My Win2k install got totally FUBAR so I tried reinstalling it and it didn't work. I had 30GB worth of stuff on my HD and had nowhere to back it up to so I told it to install a clean copy and leave the filesystem how it is. Well for some fvcking reason it decided to completely wipe out my partition!!!! I LOST EVERYTHING!!!!! :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:| Is there anyway I can get any of it back? I am desperate!

Been there done that.

I was using fdisk and since MS-DOS, Windows (and possibly Linux) likes to switch around drive letter when drives are added, removed/partitions added removed, I typed in what usually would be the second partition of my HDD, but since I erased that already, format D: wiped out my entired data drive.

linux doesnt use drive letters. you were using it and didnt know that???

also, you might want to try partitioning your hard drive and backing up your data!!!

why in the hell didnt you back up your files? jesus! its 30 gigs we're talking about. Once I happen to obtain large amounts of data, i take super extreme caution when I do something like "installing a operating system"

my only words of advise here is:

a lesson well learned.

next time, install a 5gb partition for the windows installation and the rest for all your other files.

Yea it's probably a good idea to back everything up. Whats the best way of doing this? Obviously backing up on 2034 floppies isn't the answer.

Was almost there with you. Had a 4 month old stick of DDR go bad(what's up with that). Windows protection errors, etc. Wasn't too far from a reformat myself, when I figured it out.

Umm... how? The second biggest hard drive in my house is an 8.4GB which is already full of crap anyway. There is no way I could have backed anything up especially since I couldn't get into windows and I can't boot off a floppy since it's an NTFS.

well if you dont get a cd burner, then dont be surprised when all your stuff goes down the crapper. you could use fat32. you also could have reinstalled w/o formatting, or in a worst case scenario, install into another directory (i.e. not winnt)

30GB onto cdrs??? I don't even think I have that many. Also i had quite a few files over 700MB that would not fit on a cd. I told win2k not to format. I specifically selected "leave current filesystem intact". Did it? NO! :|

burners are very cheap nowadays. You don't need to buy the newest ones if you're on a budget. Buy a burner.

It won't help, this time, but the cheapest, fastest backup you can use is a second hard drive and Norton Ghost. I back up my 20 gigger while I'm taking a shower.

I always do a full backup before in stalling a new program. That way, if it fails or screws up the drive, I can just Ghost it back and try again.

go buy them then. you can't just complain about losing your data and then give all these reasons why you refuse to back up, that makes no sense.

Speaking of which..........I'm planning on going 2k tonight. Just as a test run, I ran thru some of the install prompts. I was planning on running the upgrade to 2k from 98se. You mean instead of running an install over the OS, it went and formatted everything?

<--starts backing up stuff onto other HD

no, not 30GB onto CDrs in a 1:1 ratio.....I used Norton Go Back to backup my drive and it was like 1 80 minute (700MB) CD to 1300MB hard drive space. Worked pretty good.
