What the difference between the 865PE and the 875?? Also whats the prescot. Lol sorry for the newbish questions I have been out way to long.

865 is a little slower unless the mobo manufacturer uses tricks to make it work like an 875. At least one 865 variant doesn't support running pairs of DDR RAM sticks in dual channel mode so you lose up to 5% speed.

Prescott (E) is the inferior succesor to the Northwood (C) P4 chips. It runs hotter and in some cases slower. If a motherboard is socket 478 and runs Prescott it should also run the older, better, Northwood chips.

Be careful a lot of motherboards are socket 775 instead of 478 now. At newegg.com you can use their search to see only 478 ones.

I have the p4p800-deluxe (No-E?). I've been most satisfied with it in the 2 years I've had it. Although the onboard audio has caused some problems every once in a while with some crackles and such. But that hasn't been a big deal. It runs very stable and I think I've only had the BSOD once or twice in those 2 years. Although I heard some REALLY good things back in teh day about Abit boards. I've also had some HD issues, but I highly doubt they were mobo related.

There was a good article on 865pe Vs. 875 on motherboards.org back in the day, and that's what convinced me to go with the 865, as they explained how on the asus board it ran faster than the 875 and had more options. I think it was actually just their review for the P4P800 Deluxe, but I can't find that on their site anymore...

I've been pleased and would recommend this board.

P4P800 by Asus is the best board for 865 OR 875.

The P4P800-E revision (SE) can also natively take Dothan Pentium-M's with an adapter, which is the best CPU for that board.

Thanks guys for the info, I really appreciate it. That last post few over my head. I have a p4 out of a dell opteplex, I think it might be a prescott cuz it runs pretty warm, if not hot. So should I go with the p4p800??

What speed processor ? You might be better off dumping it and getting a new proc. What do you use the system for ? Today, Intel offers nothing worth getting for the desktop.
