I have a friend who has a P3 3.0 Ghz, and DDR memory, along with an AGP video card. You know old time stuff

Against all my advice he wants to get a motherboard to accomodate all this old stuff.

What were the good Motherboards for S478? I was an Athlon XP man back then, and did not use P4's.

Regular ATX or MATX would be fine, just needs to use his old stuff. Chipsets, and Brands and model numbers would be great

Also where do you find this stuff didn't see much in the FS/FT forums here.

Thanks in advance

ABIT IS-7 was the best one I had. He'll probably have to get one off of E-Bay. The SOYO black board was supposed to be good also.

Yeah, Abit IS7 or IC7 were great. I had an IC7 in my main rig for a long time, never had a problem. It's still going strong in my parents' computer, it'll be 6 years old this winter.

Get a used board with an Intel chipset.

Almost any board with the Intel 875 chipset is rock solid. I had Asus, Gigabyte and Intel 875 boards. They never gave me any problems; all were rock stable.. If he plans to OC, then Intel is out of the list.

Wait a minute you mention P3 to start then P4 latter, which is it? . The Pentium 3 never sat on a Socket 478 platform. The Pentium 3 was either a Slot 1 chip or a Socket 370 chip. So you either have the wrong CPU or the wrong motherboard.

I'm assuming he doesn't have a fuctional board for those components. Otherwise an upgrade in the mothebroard isn't going to help perfromance.

Abit IC-7 Max.

Asus P4C800-E. Tom's Hardware took it up to 8 GHz using Liquid Nitrogen.

for the Motherboard Tsunami, the socket 478 motherboard review in 2003
that was probably the best comprehensive review i've seen -
MSI 865 chipset board won the 865 chipset category.
Gigabyte 8KNXP (spelling ?), the one with 6 memory slots, won the 875
chipset category.

They made an 875 board with six memory slots? Wow.

The Soyo 865, and moreso, the Black Edition Dragon II 875P boards were monsterous and very strong boards. Also the Abit IC-7, MSI 865, and Asus P4C800 models.

I assume it was a typo? P3 should be P4?

I am still using an Abit IC7-G, I think it's at least 5 years old now. Working great, no problems...except the chipset fan died pretty quick but no need for it.

Look for an Asus P4P800. Either the SE or Deluxe editions. Its by far the fastest (for its time) and most reliable board I've ever had.
