Open GL In U.T.???

Hi everyone

I remember reading somewhere that UT actually runs great in Open GL: however, when I set up the game to utilize open gl, it boots dark as hell, and trying to adjust the brightness in the game properties doesn't seem to help.
Ideas???

You need to download the latest OGL patches in order to make it run well, with the compressed textures and all. Out of the box the OGL support is horrible. Unfortunetly I have been out of the UT loop for a little while so I forget where to get those patches, I'm sure someone here remembers though.

I use the 4.36 patch to run open gl. D3D doesn't work well with my video card but I have no problems at all with open gl. I don't think there are any later versions around than this.

You have to install the extra textures from UT CD #2 for it to work. If you dont have it, don't bother. Once that is done, go HERE and download the OpenGL renderer and modify your UT.ini file as described on the site.

You don't need the extra textures, they're an extra, that's why they're on cd2 and not cd1. There's even a line in the unrealtournament.ini (once you've updated it) that controls them, you can turn them on or off, only diff ingame is some of the textures are replaced with hi-res ones.

on my radeon, it runs WAY better in OGL than d3d......

Plus, there are a few interface thingies that look cool, but only happen in OGL....... like the console window text area is a gradient, and some other stuff..

True, you don't NEED to install the 2nd CD textures. If you don't, there really is no point in running OpenGL. The reason you go through this whole exercise is to use the high res S3TC textures from the 2nd CD. There are quite a few detail textures that are used from CD # 2 (about 600 meg worth). You can see the difference in most of the maps.

The last time I tried it on a Radeon, it worked very well, but that was awhile ago.

that site description was a little confusing, it said to edit the Open gl section: it should have said to ADD the Open gl lines I was looking all over for the Open gl render section, when it wasn't there.
However, we got her working- seems a liitle smoother than D3D, and the colors seem to be a little more vivid: maybe just my imagination.
I initially forgot to add the extra lines, and the refresh rate was killing my ass

OpenGl section is there by default. Its right above the D3D section. By default it looks like:

[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
Translucency=True
VolumetricLighting=False
ShinySurfaces=True
Coronas=True
HighDetailActors=True
DetailTextures=True

If it works right, you will see a dramatic difference. Here are a couple of articles. They are kind of old, but take a look at the shots to see how it should look. UTII...UT

Yeah, OpenGL runs faster for me and it a whole lot better than D3D.

Unfortunately i seem to lag more often when playing online in OGL mode so i have to run in D3D.

Turning on detail textures in the D3D section of the unrealtournament.ini improves the quality of the textures slightly but nowhere near the quallity of the hi-res compressed textures.

If you want the best visual quality, run in OGl mode with full anisotropic filtering and highest AA setting your computer can handle.
I personally run with 8X (64-tap) aniso and Quincunx AA, combined with the compressed textures it looks bloody amazing!!

this is UTGOTY, so I hope there is no difference

There was no Open gl renderer that I saw: these are how they were listed:
softdrv
glidedrv
metal
D3D
SGL

I added the open gl lines betwen the D3d and the last one: seemed to cure the refresh rate problem. I am at the end ( again) fighting XAN, so i may be just a little busy not gettting a chance to scope out the eye candy

yep, extra cd loaded, and version 436.

I loaded Metal dream , in Domination, and yeah, looked WAY different. Only gripe is when I exit back to the desktop , the Gamma seems way off: I had to log off/on, then everything was cool.

Use your video card's gamma control panel to raise the brightness.

the Gamma seems way off: I had to log off/on,

Set your gamma levels back to normal when you exit the game.

hrm...I bought UT when it came out all those years ago and where could i get the S3TC textures? it sux that I'd have to spend MORE money on another copy of the game when I paid $50 for it brand new! Even if it's 420...they should give away the textures to people that spent $50 to begin with

OLDFART:
no doubt, they look a LOT different !!

BFG10K:
installing the updated Opengl renderers solved the brightness problem: when I boot into UT, it is now adjustable, and stays where I set it last time. However, no matter where I leave it, the desktop is always washed out. And here's a weird little foible ( always wanted to use that word), just now I checked the gamma setting on my card ( at 1.0 ) , then booted into UT for about a minute, then exited again. Apparently I have to play for a while for this problem to manifest.

I got my 2 CD UT for free. I bought a Voodoo 3 3000 for $130 when it first came out. It had a $30 rebate and a coupon for UT which was going for ~ $40. $130 - $30 - $40 = $60. I used the card for 1 1/2 years and sold it for $60. Free UT and a free video card. Not bad.

Thanks 3DFX and R.I.P.

Keep in mind when you install the second CD if the server does not have it installed (most don't) you can't play certain maps.

I get tired of homos crying, WWAAAHHHH I CAN'T MOVE, WWAAAAAHH!!!! It's because they installed disc 2. Installing disc 2 for a slight bump in texture quality is stupid when you can't play some of the maps on most servers, don't do it!

I just got a GF3, and in D3D i get like 40fps, but fully tweaked in OGL it's ok, about 180fps staring at a wall. Why can't I run it in D3D (my D3D owns in other games, just UT sux)? I've seen others with the same prob, any solution ever found??? (and it's not my settings I am very familiar with tweaking UT, I think it's the driver and I am NOT familiar with Nvidia drivers. I really wish I woulda bought the 8500 now since I mostly play UT!)

How can you tell if they're "Homo's" as you call them if you're online? Can you not just "not" use the textures and play D3D online, or just play on severs that have the extra textures, or just not play those maps at all? I mean really, NOT Installing disc 2 for a slight increase in hassle is silly when you can play most of the maps on most servers, do it!

Actually GF cards run UT much better than 8500's. Look no further than here (anandtech) to see that. Its just that UT D3D sucks, period.

Nope, no newer ones, and there never will be. Just like regular Unreal, this ("final") UT patch 4.36 disables CD checking so you can play without the CD, and is the last update to Unreal Tournament.
