only in safe mode

I upgraded win 7 to win 8 pro to win 8.1 pro and everything seemed to run smoothly. I run a biostar hi-fi 77 motherboard and I not leaving well enough alone went on Biostar's web page to see if maybe the motherboard drivers had been tweaked to win 8.1. Not long after this I suddenly got a blue screen saying my win 8 had not started properly and it would fix itself - well it couldn't and with a pile of pulled out hair on my keyboard I can not boot into win 8.1 normally without getting the blue screen. from the help features on blue screens I can boot into safe mode and as now can access web pages and post to this web forum. I have tried everything except removing the battery overnight. No normal boot into win 8.1. machine runs like a charm in safe mode but there is no sound and no network access. I had run for a couple of weeks with 8.1 Pro with no problems (and wonder of wonders it runs my flight simulator like a champ, win 8 would never install the program).

I did find that reinstalling the on board video drivers would correct the problem but at any time it would suddenly go to blue screen and cease to function again in normal mode. Intel just put out new video drivers for win 8.1 systems and that seems to have cured the video problems but I'm still "talking to you" in safe mode. Any ideas????? I'll check back in the morning. I hope I didn't pick up malware that causes start to corrupt.

What ever drivers you updated, remove them and revert back to the last set. I can't remember if system restore will properly do this or not, but i'd start there for the easy fix.

I have tried everything, I reverted to the drivers that were installed when 8.1 was installed and 8.1 has been working until now. I strongly suspect I have some kind of virus. Reinstalling video drivers fixes it for maybe an hour or so and then it will for no apparent reason - blue screen with the message windows did not start properly - checking for information - and then a diagnosing your PC screen- and then windows was unable to repair your system - and offer advanced options which include starting in safe mode - which I am using now, after an hour or so of normal operation. Does this sound malware like?

1. check your ram to make sure that is not the problem.

2. see if you can actually write down the error you are getting.

let us know what you discover.

There is no designated error - there is a "stock" screen that comes up simply announcing failure to start and then cycling through a self repair operation which it then announces it couldn't do and offers you a number of solution steps. I would love to just do a win 8 system refresh but it asks for the win8 disc and then because it is now win8.1, says my disc isn't acceptable. Thought about reinstalling win 8 but it won't do that either. Win 8.1, downloaded from the windows store simply congratulates me for running win 8.1 and won't allow it being reinstalled.

I'm thinking it may have to do with the system going to sleep and committing suicide while asleep announcing it couldn't start properly on wakeup.

I have another motherboard I can install and load win 8 to if necessary and beginning the whole thing over again. If there is malware simply starting the same windows again on a new system will just import the malware. Everything is backed up - maybe including the malware?

Can you boot to safe mode with command prompt? If so, try running sfc /scannow

Since you are online, try running a full scan with ESET online scanner. Select both initial options and ,in advanced, select the first three.

You might also download TDSSKiller.exe from Kaspersky and run that.

This has to be malware. I redid, undid, studied all aspects of the motherboard bios and had it running beautifully last evening. I could reboot, turn the system off, walk away from it for 15 minutes come back and it would boot up to the sign in screen in about 15 seconds. Working like a champion. Got up this morning - it booted up in probably 15 seconds or less, then worked like a charm all morning long. After checking all the serious stuff I called up my only game - flight simulator. it worked beautifully - - I flew around Japan with an airbus 340/600 and decided I would take a 767 from Manila to Tokyo. I left the screen up for flight planning, went down stairs to make coffee - came back and saw the infamous screen - "windows could not start properly"

Question 1 - start??? the program was open and windows was operating when I left. how did it get to a "reboot" level and fail to start???

I'm going to try some of the scans mentioned. I have ESET on my machine now I've scanned twice with no crap found. I know that really good malware and viruses can fool your anti-software and as I recall, right after this stuff started happening my ESET wouldn't work-error couldn't find its kernel????. re-downloaded ESET and grabbed the upgrade for free to ESET 7. Scanned with it and found nothing.

Wait... there is a possible fly in the ointment. A day or so after this began to happen I called Microsoft and their online repair folks. I gave them control and for about two hours they and I wrestled with my machine. Part of the protocol was to disable all drivers on the machine and see if that made a difference it didn't. Finally when we thought we had the beast conquered They asked me to reboot (we were on the phone by the way) and we got the blue screen. WE went back through the motherboard drivers again and when we reinstalled the video drivers for the on-board video - the machine booted up as it should. I went back to the original video drivers on the DVD that came with the motherboard, the Microsoft folks had searched online and found a basic Microsoft video driver I used, and we concluded that the latest drivers from Biostar (Microsoft) were incompatible with 8.1 (everything worked like a charm on WIN8) But now, Microsoft has issued new video drivers for 8.1 and things seemed to work ----until that weird blue screen came up in the middle of the machine operating as designed. I'm stumped. I'll try the scans mentioned and let you know the outcome.

Hey, new stuff to think about. After the last post I simply reinstalled the video drivers from the board DVD and it booted right up as it should. I'm using the regular system now, my last message was from safe mode. But there is a new wrinkle I forgot to mention. Every time I reboot or turn off the system, I lose my internet connection and windows has to repair the connection before I can get on the internet.
