciever would verify that you have the right to recieve that signal !
I guess it works the same for digital cable !
I have both Dish network with analog box and a Time Warner with a digital box, and a 50 inch Sony LCD projection TV that has DVI input .. I am really tempted to hook it up tp my PC to see how it works !! but I haven't gotten the chance to play with that yet ! ahhhh maybe this week end ... I need to figure out what's that DVI connector on the back of that TV is for !

I don't know what the problem with the tv wonder and xp is. I'm running that set-up with MMC 7.6 and it works fine. I think I had some issues with MMC 7.1, but everything's been great since I updated that. Wish I had a friggin' remote tho...
