Trying hard not to make this an ad so forgive me if it ends up being one

I used to run a dialup BBS back in the day and decided to try it again over telnet running Syncrhonet over Linux. If yer interested in some old-skewl / new-skewl ANSI Gaming Action, come check it out at exilebbs.dyndns.org. We have about 15 games in 3 genres and InterBBS play is coming soon.

Straight ASCII? Eh, not really I never cared much for ASCII without colors
There is some graphics on the BBS though. I used my old menu and intro screen from my origonal BBS. They look ok, but they aren't ANSI masterpeices, I'll admit.

ANSI is a standard that basically translates to ASCII + color. More specifically it generally also includes High-ASCII (IBM Extended) characters too. Most DOS Based BBSes tended to use this because, hey, for textmode it wasn't half bad.

Windows Telnet can handle ANSI fairly well. In Linux, I use termix (though you can use Linux telnet if you can configure it the right way).

Use PuTTY or even zMUD. Well, zMUD for non-turnbased would suck because of it's input buffer.

I also found zMUD doesn't always handle the high characters correctly. Least that is what my friends have experienced with it. I like telnet because you can fullscreen into real textmode so it really feels like a BBS. But to each his own
